UltraSwarm: A Further Step Towards a Flock of Miniature Helicopters
We describe further progress towards the development of a
MAV (micro aerial vehicle) designed as an enabling tool to investigate aerial flocking. Our research focuses on the use of low cost off the shelf vehicles and sensors to enable fast prototyping and to reduce development costs. Details on the design of the embedded electronics and the
modification of the chosen toy helicopter are presented, and the technique used for state estimation is described. The fusion of inertial data through an unscented Kalman filter is used to estimate the helicopter’s state, and this forms the main input to the control system. Since no detailed dynamic model of the helicopter in use is available, a method is proposed for automated system identification, and for subsequent controller design based on artificial evolution. Preliminary results obtained with a dynamic simulator of a helicopter are reported, along with some encouraging results for tackling the problem of flocking
Recognition of elementary arm movements using orientation of a tri-axial accelerometer located near the wrist
In this paper we present a method for recognising three fundamental movements of the human arm (reach and retrieve, lift cup to mouth, rotation of the arm) by determining the orientation of a tri-axial accelerometer located near the wrist. Our objective is to detect the occurrence of such movements performed with the impaired arm of a stroke patient during normal daily activities as a means to assess their rehabilitation. The method relies on accurately mapping transitions of predefined, standard orientations of the accelerometer to corresponding elementary arm movements. To evaluate the technique, kinematic data was collected from four healthy subjects and four stroke patients as they performed a number of activities involved in a representative activity of daily living, 'making-a-cup-of-tea'. Our experimental results show that the proposed method can independently recognise all three of the elementary upper limb movements investigated with accuracies in the range 91–99% for healthy subjects and 70–85% for stroke patients
Artificial Intelligence and Systems Theory: Applied to Cooperative Robots
This paper describes an approach to the design of a population of cooperative
robots based on concepts borrowed from Systems Theory and Artificial
Intelligence. The research has been developed under the SocRob project, carried
out by the Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the Institute for Systems and
Robotics - Instituto Superior Tecnico (ISR/IST) in Lisbon. The acronym of the
project stands both for "Society of Robots" and "Soccer Robots", the case study
where we are testing our population of robots. Designing soccer robots is a
very challenging problem, where the robots must act not only to shoot a ball
towards the goal, but also to detect and avoid static (walls, stopped robots)
and dynamic (moving robots) obstacles. Furthermore, they must cooperate to
defeat an opposing team. Our past and current research in soccer robotics
includes cooperative sensor fusion for world modeling, object recognition and
tracking, robot navigation, multi-robot distributed task planning and
coordination, including cooperative reinforcement learning in cooperative and
adversarial environments, and behavior-based architectures for real time task
execution of cooperating robot teams

A Learning-based Stochastic MPC Design for Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control to Handle Interfering Vehicles
Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication has a great potential to improve
reaction accuracy of different driver assistance systems in critical driving
situations. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC), which is an automated
application, provides drivers with extra benefits such as traffic throughput
maximization and collision avoidance. CACC systems must be designed in a way
that are sufficiently robust against all special maneuvers such as cutting-into
the CACC platoons by interfering vehicles or hard braking by leading cars. To
address this problem, a Neural- Network (NN)-based cut-in detection and
trajectory prediction scheme is proposed in the first part of this paper. Next,
a probabilistic framework is developed in which the cut-in probability is
calculated based on the output of the mentioned cut-in prediction block.
Finally, a specific Stochastic Model Predictive Controller (SMPC) is designed
which incorporates this cut-in probability to enhance its reaction against the
detected dangerous cut-in maneuver. The overall system is implemented and its
performance is evaluated using realistic driving scenarios from Safety Pilot

Research relative to the development of a cryogenic microwave cavity gradiometer for orbital use
The noncryogenic, single axis, gravity gradiometer which is characterized by a sensitivity of the order of 10 to the minus 2 power Eovos Units in a few sec integration time was investigated. The prototype of testing gradiometer on the earth surface by the free fall in vacuo method was expanded. An existing free fall tower facility and the possibility of adding inside the falling elevator cabin an air tight, sealed, cylindrical container with inside pressure or = -0.001 Torr were examined to test the gradiometer in free fall conditions inside this evacuated container. Earth's gravity anomalies are simulated with masses of suitable shape, weight, and location. The attitude of the falling gradiometer is monitored by a three axis gyro package mounted on the instrument package. It is concluded that the free fall testing of the gradiometer is both feasible and practical
On the coherency of dynamic load estimates for vehicles on flexible structures
This paper develops a novel form of a well-known signal processing technique, so as to be
applicable to the interaction between a heavy truck and a supporting bridge structure.
Motivated by the problem of structural health monitoring of bridges, a new modal
coherency function is defined. This relates the input action of moving wheel loads to the
dynamic response of the bridge, including the effects of unevenness of the road surface and
the vertical dynamics of the truck suspension. The analysis here is specifically aimed at
future experimental testing – the validation of axle load estimators obtained from sensors
on the truck. It is applicable even when no independent ‘ground truth’ for the dynamic
loads is available. The approach can be more widely used in the analysis of dynamic
interactions involving suspended moving loads on deformable structures, e.g. for structural
vibrations due to high-speed train
