    Donald (Don) Arthur Berry, born May 26, 1940 in Southbridge, Massachusetts, earned his A.B. degree in mathematics from Dartmouth College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in statistics from Yale University. He served first on the faculty at the University of Minnesota and subsequently held endowed chair positions at Duke University and The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Center.     Intelligent computing applications to assist perceptual training in medical imaging

    The research presented in this thesis represents a body of work which addresses issues in medical imaging, primarily as it applies to breast cancer screening and laparoscopic surgery. The concern here is how computer based methods can aid medical practitioners in these tasks. Thus, research is presented which develops both new techniques of analysing radiologists performance data and also new approaches of examining surgeons visual behaviour when they are undertaking laparoscopic training. Initially a new chest X-Ray self-assessment application is described which has been developed to assess and improve radiologists performance in detecting lung cancer. Then, in breast cancer screening, a method of identifying potential poor performance outliers at an early stage in a national self-assessment scheme is demonstrated. Additionally, a method is presented to optimize whether a radiologist, in using this scheme, has correctly localised and identified an abnormality or made an error. One issue in appropriately measuring radiological performance in breast screening is that both the size of clinical monitors used and the difficulty in linking the medical image to the observer s line of sight hinders suitable eye tracking. Consequently, a new method is presented which links these two items. Laparoscopic surgeons have similar issues to radiologists in interpreting a medical display but with the added complications of hand-eye co-ordination.     Cancer Care: Mobile Application For Cancer Care Adaptability

    This project aims to help Cancer patient and their Care Givers to adapt with their new lifestyle after being diagnosed with cancer. Past research has found that majority of cancer patient and their care givers are having a difficult time to cope with cancer which causes them to accumulate stress and depression. Therefore, having to keep track with treatments, dealing with side effects, keep medical record history could be exhausting and essentially time -consuming; where in some cases, the waste of time can lead to a much worse condition of their illness. The goal of this project is to minimize effort and time consumption in keeping track of information and adapting with changes faced when diagnosed with cancer. Cancer Care Mobile Application is essential for anyone who wishes to overcome daily challenges to adapt with Cancer. It helps the user to learn more about cancer such as cancer stages, symptoms, survival rate, step by step to-do-list or check list for cancer patient to plan ahead, financial support, treatments schedule, doctor’s appointment and support group channels. Hence, it also may provide notifications or reminders to ease their daily lives to optimize and make use of this latest invention as a platform for Cancer Patient and their care givers to monitor progress. Results of the findings have an overall influence on the mobile application design itself, where future works will aim to further give improvement on the design and development of the mobile application

    Smart healthcare, an integral element of connected living, plays a pivotal role in fulfilling a fundamental human need. The burgeoning field of smart healthcare is poised to generate substantial revenue in the foreseeable future. Its multifaceted framework encompasses vital components such as the Internet of Things (IoT), medical sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), edge and cloud computing, as well as next-generation wireless communication technologies. Many research papers discuss smart healthcare and healthcare more broadly. Numerous nations have strategically deployed the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) alongside other measures to combat the propagation of COVID-19. This combined effort has not only enhanced the safety of frontline healthcare workers but has also augmented the overall efficacy in managing the pandemic, subsequently reducing its impact on human lives and mortality rates. Remarkable strides have been made in both applications and technology within the IoMT domain. However, it is imperative to acknowledge that this technological advancement has introduced certain challenges, particularly in the realm of security. The rapid and extensive adoption of IoMT worldwide has magnified issues related to security and privacy. These encompass a spectrum of concerns, ranging from replay attacks, man-in-the-middle attacks, impersonation, privileged insider threats, remote hijacking, password guessing, and denial of service (DoS) attacks, to malware incursions. In this comprehensive review, we undertake a comparative analysis of existing strategies designed for the detection and prevention of malware in IoT environments.Comment: 7 page

    Insure Me Cancer Free: An Intervention Utilizing a Dynamic Communication Model

    The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a pilot insurance company-based intervention guided by a Dynamic Communication Model to increase breast and colorectal cancer screening in Appalachian WV, a medically-underserved population with low screening rates. Our team and key informants developed letters and a website to promote cancer screening, and these were mailed to patients needing screening (breast: n = 232; colorectal: n = 324). After 6 months, a sample of women (n = 22) and men (n = 27) continuing to need screening received telephonic case management counseling. Screening rates were assessed at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. A final telephone interview was conducted at 12 months with a subset of participants. Key informants (n = 21) provided feedback on the letter/website, resulting in improved readability, organization, and informational content. The letter/website had minimal impact on screening (breast: n = 8; colon: n = 5). The final telephone interview of plan members (n = 12) found they liked the personalized approach and appreciated learning more about cancer, and that you need to “catch it early for good treatment.” All understood the counseling and believed the information was correct. Nearly all intended to get screened. Following counseling, screening numbers increased (total breast: n = 39; total colon: n = 18). Our theoretically-driven, case management counseling intervention was well received and has the potential to increase cancer screening rates, particularly in a rural, medically-underserved populations
