Current source for LED drivers based on a linear-assisted DC/DC regulator

    Get PDF
This article presents a proposal of current source based on a linear-assisted DC/DC converter, in which a linear voltage regulator assists a switching DC/DC converter in order to obtain a compact circuit with advantages of both alternatives; i.e., high efficiency (similar to the switching converter), and low output ripple and fast reaction to the load changes (similar to the linear regulator). In order to reduce the power dissipation in the linear regulator, it is considered as an assisted circuit for providing just a little fraction of the load current. Furthermore, this stage provides the required clock signal for the switching counterpart, resulting in reduction of the complexity in the design of the control scheme for the switching converter and a compact topology, especially for on-chip practical implementations, since no output capacitors are required. This last advantage provides the possibility of obtaining goodperformance current-source drivers for LED technology in lighting applications. The implementation and results indicate that the proposed linear-assisted DC/DC regulator-based current source can achieve a notably compacting and higher performance, while consuming less power in comparison to linear alternatives.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

This Mixed Signal Letter presents a proposal of four-quadrant linear-assisted DC/DC voltage regulator. In this topology, a class-AB linear voltage amplifier assists a four-quadrant switching DC/DC converter in order to obtain a compact circuit with advantages of both alternatives; i.e., high efficiency, inherent in switching converters, and low output ripple and fast reaction to the load changes that are characteristics of linear regulators. In order to reduce the power dissipation in the linear regulator, it is considered as an assisting circuit for providing just a small fraction of the total load current. Furthermore, this stage provides the required clock signal for the switching counterpart, obtaining a compact topology thanks to the reduction of the complexity in the design of the control scheme for the switching converter. In fact, the proposed topology can be addressed to on-chip practical implementations, since no output capacitors are required. This last advantage provides the possibility of obtaining good-performance power-supply modulators for envelope tracking techniques in power amplifiers. The implementation and results indicate that the proposed four-quadrant linear-assisted DC/DC regulator can achieve a notably compacting and higher performance, while consuming less power in comparison to linear alternatives.Postprint (author's final draft

Linear-assisted DC/DC converters with modified current-mode control applied to photovoltaic solar systems

This article shows the proposal of a current-mode one-cycle control for linear-assisted DC/DC converters. Linearassisted DC/DC converters are structures that allow to take advantages of the two classic alternatives in the design of power supply systems: voltage linear regulators (classic NPN topology or LDO –low dropout–) and switching DC/DC converters. The current-mode one-cycle control technique is proposed in order to obtain the duty cycle of the linear-assisted converter switch. The proposed structure can provide an output with suitable load and line regulations. Thus, the paper shows the design and simulation results of the proposed current-mode one-cycle linear-assisted converter.Postprint (published version

Supercapacitor assisted LDO (SCALDO) techniquean extra low frequency design approach to high efficiency DC-DC converters and how it compares with the classical switched capacitor converters

    Get PDF
Supercapacitor assisted low dropout regulators (SCALDO) were proposed as an alternative design approach to DC-DC converters, where the supercapacitor circulation frequency (switching frequency) is in the order of few Hz to few 10s of Hz, with an output stage based on a low dropout regulator stage. For converters such as 12–5V, 5–3.3V and 5–1.5V, the technique provides efficiency improvement factors of 2, 1.33 and 3 respectively, in compared to linear converters with same input-output combinations. In a 5–1.5V SCALDO regulator, using thin profile supercapacitors in the range of fractional farads to few farads, this translates to an approximate end to end efficiency of near 90%. However, there were concerns that this patented technique is merely a variation of well-known switched capacitor (charge pump) converters. This paper is aimed at providing a broad overview of the capability of SCALDO technique with generalized theory, indicating its capabilities and limitations, and comparing the practical performance with a typical switched capacitor converter of similar current capability

This article describes a single-input dual output (SIDO) linear-assisted DC/DC converter. Linear-assisted DC/DC converters are structures that allow to take advantages of the two classic alternatives in the design of power supply systems: voltage linear regulators and switching DC/DC converters. Thanks to the combination of a switching converter and two voltage linear regulators, the proposed SIDO converter provides two independent outputs with suitable load and line regulations. In the presented topology the SIDO linear-assisted DC/DC converter operates at the boundary of continuous conduction mode(CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) with variable switching frequency.Postprint (published version

Current-Steering Switching Policy for a SIDO Linear-Assisted Hysteretic DC/DC Converter

This paper proposes the use of linear-assisted switching power converters in the context of single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) applications. By combining a DC/DC ripplecontrolled switching power converter with the respective voltage linear regulators at each output, improved performance in terms of load and line regulations is obtained. To achieve that aim, a current-steering switching policy is proposed, together with a resource-aware circuit implementation. The ripple-based hysteretic control results in variable switching frequency to guarantee critical conduction mode (boundary of CCM and DCM).Postprint (published version
