Apparatus and method for congestion control in high speed networks
An adjustable bit rate (ABR) feedback control scheme is provided where the effects of multiloop delays and high priority traffic transmission are built into the control model. The data traffic is filtered by a low pass filter. Then, the low frequency bandwidth of the filtered traffic is measured and compared to a predetermined threshold. If the measured value exceeds the threshold, the ABR traffic flow is reduced. If the measured value is less than the threshold, the ABR traffic flow is increased. In addition, a General Prediction Control (GPC) method may be applied to the control model for optimal performance. An object of the invention is to minimize the unused link capacity subject to no congestion, where the ABR traffic is adapted to the low frequency variation of high priority traffic flow for high efficiency.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste
Design of switch architecture for the geographical cell transport protocol
The Internet is divided into multiple layers to reduce and manage complexity. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) developed a 7 layer network model and had been revised to a 5 layer TCP/IP based Internet Model. The layers of the Internet can also be divided into top layer TCP/IP protocol suite layers and the underlying transport network layers. SONET/SDH, a dominant transport network, was designed initially for circuit based telephony services. Advancement in the internet world with voice and video services had pushed SONET/SDH to operate with reduced efficiencies and increased costs. Hence, redesign and redeployment of the transport network has been and continues to be a subject of research and development. Several projects are underway to explore new transport network ideas such as G.709 and GMPLS.
This dissertation presents the Geographical Cell Transport (GCT) protocol as a candidate for a next generation transport network. The GCT transport protocol and its cell format are described. The benefits provided by the proposed GCT transport protocol as compared to the existing transport networks are investigated. Existing switch architectures are explored and a best architecture to be implemented in VLSI for the proposed transport network input queued virtual output queuing is obtained. The objectives of this switch are high performance, guaranteed fairness among all inputs and outputs, robust behavior under different traffic patterns, and support for Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning. An implementation of this switch architecture is carried out using HDL.
A novel pseudo random number generation unit is designed to nullify the bias present in an arbitration unit. The validity of the designed is checked by developing a traffic load model. The speedup factor required in the switch to maintain desired throughput is explored and is presented in detail. Various simulation results are shown to study the behavior of the designed switch under uniform and hotspot traffic. The simulation results show that QoS behavior and the crossing traffic through the switch has not been affected by hotspots
Time Driven Priority Router Implementation and First Experiments
This paper reports on the implementation of Time-Driven Priority (TDP) scheduling on a FreeBSD platform. This work is part of a TDP prototyping and demonstration project aimed at showing the implications of TDP deployment in packet-switched networks, especially benefits for real-time applications. This paper focuses on practical aspects related to the implementation of the technology on a Personal Computer (PC)-based router and presents the experimental results obtained on a testbed network. The basic building blocks of a TDP router are described and implementation choices are discussed. The relevant results achieved and here presented can be categorized into two types: qualitative results, including the successful integration of all needed blocks and the insight obtained on the complexity related to the implementation of a TDP router, and quantitative ones, including measures of achievable network utilization and of jitter experienced on a fully-loaded TDP network. A hybrid queueing model for fast broadband networking simulation
PhDThis research focuses on the investigation of a fast simulation method for broadband
telecommunication networks, such as ATM networks and IP networks. As a result of
this research, a hybrid simulation model is proposed, which combines the analytical
modelling and event-driven simulation modelling to speeding up the overall
simulation.
The division between foreground and background traffic and the way of dealing with
these different types of traffic to achieve improvement in simulation time is the major
contribution reported in this thesis. Background traffic is present to ensure that proper
buffering behaviour is included during the course of the simulation experiments, but
only the foreground traffic of interest is simulated, unlike traditional simulation
techniques. Foreground and background traffic are dealt with in a different way.
To avoid the need for extra events on the event list, and the processing overhead,
associated with the background traffic, the novel technique investigated in this
research is to remove the background traffic completely, adjusting the service time of
the queues for the background traffic to compensate (in most cases, the service time
for the foreground traffic will increase). By removing the background traffic from the
event-driven simulator the number of cell processing events dealt with is reduced
drastically.
Validation of this approach shows that, overall, the method works well, but the
simulation using this method does have some differences compared with experimental
results on a testbed. The reason for this is mainly because of the assumptions behind
the analytical model that make the modelling tractable.
Hence, the analytical model needs to be adjusted. This is done by having a neural
network trained to learn the relationship between the input traffic parameters and the
output difference between the proposed model and the testbed. Following this
training, simulations can be run using the output of the neural network to adjust the
analytical model for those particular traffic conditions.
The approach is applied to cell scale and burst scale queueing to simulate an ATM
switch, and it is also used to simulate an IP router. In all the applications, the method
ensures a fast simulation as well as an accurate result
