Design and motion control of a 6-UPS fully parallel robot for long bone fracture reduction : a thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Engineering in Mechatronics at Massey University
The incidences of long bone fractures in New Zealand are approximately 1 in 10,000. Long bones such as tibia and femur have complicated anatomic structures, making the realignment of these long bone fractures reliant on the skill of the surgeon. The drawbacks of current practice result in long time exposure to radiation, slow recovery and possible morbidity. A semi-automated long bone fracture reduction system based on a 6-DOF parallel robot platform has been in development since 2004. The developed 6-DOF parallel robot platform comprises of six linear actuators with rotary incremental encoders. To implement a realignment of long bone fractures, a framework for the 6-DOF platform robot has been developed. The inverse kinematics and singularity of the 6-DOF parallel robot has been studied to obtain the actions and Jacobin matrices. In motion control a multiple axis motion controller and amplifiers were used for 6-DOF parallel robot. PID tuning algorithms were developed based on the combination of the general tuning result and the contour control principle. The PID parameters have been validated by a number of experiments. The practical realignment of bone fractures requires a "Pull-Rotate-Push" action implemented by the 6-DOF parallel robot. After calibration, the reduction trajectories were generated accurately. The actual trials on the artificial fractures have shown that the robot developed is capable of performing the required reduction motion
The Ariadne's Clew Algorithm
We present a new approach to path planning, called the "Ariadne's clew
algorithm". It is designed to find paths in high-dimensional continuous spaces
and applies to robots with many degrees of freedom in static, as well as
dynamic environments - ones where obstacles may move. The Ariadne's clew
algorithm comprises two sub-algorithms, called Search and Explore, applied in
an interleaved manner. Explore builds a representation of the accessible space
while Search looks for the target. Both are posed as optimization problems. We
describe a real implementation of the algorithm to plan paths for a six degrees
of freedom arm in a dynamic environment where another six degrees of freedom
arm is used as a moving obstacle. Experimental results show that a path is
found in about one second without any pre-processing
Design and Evaluation of the LOPES Exoskeleton Robot for Interactive Gait Rehabilitation
This paper introduces a newly developed gait rehabilitation device. The device, called LOPES, combines a freely translatable and 2-D-actuated pelvis segment with a leg exoskeleton containing three actuated rotational joints: two at the hip and one at the knee. The joints are impedance controlled to allow bidirectional mechanical interaction between the robot and the training subject. Evaluation measurements show that the device allows both a "pa- tient-in-charge" and "robot-in-charge" mode, in which the robot is controlled either to follow or to guide a patient, respectively. Electromyography (EMG) measurements (one subject) on eight important leg muscles, show that free walking in the device strongly resembles free treadmill walking; an indication that the device can offer task-specific gait training. The possibilities and limitations to using the device as gait measurement tool are also shown at the moment position measurements are not accurate enough for inverse-dynamical gait analysis
Smart hands for the EVA retriever
Dexterous, robotic hands are required for the extravehicular activity retriever (EVAR) system being developed by the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). These hands, as part of the EVAR system, must be able to grasp objects autonomously and securely which inadvertently separate from the Space Station. Development of the required hands was initiated in 1987. Outlined here are the hand development activities, including design considerations, progress to date, and future plans. Several types of dexterous hands that were evaluated, along with a proximity-sensing capability that was developed to initiate a reflexive, adaptive grasp, are described. The evaluations resulted in the design and fabrication of a 6-degree-of-freedom (DOF) hand that has two fingers and a thumb arranged in an anthropomorphic configuration. Finger joint force and position sensors are included in the design, as well as infrared proximity sensors which allow initiation of the grasp sequence when an object is detected within the grasp envelope

Experimental comparison of parameter estimation methods in adaptive robot control
In the literature on adaptive robot control a large variety of parameter estimation methods have been proposed, ranging from tracking-error-driven gradient methods to combined tracking- and prediction-error-driven least-squares type adaptation methods. This paper presents experimental data from a comparative study between these adaptation methods, performed on a two-degrees-of-freedom robot manipulator. Our results show that the prediction error concept is sensitive to unavoidable model uncertainties. We also demonstrate empirically the fast convergence properties of least-squares adaptation relative to gradient approaches. However, in view of the noise sensitivity of the least-squares method, the marginal performance benefits, and the computational burden, we (cautiously) conclude that the tracking-error driven gradient method is preferred for parameter adaptation in robotic applications
