    A multisensing setup for the intelligent tire monitoring

    The present paper offers the chance to experimentally measure, for the first time, the internal tire strain by optical fiber sensors during the tire rolling in real operating conditions. The phenomena that take place during the tire rolling are in fact far from being completely understood. Despite several models available in the technical literature, there is not a correspondently large set of experimental observations. The paper includes the detailed description of the new multi-sensing technology for an ongoing vehicle measurement, which the research group has developed in the context of the project OPTYRE. The experimental apparatus is mainly based on the use of optical fibers with embedded Fiber Bragg Gratings sensors for the acquisition of the circumferential tire strain. Other sensors are also installed on the tire, such as a phonic wheel, a uniaxial accelerometer, and a dynamic temperature sensor. The acquired information is used as input variables in dedicated algorithms that allow the identification of key parameters, such as the dynamic contact patch, instantaneous dissipation and instantaneous grip. The OPTYRE project brings a contribution into the field of experimental grip monitoring of wheeled vehicles, with implications both on passive and active safety characteristics of cars and motorbikes

    Development and application of optical fibre strain and pressure sensors for in-flight measurements

    Fibre optic based sensors are becoming increasingly viable as replacements for traditional flight test sensors. Here we present laboratory, wind tunnel and flight test results of fibre Bragg gratings (FBG) used to measure surface strain and an extrinsic fibre Fabry–Perot interferometric (EFFPI) sensor used to measure unsteady pressure. The calibrated full scale resolution and bandwidth of the FBG and EFFPI sensors were shown to be 0.29% at 2.5 kHz up to 600 ΌΔ and 0.15% at up to 10 kHz respectively up to 400 Pa. The wind tunnel tests, completed on a 30% scale model, allowed the EFFPI sensor to be developed before incorporation with the FBG system into a Bulldog aerobatic light aircraft. The aircraft was modified and certified based on Certification Standards 23 (CS-23) and flight tested with steady and dynamic manoeuvres. Aerobatic dynamic manoeuvres were performed in flight including a spin over a g-range −1g to +4g and demonstrated both the FBG and the EFFPI instruments to have sufficient resolution to analyse the wing strain and fuselage unsteady pressure characteristics. The steady manoeuvres from the EFFPI sensor matched the wind tunnel data to within experimental error while comparisons of the flight test and wind tunnel EFFPI results with a Kulite pressure sensor showed significant discrepancies between the two sets of data, greater than experimental error.     RTM production monitoring of the A380 hinge arm droop nose mechanism: a multi-sensor approach

    his research presents a case study of production monitoring on an aerospace composite component: the hinge arm of the droop nose mechanism on the Airbus A380 wing leading edge. A sensor network composed of Fibre Bragg Gratings, capacitive sensors for cure monitoring and thermocouples was embedded in its fibre reinforced lay-up and measurements were acquired throughout its Resin Transfer Moulding production process. Two main challenges had to be overcome: first, the integration of the sensor lines in the existing Resin Transfer Moulding mould without modifying it; second, the demoulding of the component without damaging the sensor lines. The proposed embedding solution has proved successful. The wavelength shifts of the Fibre Bragg Gratings were observed from the initial production stages, over the resin injection, the complete curing of the resin and the cooling-down prior to demoulding. The sensors proved to be sensitive to detecting the resin flow front, vacuum and pressure increase into the mould and the temperature increase caused by the resin curing. Measurements were also acquired during the post-curing cycle. Residual strains during all steps of the process were derived from the sensors’ wavelength shift, showing values up to 0.2% in compression. Moreover, the capacitive sensors were able to follow-up the curing degree during the production process. The sensors proved able to detect the resin flow front, whereas thermocouples could not measure an appreciable increase of temperature due to the fact that the resin had the same temperature as the mould

    FBG-based fibre-optic current sensors for power systems protection : laboratory evaluation

    Conventional differential current unit protection schemes rely on a pair of electronic protection relays that measure current phasors separately at the boundaries of the protected zone. The scheme requires a separate, often optical, communications channel for the sharing of measurement information to enable the timely identification of and reaction to internal faults. The high voltage environment that the transducers must operate in poses a number of engineering problems stemming from the need for electrical isolation and requirement for transformation of high primary system current magnitudes. Additionally, when either the number of relays or distance between relays is increased, timing problems can arise due to the limited bandwidth, speed and changeable latencies of the communication channels and the increased computation requirements. Fibre-optical sensor systems are maturing as a technology and offer a number of advantages over conventional electronic sensor regimes, including the possession of inherent electrical isolation, chemical inertness, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and their small size and serial multiplexing capability. Fibre sensor systems are therefore experiencing increased uptake in industries that operate in harsh environments, such as oil and gas, or where specific requirements such as large step-out distances or resistance to radiation prohibit the use of electronic sensors. The Advanced Sensors Team within the Institute for Energy and Environment has developed fibre-optic point sensors for voltage and electrical current, based on fibre Bragg grating (FBG) technology, that have been applied successfully to power systems diagnostics. With the photonic systems capability to interrogate up to 100 km from source at kHz sample rates with up to 30 sensors in series, it is possible and highly desirable to adapt this technology for use in power systems protection, where immediate applications in unit and distance protection are clear. In this paper, the application of the FBG-based hybrid current sensor system to power systems protection is presented for the first time. Experimental tests of the response of an optical unit protection system to a range of internal and external fault scenarios are also reported. Secondary current inputs to the system are modelled using ATP and injected into the prototype test system via an APTS3 (Advanced Protection Testing System) unit. Fibre sensors, separated optically by 24 km of fibre, provide all measurement information via a single interrogation system situated at one end of the protected zone. Experimental results confirm high performance of the optical unit protection both in terms of sensitivity to internal faults and stability under external fault conditions. Therefore, the systems ability to overcome problems experienced in electronic relaying systems using conventional current sensing technologies is demonstrated. No separate communications channel is required in this configuration, with fault algorithms being deployed only at one location that need not be close to the protected zone. The fibre-optic current sensor systems capacity for long-distance interrogation and high sensor count qualify it for further applications in more complex protection schemes, or over larger distances, where a single fibre could form the basis of highly novel distributed protection schemes.     Creation of a Support Software for the Development of a System for Sending and Visualizing FBG Sensor Data for Aerospace Application

    Optical fiber-based sensors have rapidly increased their application fields across multiple engineering sectors. Their physical characteristics, including low weight, electrical passivity, immunity to electromagnetic disturbances, and high sensitivity, make them highly suitable for aerospace applications. A flying test bench was recently developed at the Politecnico di Torino to evaluate the performance of optical sensors applied to an aircraft model. To allows their fruition in near real-time, it was necessary to develop a pipeline of software capable of transmitting, saving, and displaying them on the ground. To carry out in-depth tests on their reliability it is necessary to carry out more tests with different sensors and configurations. However, doing flight tests for the sole purpose of testing the data acquisition system is too expensive and impractical. Therefore, it was developed an emulator software that can generate data like that obtained from the real system, saving time and resources. Thanks to it, it is now possible to exploit the complete test bench on the aircraft for the final verification campaign only. The results are therefore very positive and demonstrate the potential of the emulator also for the most recent applications
