Non-hierarchical emergent structure: a case study in alternative management

"Most well established organizations beyond a certain size adopt a hierarchical structure and accompanying bureaucracy as a means to organize and coordinate the work of the organization. This case study describes a medium-sized family-run organization in the US, with 600 employees and Dollar 2 billion in sales turnover, which functions without formal management structures or titles. Data collected through personal observation and interviews reveal emergent structures, partly in response to the alternative management approach. The paper describes these alternative management methods, the advantages and disadvantages, as well as the conditions that make this approach possible. The paper concludes by discussing the transferability and suitability of these methods to organizations in general." (author's abstract

A Case Study of BIM Application in a Public Construction Project Management Unit in Vietnam: Lessons Learned and Organizational Changes

    Get PDF
Public construction projects in Vietnam are managed by project management units (PMUs). A PMU should consist of the board of directors, a project office, functional and project executive departments. Functional departments are in charge of investor’s responsibilities, while project executive departments are in charge of project execution. This paper discusses the practice of BIM adoption in a case study of a PMU (SPMB) in a public project. Lessons learned include the fact that, while BIM could provide certain benefits to the project, it also extended the project's duration and increased project costs. The SPMB, previously departmentalized by project phases, has changed its organizational structure by establishing a task group made up of professionals from various project executive departments, leading directly by the SPMB leaders, to address BIM issues, though only some basic uses of BIM have been applied. The functions of the project executive departments have also been adjusted due to the application of a new procurement form and the emergence of new processes, and the requirements for a new type of capability (BIM). Subsequently, other elements of the organizational design have been changed accordingly. The lessons learned contribute to the current understanding that PMUs need substantially organizational restructuring for BIM implementation effectively and efficiently while also well-prepared for negative impacts

Activated June 1,1998, Space and Missile Systems Center Detachment 11, located in Colorado Springs, integrates system support management for the Satellite Launch Control System (SLCS), MlLSTAR, the Defense Meteorological Support Program (DMSP), the Space Based Infrared System (SBlRSl, and the Global Positioning System (GPS). The Detachment performs operational software maintenance, satellite systems engineering, space testing and evaluation, and technology master planning. Contemporary management theory asserts that the appropriate match of strategy and structure determines an organization\u27s level of performance. The Detachment is currently organized programmatically. The current programmatic organizational structure represents the physical manifestation of the Integrated Weapon System Management (lWSMl strategy and facilitates the vertical integration of all processes necessary to field, deploy, and maintain weapon/space systems. The rigid implementation of this strategy and the resulting structure impedes horizontal integration of similar processes and equipment across the various programs. However, the charter of the Detachment is to provide central integrated support for space systems capitalizing on opportunities for horizontal integration. This study finds that the macro-strategy of Air Force Materiel Command may create friction with the Detachment\u27s micro-strategy of providing central integrated support for space systems

This study examined the influence of organizational structure on the quality of computerized accounting systems among small and medium enterprises in Nigeria. The method employed in the research was the survey methodology with the use of self-completed questionnaires administered to accounting/finance personnel, each from the sample of 370 firms selected from the population of 9,276 SMEs within the south-south region of Nigeria. The research data was analyzed using frequencies and the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation that was subjected to a t-transformation test. The results of the study indicate that there is a positive relationship between organizational structure and the quality of computerized accounting systems among SMEs, and that, overall, organizational structure has a positive influence on the quality of computerized accounting systems. This result implies that the form of organizational structure practiced by firms play significant role in determining the quality of their computerized accounting systems. Those managing SMEs as well as other practitioners and scholars would find the results of this study useful. The researcher has also suggested areas for further research that would help revalidate or extend the outcome of this study. Today's libraries need to be combined with technology that can simplify the tasks of librarians who are in charge of managing and serving newcomers. Because the librarian profession is less desirable. The purpose of the design to be designed is to make the librarian profession more attractive to the public. By simplifying the task of a librarian in managing the library, both the recording section and the service to the library. The method used in this study combines conventional methods with existing technology, such as creating a data processing system for outgoing and incoming books, then creating a website so that users can easily get reminders to return books from the library via email or phone number. This system has advantages in terms of book data management which is faster and easier because the data collection uses a system that has been prepared. From the user side, it is also easier to find books, borrow books and return books with the system that has been prepared. The concept of this system is to combine conventional library management systems with existing technology. In the end, this information system can help libraries to facilitate library management. In addition, it can also open and increase public interest in the librarian profession

    Get PDF
Community colleges are purported to be in the midst of a leadership crisis due to the impending retirements of chief executive officers (CEOs) and senior administrators over the next several years. Concurrently, the demands upon CEOs to effectively and efficiently manage their institutions are more critical now in an effort to balance the demands placed upon them by public policy and institutional stakeholders. The purpose of this research was to examine the influence of institutional context, governance and organizational structures, on the frequency with which CEOs utilized certain management skills. The study population was community college CEOs as identified by membership in the American Association of Community Colleges. Levels of each independent factor were identified though literature review and constituted a myriad of organizational and governance structures indicative of community colleges across the nation. Twenty-five management skills performed by CEOs were also identified through literature review, and, as the dependent factors, were measured on an anchored six-point rating scale. Comparative analysis on responses (n = 468) to the author-developed questionnaire was performed using multivariate analysis of variance at p \u3c .05. Significant differences sufficient to address the research questions were not found. Ancillary analysis of respondents’ comments suggests context, as defined by this study’s variables, does have influence on the management skills used by CEOs

The Quad-Core Model of Information Systems Innovation: Identifying and Confirming the Role of Novel Technological Frames as a Supra-Innovation Core--The Case of Internet Induced IT Innovation

    Get PDF
The paper extends Swansonís three core model of IT innovation in order to account for observed radical changes in systems development and IS service due to Internet induced innovations. A new supra-core called the base IT innovation core is suggested that accounts for IS innovations in the new world of development which cannot be categorized in the existing tri-core model. The impact and role of this core is supported by findings from a field study, which examined eight leading edge software firms and changes in their development practices. Concurrently, the study confirms the 20 propositions put forward in Lyytinen et al. (1998) that predicted the Internet and its associated tools would represent a new technological frame that would radically change systems development and services
