    Sentiment Analysis in Social Streams

    In this chapter we review and discuss the state of the art on sentiment analysis in social streams –such as web forums, micro-blogging systems, and so- cial networks–, aiming to clarify how user opinions, affective states, and intended emotional effects are extracted from user generated content, how they are modeled, and how they could be finally exploited. We explain why sentiment analysis tasks are more difficult for social streams than for other textual sources, and entail going beyond classic text-based opinion mining techniques. We show, for example, that social streams may use vocabularies and expressions that exist outside the main- stream of standard, formal languages, and may reflect complex dynamics in the opinions and sentiments expressed by individuals and communities

    Combating User Misbehavior on Social Media

    Social media encourages user participation and facilitates user’s self-expression like never before. While enriching user behavior in a spectrum of means, many social media platforms have become breeding grounds for user misbehavior. In this dissertation we focus on understanding and combating three specific threads of user misbehaviors that widely exist on social media — spamming, manipulation, and distortion. First, we address the challenge of detecting spam links. Rather than rely on traditional blacklist-based or content-based methods, we examine the behavioral factors of both who is posting the link and who is clicking on the link. The core intuition is that these behavioral signals may be more difficult to manipulate than traditional signals. We find that this purely behavioral approach can achieve good performance for robust behavior-based spam link detection. Next, we deal with uncovering manipulated behavior of link sharing. We propose a four-phase approach to model, identify, characterize, and classify organic and organized groups who engage in link sharing. The key motivating insight is that group-level behavioral signals can distinguish manipulated user groups. We find that levels of organized behavior vary by link type and that the proposed approach achieves good performance measured by commonly-used metrics. Finally, we investigate a particular distortion behavior: making bullshit (BS) statements on social media. We explore the factors impacting the perception of BS and what leads users to ultimately perceive and call a post BS. We begin by preparing a crowdsourced collection of real social media posts that have been called BS. We then build a classification model that can determine what posts are more likely to be called BS. Our experiments suggest our classifier has the potential of leveraging linguistic cues for detecting social media posts that are likely to be called BS. We complement these three studies with a cross-cutting investigation of learning user topical profiles, which can shed light into what subjects each user is associated with, which can benefit the understanding of the connection between user and misbehavior. Concretely, we propose a unified model for learning user topical profiles that simultaneously considers multiple footprints and we show how these footprints can be embedded in a generalized optimization framework. Through extensive experiments on millions of real social media posts, we find our proposed models can effectively combat user misbehavior on social media

    Computational Sociolinguistics: A Survey

    Language is a social phenomenon and variation is inherent to its social nature. Recently, there has been a surge of interest within the computational linguistics (CL) community in the social dimension of language. In this article we present a survey of the emerging field of "Computational Sociolinguistics" that reflects this increased interest. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of CL research on sociolinguistic themes, featuring topics such as the relation between language and social identity, language use in social interaction and multilingual communication. Moreover, we demonstrate the potential for synergy between the research communities involved, by showing how the large-scale data-driven methods that are widely used in CL can complement existing sociolinguistic studies, and how sociolinguistics can inform and challenge the methods and assumptions employed in CL studies. We hope to convey the possible benefits of a closer collaboration between the two communities and conclude with a discussion of open challenges.Comment: To appear in Computational Linguistics.     Contextual Social Networking

    The thesis centers around the multi-faceted research question of how contexts may be detected and derived that can be used for new context aware Social Networking services and for improving the usefulness of existing Social Networking services, giving rise to the notion of Contextual Social Networking. In a first foundational part, we characterize the closely related fields of Contextual-, Mobile-, and Decentralized Social Networking using different methods and focusing on different detailed aspects. A second part focuses on the question of how short-term and long-term social contexts as especially interesting forms of context for Social Networking may be derived. We focus on NLP based methods for the characterization of social relations as a typical form of long-term social contexts and on Mobile Social Signal Processing methods for deriving short-term social contexts on the basis of geometry of interaction and audio. We furthermore investigate, how personal social agents may combine such social context elements on various levels of abstraction. The third part discusses new and improved context aware Social Networking service concepts. We investigate special forms of awareness services, new forms of social information retrieval, social recommender systems, context aware privacy concepts and services and platforms supporting Open Innovation and creative processes. Die (noch nicht abgeschlossene) erfolgreiche Umsetzung dieses Programmes fĂĽhrt auf ein Konzept, das man als Contextual Social Networking bezeichnen kann. In einem grundlegenden ersten Teil werden die eng zusammenhängenden Gebiete Contextual Social Networking, Mobile Social Networking und Decentralized Social Networking mit verschiedenen Methoden und unter Fokussierung auf verschiedene Detail-Aspekte näher beleuchtet und in Zusammenhang gesetzt. Ein zweiter Teil behandelt die Frage, wie soziale Kurzzeit- und Langzeit-Kontexte als fĂĽr das Social Networking besonders interessante Formen von Kontext gemessen und abgeleitet werden können. Ein Fokus liegt hierbei auf NLP Methoden zur Charakterisierung sozialer Beziehungen als einer typischen Form von sozialem Langzeit-Kontext. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf Methoden aus dem Mobile Social Signal Processing zur Ableitung sinnvoller sozialer Kurzzeit-Kontexte auf der Basis von Interaktionsgeometrien und Audio-Daten. Es wird ferner untersucht, wie persönliche soziale Agenten Kontext-Elemente verschiedener Abstraktionsgrade miteinander kombinieren können.     BlogForever: D3.1 Preservation Strategy Report

    This report describes preservation planning approaches and strategies recommended by the BlogForever project as a core component of a weblog repository design. More specifically, we start by discussing why we would want to preserve weblogs in the first place and what it is exactly that we are trying to preserve. We further present a review of past and present work and highlight why current practices in web archiving do not address the needs of weblog preservation adequately. We make three distinctive contributions in this volume: a) we propose transferable practical workflows for applying a combination of established metadata and repository standards in developing a weblog repository, b) we provide an automated approach to identifying significant properties of weblog content that uses the notion of communities and how this affects previous strategies, c) we propose a sustainability plan that draws upon community knowledge through innovative repository design

    An Integrated Model for User Attribute Discovery: A Case Study on Political Affiliation Identification

    Discovering user demographic attributes from social media is a problem of considerable interest. The problem setting can be generalized to include three components - users, topics and behaviors. In recent studies on this problem, however, the behavior between users and topics are not effectively incorporated. In our work, we proposed an integrated unsupervised model which takes into consideration all the three components integral to the task. Furthermore, our model incorporates collaborative filtering with probabilistic matrix factorization to solve the data sparsity problem, a computational challenge common to all such tasks. We evaluated our method on a case study of user political affiliation identification, and compared against state-of-the-art baselines.
