Theoretical Interpretations and Applications of Radial Basis Function Networks
Medical applications usually used Radial Basis Function Networks just as Artificial Neural Networks. However, RBFNs are Knowledge-Based Networks that can be interpreted in several way: Artificial Neural Networks, Regularization Networks, Support Vector Machines, Wavelet Networks, Fuzzy Controllers, Kernel Estimators, Instanced-Based Learners. A survey of their interpretations and of their corresponding learning algorithms is provided as well as a brief survey on dynamic learning algorithms. RBFNs' interpretations can suggest applications that are particularly interesting in medical domains

Learning salience amoung [sic] features through contingency in the CEL framework
Determining which features in an environment are salient given a task, salience assignment, is a central problem in Machine Learning. A related phenomenon, contingency (the conditions under which relative salience among environmental features is acquired), is central to learning and memory in animal psychology. This paper presents an analysis of a set of empirical data on contingency and an algorithm for the salience assignment problem. The algorithm presented is implemented in a working computer program which interacts with a simulated environment to produce contingent associative learning corresponding to relevant behavioral data. The model also makes specific empirical predictions that can be experimentally tested

A comparative survey of integrated learning systems
This paper presents the duction framework for unifying the three basic forms of inference - deduction, abduction, and induction - by specifying the possible relationships and influences among them in the context of integrated learning. Special assumptive forms of inference are defined that extend the use of these inference methods, and the properties of these forms are explored. A comparison to a related inference-based learning frame work is made. Finally several existing integrated learning programs are examined in the perspective of the duction framework

A survey of induction algorithms for machine learning
Central to all systems for machine learning from examples is an induction algorithm. The purpose of the algorithm is to generalize from a finite set of training examples a description consistent with the examples seen, and, hopefully, with the potentially infinite set of examples not seen. This paper surveys four machine learning induction algorithms. The knowledge representation schemes and a PDL description of algorithm control are emphasized. System characteristics that are peculiar to a domain of application are de-emphasized. Finally, a comparative summary of the learning algorithms is presented
Asimovian Adaptive Agents
The goal of this research is to develop agents that are adaptive and
predictable and timely. At first blush, these three requirements seem
contradictory. For example, adaptation risks introducing undesirable side
effects, thereby making agents' behavior less predictable. Furthermore,
although formal verification can assist in ensuring behavioral predictability,
it is known to be time-consuming. Our solution to the challenge of satisfying
all three requirements is the following. Agents have finite-state automaton
plans, which are adapted online via evolutionary learning (perturbation)
operators. To ensure that critical behavioral constraints are always satisfied,
agents' plans are first formally verified. They are then reverified after every
adaptation. If reverification concludes that constraints are violated, the
plans are repaired. The main objective of this paper is to improve the
efficiency of reverification after learning, so that agents have a sufficiently
rapid response time. We present two solutions: positive results that certain
learning operators are a priori guaranteed to preserve useful classes of
behavioral assurance constraints (which implies that no reverification is
needed for these operators), and efficient incremental reverification
algorithms for those learning operators that have negative a priori results
Adding New Tasks to a Single Network with Weight Transformations using Binary Masks
Visual recognition algorithms are required today to exhibit adaptive
abilities. Given a deep model trained on a specific, given task, it would be
highly desirable to be able to adapt incrementally to new tasks, preserving
scalability as the number of new tasks increases, while at the same time
avoiding catastrophic forgetting issues. Recent work has shown that masking the
internal weights of a given original conv-net through learned binary variables
is a promising strategy. We build upon this intuition and take into account
more elaborated affine transformations of the convolutional weights that
include learned binary masks. We show that with our generalization it is
possible to achieve significantly higher levels of adaptation to new tasks,
enabling the approach to compete with fine tuning strategies by requiring
slightly more than 1 bit per network parameter per additional task. Experiments
on two popular benchmarks showcase the power of our approach, that achieves the
new state of the art on the Visual Decathlon Challenge
Automated construction of a hierarchy of self-organized neural network classifiers
This paper documents an effort to design and implement a neural network-based, automatic classification system which dynamically constructs and trains a decision tree. The system is a combination of neural network and decision tree technology. The decision tree is constructed to partition a large classification problem into smaller problems. The neural network modules then solve these smaller problems. We used a variant of the Fuzzy ARTMAP neural network which can be trained much more quickly than traditional neural networks. The research extends the concept of self-organization from within the neural network to the overall structure of the dynamically constructed decision hierarchy. The primary advantage is avoidance of manual tedium and subjective bias in constructing decision hierarchies. Additionally, removing the need for manual construction of the hierarchy opens up a large class of potential classification applications. When tested on data from real-world images, the automatically generated hierarchies performed slightly better than an intuitive (handbuilt) hierarchy. Because the neural networks at the nodes of the decision hierarchy are solving smaller problems, generalization performance can really be improved if the number of features used to solve these problems is reduced. Algorithms for automatically selecting which features to use for each individual classification module were also implemented. We were able to achieve the same level of performance as in previous manual efforts, but in an efficient, automatic manner. The technology developed has great potential in a number of commercial areas, including data mining, pattern recognition, and intelligent interfaces for personal computer applications.
