Scheduling for Multi-Camera Surveillance in LTE Networks
Wireless surveillance in cellular networks has become increasingly important,
while commercial LTE surveillance cameras are also available nowadays.
Nevertheless, most scheduling algorithms in the literature are throughput,
fairness, or profit-based approaches, which are not suitable for wireless
surveillance. In this paper, therefore, we explore the resource allocation
problem for a multi-camera surveillance system in 3GPP Long Term Evolution
(LTE) uplink (UL) networks. We minimize the number of allocated resource blocks
(RBs) while guaranteeing the coverage requirement for surveillance systems in
LTE UL networks. Specifically, we formulate the Camera Set Resource Allocation
Problem (CSRAP) and prove that the problem is NP-Hard. We then propose an
Integer Linear Programming formulation for general cases to find the optimal
solution. Moreover, we present a baseline algorithm and devise an approximation
algorithm to solve the problem. Simulation results based on a real surveillance
map and synthetic datasets manifest that the number of allocated RBs can be
effectively reduced compared to the existing approach for LTE networks.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
Early forest fire detection by vision-enabled wireless sensor networks
Wireless sensor networks constitute a powerful technology particularly suitable for environmental monitoring. With regard to wildfires, they enable low-cost fine-grained surveillance of hazardous locations like wildland-urban interfaces. This paper presents work developed during the last 4 years targeting a vision-enabled wireless sensor network node for the reliable, early on-site detection of forest fires. The tasks carried out ranged from devising a robust vision algorithm for smoke detection to the design and physical implementation of a power-efficient smart imager tailored to the characteristics of such an algorithm. By integrating this smart imager with a commercial wireless platform, we endowed the resulting system with vision capabilities and radio communication. Numerous tests were arranged in different natural scenarios in order to progressively tune all the parameters involved in the autonomous operation of this prototype node. The last test carried out, involving the prescribed burning of a 95 x 20-m shrub plot, confirmed the high degree of reliability of our approach in terms of both successful early detection and a very low false-alarm rate. An Advanced Home ElderCare Service
With the increase of welfare cost all over the developed world, there is a need to resort to new technologies
that could help reduce this enormous cost and provide some quality eldercare services. This paper presents a
middleware-level solution that integrates monitoring and emergency detection solutions with networking solutions. The proposed system enables efficient integration between a variety of sensors and actuators deployed
at home for emergency detection and provides a framework for creating and managing rescue teams willing
to assist elders in case of emergency situations. A prototype of the proposed system was designed and implemented. Results were obtained from both computer simulations and a real-network testbed. These results show that the proposed system can help overcome some of the current problems and help reduce the enormous cost of eldercare service
