    We are not alone: Melatonin and vitamin d may be good company during covid-19 pandemic

    Loneliness and social isolation are associated with depression, anxiety and a progressive loss of higher cognitive faculties, mainly in older adults. In the current pandemic situation, with serious restrictions that limit interactions with members of our social circles, these cognitive alterations are becoming progressively more obvious in young adults, adolescents and even children. With the addition of eating disorders, sleep disturbances, and lack of exposure to solar radiation due to confinement, the condition can be considerably worse. Fortunately, there are two allies which from a psychological point of view, have many common features and could help to reverse some of the effects of social isolation; these molecules are melatonin and vitamin D. Their complementary functions on circadian rhythmicity may be useful in reestablishing mood balance. Thus, we suggest a re-education in new hygienic-dietary habits, especially related to the maintenance of adequate levels of melatonin and vitamin D, which may help prevent and possibly reverse the cognitive and psychological disorders until social contact is reestablished.Fil: García Menéndez, Sebastián Marcelo Manuel.     Digital interventions for subjective and objective social isolation among individuals with mental health conditions: a scoping review

    Background: Social isolation encompasses subjective and objective concepts. Both are associated with negative health consequences and are more prevalent among people with mental health problems than among the general population. To alleviate social isolation, digital interventions have potential as accessible alternatives or adjuncts to face-to-face interventions. This scoping review aimed to describe the types of digital interventions evaluated for feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness in alleviating social isolation among individuals with mental health problems, and to present an overview of the quantitative evidence yielded to inform future intervention design. // Methods: We searched five electronic databases for quantitative and mixed methods studies published between January 2000 and July 2020. Studies were included if they evaluated digital interventions for individuals with mental health conditions, had subjective and/or objective social isolation as their primary outcome, or as one of their outcomes if no primary outcome was specified. Feasibility studies were included if feasibility outcomes were the primary outcomes and social isolation was among their secondary outcomes. A narrative synthesis was conducted to present our findings. The protocol was registered on Open Science Framework (doi:https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/CNX8A). // Results: Thirty-two studies were included for our review: 16 feasibility studies, seven single-group studies and nine effectiveness trials. There was great variation in the interventions, study designs and sample populations. Interventions included web-based programmes, phone-based programmes, blended interventions, socially assistive robots and virtual reality interventions. Many were feasibility studies, or otherwise not fully powered to detect an effect if one were present, thus preventing clear conclusions about clinical effectiveness. Satisfactory feasibility outcomes indicated potential for future trials to assess these interventions. // Conclusion: Our scoping review identified a range of digital approaches utilized to alleviate social isolation among individuals with mental health disorders. Conclusions regarding clinical effectiveness cannot be reached due to variability of approaches and lack of large-scale randomized controlled trials. To make clear recommendations for digital social isolation interventions, future research needs to be based on rigorous methods and larger samples. Future studies should also focus on utilizing theory-driven approaches and improving existing approaches to advance the field

    New techniques for neuro-rehabilitation: Transcranial Electric Stimulation and Virtual Reality

    Recovery of motor and cognitive performances after a neurological illness remains a significant challenge for rehabilitation specialists. The traditional rehabilitative interventions are usually delivered using a multidisciplinary approach, whose results are not always satisfactory. These limitations in functional recovery have led researchers to consider alternative approaches. The hypothesis of providing new therapeutic possibilities in the different patients treated is, as a rehabilitator, very rewarding and represents a challenge for the future. The application of simple and low-cost techniques, defined by the literature as "unconventional" or “novel”, can provide new ideas not only in the field of research but above all of application in clinical reality.A suitable approach to improve the rehabilitation outcome is to utilize these novel rehabilitation techniques that act as a substitute or an addition to the traditional ones. In this context, some recent approaches have been proposed that might increase the effectiveness of a traditional treatment. Among them, two techniques have been demonstrated to be very promising, namely non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) and Virtual Reality (VR).In light of the foregoing, my thesis has been divided into two main lines of research, namely: a) the study of the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in different neurological conditions; b) the application of VR (used alone or combined with tDCS) in the treatment of some neurocognitive disorders.     Accessibility of Health Data Representations for Older Adults: Challenges and Opportunities for Design

    Health data of consumer off-the-shelf wearable devices is often conveyed to users through visual data representations and analyses. However, this is not always accessible to people with disabilities or older people due to low vision, cognitive impairments or literacy issues. Due to trade-offs between aesthetics predominance or information overload, real-time user feedback may not be conveyed easily from sensor devices through visual cues like graphs and texts. These difficulties may hinder critical data understanding. Additional auditory and tactile feedback can also provide immediate and accessible cues from these wearable devices, but it is necessary to understand existing data representation limitations initially. To avoid higher cognitive and visual overload, auditory and haptic cues can be designed to complement, replace or reinforce visual cues. In this paper, we outline the challenges in existing data representation and the necessary evidence to enhance the accessibility of health information from personal sensing devices used to monitor health parameters such as blood pressure, sleep, activity, heart rate and more. By creating innovative and inclusive user feedback, users will likely want to engage and interact with new devices and their own data
