Crowd detection and counting using a static and dynamic platform: state of the art
Automated object detection and crowd density estimation are popular and important area in visual surveillance research. The last decades witnessed many significant research in this field however, it is still a challenging problem for automatic visual surveillance. The ever increase in research of the field of crowd dynamics and crowd motion necessitates a detailed and updated survey of different techniques and trends in this field. This paper presents a survey on crowd detection and crowd density estimation from moving platform and surveys the different methods employed for this purpose. This review category and delineates several detections and counting estimation methods that have been applied for the examination of scenes from static and moving platforms
Class-Agnostic Counting
Nearly all existing counting methods are designed for a specific object
class. Our work, however, aims to create a counting model able to count any
class of object. To achieve this goal, we formulate counting as a matching
problem, enabling us to exploit the image self-similarity property that
naturally exists in object counting problems. We make the following three
contributions: first, a Generic Matching Network (GMN) architecture that can
potentially count any object in a class-agnostic manner; second, by
reformulating the counting problem as one of matching objects, we can take
advantage of the abundance of video data labeled for tracking, which contains
natural repetitions suitable for training a counting model. Such data enables
us to train the GMN. Third, to customize the GMN to different user
requirements, an adapter module is used to specialize the model with minimal
effort, i.e. using a few labeled examples, and adapting only a small fraction
of the trained parameters. This is a form of few-shot learning, which is
practical for domains where labels are limited due to requiring expert
knowledge (e.g. microbiology). We demonstrate the flexibility of our method on
a diverse set of existing counting benchmarks: specifically cells, cars, and
human crowds. The model achieves competitive performance on cell and crowd
counting datasets, and surpasses the state-of-the-art on the car dataset using
only three training images. When training on the entire dataset, the proposed

Utilising gamification approaches to derive crowd pattern/crowd context from aerial images of major events
Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Geospatial TechnologiesA large number of casualties occur during emergencies in highly-crowded public spaces of major events like annual anniversaries, religious festivals, big parties and football matches due to stampedes. It has been often observed that poor resource management is one of the key areas that could be improved to solve this problem. In this study,a geo-game-based approach has been adopted to alert responsible authorities of highly crowded regions as an early warning system and also provide them with optimal dispersal routes. In the Android-based game that was developed for this study, the players could draw polygons on real-time imageries of the area under study obtained from unmanned aerial vehicles and classify them into categories based on how crowded the region is. This data is submitted to a web server which is processed to find suitable least-cost routes by which the people in the crowded regions can be brought to safety in case of an emergency. The spatial distribution of people could be forwarded to appropriate authorities in-charge of the administration highlighting extremely crowded regions which need their attention thereby prompting redirection of security personnel. Additionally, the calculated dispersal routes could be used by them as suggestions to avoid a stampede and ensure safety in case the situation turns worse
A Wide Area Multiview Static Crowd Estimation System Using UAV and 3D Training Simulator
Crowd size estimation is a challenging problem, especially when the crowd is spread over a significant geographical area. It has applications in monitoring of rallies and demonstrations and in calculating the assistance requirements in humanitarian disasters. Therefore, accomplishing a crowd surveillance system for large crowds constitutes a significant issue. UAV-based techniques are an appealing choice for crowd estimation over a large region, but they present a variety of interesting challenges, such as integrating per-frame estimates through a video without counting individuals twice. Large quantities of annotated training data are required to design, train, and test such a system. In this paper, we have first reviewed several crowd estimation techniques, existing crowd simulators and data sets available for crowd analysis. Later, we have described a simulation system to provide such data, avoiding the need for tedious and error-prone manual annotation. Then, we have evaluated synthetic video from the simulator using various existing single-frame crowd estimation techniques. Our findings show that the simulated data can be used to train and test crowd estimation, thereby providing a suitable platform to develop such techniques. We also propose an automated UAV-based 3D crowd estimation system that can be used for approximately static or slow-moving crowds, such as public events, political rallies, and natural or man-made disasters. We evaluate the results by applying our new framework to a variety of scenarios with varying crowd sizes. The proposed system gives promising results using widely accepted metrics including MAE, RMSE, Precision, Recall, and F1 score to validate the results
