    Mobile heritage practices. Implications for scholarly research, user experience design, and evaluation methods using mobile apps.

    Mobile heritage apps have become one of the most popular means for audience engagement and curation of museum collections and heritage contexts. This raises practical and ethical questions for both researchers and practitioners, such as: what kind of audience engagement can be built using mobile apps? what are the current approaches? how can audience engagement with these experience be evaluated? how can those experiences be made more resilient, and in turn sustainable? In this thesis I explore experience design scholarships together with personal professional insights to analyse digital heritage practices with a view to accelerating thinking about and critique of mobile apps in particular. As a result, the chapters that follow here look at the evolution of digital heritage practices, examining the cultural, societal, and technological contexts in which mobile heritage apps are developed by the creative media industry, the academic institutions, and how these forces are shaping the user experience design methods. Drawing from studies in digital (critical) heritage, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and design thinking, this thesis provides a critical analysis of the development and use of mobile practices for the heritage. Furthermore, through an empirical and embedded approach to research, the thesis also presents auto-ethnographic case studies in order to show evidence that mobile experiences conceptualised by more organic design approaches, can result in more resilient and sustainable heritage practices. By doing so, this thesis encourages a renewed understanding of the pivotal role of these practices in the broader sociocultural, political and environmental changes.AHRC REAC

    Safe passage for attachment systems:Can attachment security at international schools be measured, and is it at risk?

    Relocations challenge attachment networks. Regardless of whether a person moves or is moved away from, relocation produces separation and loss. When such losses are repeatedly experienced without being adequately processed, a defensive shutting down of the attachment system could result, particularly when such experiences occur during or across the developmental years. At schools with substantial turnover, this possibility could be shaping youth in ways that compromise attachment security and young people’s willingness or ability to develop and maintain deep long-term relationships. Given the well-documented associations between attachment security, social support, and long-term physical and mental health, the hypothesis that mobility could erode attachment and relational health warrants exploration. International schools are logical settings to test such a hypothesis, given their frequently high turnover without confounding factors (e.g. war trauma or refugee experiences). In addition, repeated experiences of separation and loss in international school settings would seem likely to create mental associations for the young people involved regarding how they and others tend to respond to such situations in such settings, raising the possibility that people at such schools, or even the school itself, could collectively be represented as an attachment figure. Questions like these have received scant attention in the literature. They warrant consideration because of their potential to shape young people’s most general convictions regarding attachment, which could, in turn, have implications for young people’s ability to experience meaning in their lives

    A review of solar hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) collectors and systems

    In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in hybrid PV-T collectors and the wider systems within which they can be implemented, and assess the worldwide energy and carbon mitigation potential of these systems. We cover both experimental and computational studies, identify opportunities for performance enhancement, pathways for collector innovation, and implications of their wider deployment at the solar-generation system level. First, we classify and review the main types of PV-T collectors, including air-based, liquid-based, dual air–water, heat-pipe, building integrated and concentrated PV-T collectors. This is followed by a presentation of performance enhancement opportunities and pathways for collector innovation. Here, we address state-of-the-art design modifications, next-generation PV cell technologies, selective coatings, spectral splitting and nanofluids. Beyond this, we address wider PV-T systems and their applications, comprising a thorough review of solar combined heat and power (S–CHP), solar cooling, solar combined cooling, heat and power (S–CCHP), solar desalination, solar drying and solar for hydrogen production systems. This includes a specific review of potential performance and cost improvements and opportunities at the solar-generation system level in thermal energy storage, control and demand-side management. Subsequently, a set of the most promising PV-T systems is assessed to analyse their carbon mitigation potential and how this technology might fit within pathways for global decarbonization. It is estimated that the REmap baseline emission curve can be reduced by more than 16% in 2030 if the uptake of solar PV-T technologies can be promoted. Finally, the review turns to a critical examination of key challenges for the adoption of PV-T technology and recommendations

    If every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets, what is wrong with the design of the systems that govern Britain? And how have they resulted in failures in housing, privatisation, outsourcing, education and healthcare? In How Did Britain Come to This? Gwyn Bevan examines a century of varieties of systemic failures in the British state. The book begins and ends by showing how systems of governance explain scandals in NHS hospitals, and the failures and successes of the UK and Germany in responding to Covid-19 before and after vaccines became available. The book compares geographical fault lines and inequalities in Britain with those that have developed in other European countries and argues that the causes of Britain’s entrenched inequalities are consequences of shifts in systems of governance over the past century. Clement Attlee’s postwar government aimed to remedy the failings of the prewar minimal state, while Margaret Thatcher’s governments in the 1980s in turn sought to remedy the failings of Attlee’s planned state by developing the marketised state, which morphed into the financialised state we see today. This analysis highlights the urgent need for a new political settlement of an enabling state that tackles current systemic weaknesses from market failures and over-centralisation. This book offers an accessible, analytic account of government failures of the past century, and is essential reading for anyone who wants to make an informed contribution to what an innovative, capable state might look like in a post-pandemic world

    Development of an in vitro blood flow model to evaluate antimicrobial coatings for blood-contacting devices

    Pre-clinical evaluation of novel antimicrobial coatings for blood-contacting devices commonly relies on the performance of animal studies since alternative in vitro models do not adequately represent the interactions between blood, bacteria, and material surfaces as they occur in vivo. To reduce the need of these cost-intensive and controversial animal tests, this project was dedicated to the development of a new model setup that overcomes this limitation and allows in vitro evaluation under in vivo-like conditions. This newly developed model was intended to be directly applied to evaluate recently in-house developed antimicrobial coatings, so-called anchor polymers. Therefore, the project was divided into two parts. The first part of the project focused on the evaluation of the anchor polymer coatings concerning their applicability in blood-contacting devices. For this purpose, the PEGylated styrene-maleic acid copolymers were intensively studied using established laboratory tests. These examinations showed very promising results regarding adsorption and stability on relevant polymer substrates, antimicrobial efficacy, and biological safety of the coatings, thus revealing their great potential for future applications in medical devices. Moreover, this basic characterization was meant to allow a subsequent comparison of the new in vitro model with state-of-the-art in vitro tests. The second part of the thesis focused on the development of the realistic in vitro model. Here, a single-pass flow system realized the implementation of adjustable flow conditions. Furthermore, incubation with freshly drawn human blood provided a physiological nutrient environment and included the influence of an immune response. Staphylococcus aureus were chosen as representative microorganisms, as they are responsible for a majority of device-related blood stream infections. The resulting blood flow model was validated with one anti-adhesive and one contact-killing anchor polymer coating, confirming the model’s ability to differentiate the investigated surfaces. Inflammatory and coagulant blood activation correlated slightly with bacterial coverage, which in turn was strongly dependent on the investigated material surface. Incubation with varying flow conditions demonstrated the model’s capability to reflect the well-documented dependence of bacterial colonization and occurring flow conditions. In contrast to the state-of-the-art in vitro tests, the simultaneous incubation of test surface, bacteria and whole blood allowed the analysis of mutual interactions of the three parameters. Thus, the model represents an excellent method for pre-clinical evaluation of novel antimicrobial coatings for blood-contacting devices
