    The Impact of Sleep Restriction (Nap Deprivation) On Preschool Children\u27s (Aged 3-5) Emotional Response

    This study examined the effect of nap restriction on 3- to 5-year-old habitually napping childrenā€™s emotional responding. It was predicted that the intensity of emotional stimuli would moderate the relationship between nap restriction and the magnitude of emotional responding. Specifically, following nap restriction, the emotional responses to stronger stimuli would be amplified, while the emotional responses to weaker stimuli would be reduced. Emotional stimuli, were classified into four categories: strong negative, weak negative, weak positive, and strong positive. Facial electromyography was measured to reflect preschoolersā€™ emotional responses. The results indicated emotional responses to both strong negative and positive stimuli were amplified following nap deprivation. Planned analyses revealed no differences in emotional responses to weak stimuli with exploratory analyses suggesting actual amplification with nap deprivation.     The advances in sensor technology over recent years has provided new ways for researchers to monitor the elderly in uncontrolled environments. Sensors have become smaller, cheaper and can be worn on the body, potentially creating a network of sensors. Smart phones are also more common in the average household and can also provide some behavioural analysis due to the built in sensors. As a result of this, researchers are able to monitor behaviours in a more natural setting, which can lead to more useful data. This is important for those that may be suffering from mental illness as it allows for continuous, non-invasive monitoring in order to diagnose symptoms from different behaviours. However there are various challenges that need to be addressed ranging from issues with sensors to the involvement of human factors. It is vital that these challenges are taken into consideration along with the major behavioural symptoms that can appear in an Elderly Person. For a person suffering with Dementia, the application of sensor technologies can improve the quality of life of the person and also monitor the progress of the disease through behavioural analysis. This paper will consider the behaviours that can be associated with dementia and how these behaviours can be monitored through sensor technology. We will also provide an insight into some sensors and algorithms gathered through survey in order to provide advantages and disadvantages of these technologies as well as to present any challenges that may face future research

    Development of an anomaly alert system triggered by unusual behaviors at home

    In many countries, the number of elderly people has grown due to the increase in the life expectancy of the population, many of whom currently live alone and are prone to having accidents that they cannot report, especially if they are immobilized. For this reason, we have developed a non-intrusive IoT device, which, through multiple integrated sensors, collects information on habitual user behavior patterns and uses it to generate unusual behavior rules. These rules are used by our SecurHome system to send alert messages to the dependent person's family members or caregivers if their behavior changes abruptly over the course of their daily life. This document describes in detail the design and development of the SecurHome system.SecurHome is a multidisciplinary research project on ageing in the framework of the International Centre on Ageing (CENIE).     The prevalence rate of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is increasing at an alarming rate (1 in 68 children). With this increase comes the need of early diagnosis of ASD, timely intervention, and understanding the conditions that could be comorbid to ASD. Understanding co-morbid anxiety and its interaction with emotion comprehension and production in ASD is a growing and multifaceted area of research. Recognizing and producing contingent emotional expressions is a complex task, which is even more difficult for individuals with ASD. First, I investigate the arousal experienced by adolescents with ASD in a group therapy setting. In this study I identify the instances in which the physiological arousal is experienced by adolescents with ASD ( have-it ), see if the facial expressions of these adolescents indicate their arousal ( show-it ), and determine if the adolescents are self-aware of this arousal or not ( know-it ). In order to establish a relationship across these three components of emotion expression and recognition, a multi-modal approach for data collection is utilized. Machine learning techniques are used to determine whether still video images of facial expressions could be used to predict Electrodermal Activity (EDA) data. Implications for the understanding of emotion and social communication difficulties in ASD, as well as future targets for intervention, are discussed. Second, it is hypothesized that a well-designed intervention technique helps in the overall development of children with ASD by improving their level of functioning. I designed and validated a mobile-based intervention designed for teaching social skills to children with ASD. I also evaluated the social skill intervention. Last, I present the research goals behind an mHealth-based screening tool for early diagnosis of ASD in toddlers. The design purpose of this tool is to help people from low-income group, who have limited access to resources. This goal is achieved without burdening the physicians, their staff, and the insurance companies

    Development of a Fall Risk Asessment Tool Using Gait Analysis

    In the United States, falls are one of the leading causes of fatal and non-fatal injuries for people of all ages. Current clinical methods to assess fall risk are impractical, and often do not use individualsā€™ actual performance. With current technological advances, and the Internet of Things (IoT), the tools are available to create a digital system that can take into account an individualā€™s actual performance in making a fall risk assessment. A digital insole based sensory computing system can collect and analyze human gait patterns to develop a fall risk assessment platform with great accuracy.The presented research considers current clinical methods and describes a computerized self-service platform that successfully addresses different gait variables and metrics critical to accurate fall risk assessment. The system incorporates a shoe insole with pressure sensors, and an accelerometer. Collected foot data are transferred to an analytics visualization platform. A wide range of gait pattern recognition metrics, and gait data analyses features are then displayed on the platform enabling specific fall risk assessment
