D-Brane Probes of Special Holonomy Manifolds
Using D2-brane probes, we study various properties of M-theory on singular,
non-compact manifolds of G_2 and Spin(7) holonomy. We derive mirror pairs of
N=1 supersymmetric three-dimensional gauge theories, and apply this technique
to realize exceptional holonomy manifolds as both Coulomb and Higgs branches of
the D2-brane world-volume theory. We derive a ``G_2 quotient construction'' of
non-compact manifolds which admit a metric of G_2 holonomy. We further discuss
the moduli space of such manifolds, including the structure of geometrical
transitions in each case. For completeness, we also include familiar examples
of manifolds with SU(3) and Sp(2) holonomy, where some of the new ideas are
clarified and tested.Comment: 79 pages, Late
Competing Adiabatic Thouless Pumps in Enlarged Parameter Spaces
The transfer of conserved charges through insulating matter via smooth
deformations of the Hamiltonian is known as quantum adiabatic, or Thouless,
pumping. Central to this phenomenon are Hamiltonians whose insulating gap is
controlled by a multi-dimensional (usually two-dimensional) parameter space in
which paths can be defined for adiabatic changes in the Hamiltonian, i.e.,
without closing the gap. Here, we extend the concept of Thouless pumps of band
insulators by considering a larger, three-dimensional parameter space. We show
that the connectivity of this parameter space is crucial for defining quantum
pumps, demonstrating that, as opposed to the conventional two-dimensional case,
pumped quantities depend not only on the initial and final points of
Hamiltonian evolution but also on the class of the chosen path and preserved
symmetries. As such, we distinguish the scenarios of closed/open paths of
Hamiltonian evolution, finding that different closed cycles can lead to the
pumping of different quantum numbers, and that different open paths may point
to distinct scenarios for surface physics. As explicit examples, we consider
models similar to simple models used to describe topological insulators, but
with doubled degrees of freedom compared to a minimal topological insulator
model. The extra fermionic flavors from doubling allow for extra gapping
terms/adiabatic parameters - besides the usual topological mass which preserves
the topology-protecting discrete symmetries - generating an enlarged adiabatic
parameter-space. We consider cases in one and three \emph{spatial} dimensions,
and our results in three dimensions may be realized in the context of
crystalline topological insulators, as we briefly discuss.Comment: 21 pages, 7 Figure
A hybrid version of the tilted axis cranking model and its application to ^{128}Ba
A hybrid version the deformed nuclear potential is suggested, which combines
a spherical Woods Saxon potential with a deformed Nilsson potential. It removes
the problems of the conventional Nilsson potential in the mass 130 region.
Based on the hybrid potential, tilted axis cranking calculations are carried
out for the magnetic dipole band in ^{128}Ba.Comment: 10 pages 6 figure
Confinement Phenomenology in the Bethe-Salpeter Equation
We consider the solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in Euclidean metric
for a qbar-q vector meson in the circumstance where the dressed quark
propagators have time-like complex conjugate mass poles. This approximates
features encountered in recent QCD modeling via the Dyson-Schwinger equations;
the absence of real mass poles simulates quark confinement. The analytic
continuation in the total momentum necessary to reach the mass shell for a
meson sufficiently heavier than 1 GeV leads to the quark poles being within the
integration domain for two variables in the standard approach. Through Feynman
integral techniques, we show how the analytic continuation can be implemented
in a way suitable for a practical numerical solution. We show that the would-be
qbar-q width to the meson generated from one quark pole is exactly cancelled by
the effect of the conjugate partner pole; the meson mass remains real and there
is no spurious qbar-q production threshold. The ladder kernel we employ is
consistent with one-loop perturbative QCD and has a two-parameter infrared
structure found to be successful in recent studies of the light SU(3) meson
sector.Comment: Submitted for publication; 10.5x2-column pages, REVTEX 4, 3
