The imperfect hiding : some introductory concepts and preliminary issues on modularity
In this work we present a critical assessment of some problems and open questions on the debated notion of modularity. Modularity is greatly in fashion nowadays, being often proposed as the new approach to complex artefact production that enables to combine fast innovation pace, enhanced product variety and reduced need for co-ordination. In line with recent critical assessments of the managerial literature on modularity, we sustain that modularity is only one among several arrangements to cope with the complexity inherent in most high-technology artefact production, and by no means the best one. We first discuss relations between modularity and the broader (and much older within economics) notion of division of labour. Then we sustain that a modular approach to labour division aimed at eliminating technological interdependencies between components or phases of a complex production process may have, as a by-product, the creation of other types of interdependencies which may subsequently result in inefficiencies of various types. Hence, the choice of a modular design strategy implies the resolution of various tradeoffs. Depending on how such tradeoffs are solved, different organisational arrangements may be created to cope with âresidualâ interdependencies. Hence, there is no need to postulate a perfect isomorphism, as some recent literature has proposed, between modularity at the product level and modularity at the organisational level
Major Powers and Militarized Conflict
This article attempts to answer the question of why major powers engage in more active foreign policy behaviors than minor powers. It does so by comparing two explanations for the increased conflict propensity of major powers. The first explanation focuses on major powersâ observable capabilities, while the second stresses their different behavior. We incorporate both into an ultimatum model of conflict in which a stateâs cost of conflict consists of both observable and behavioral components. Using data from the period from 1870 to 2001, we empirically illustrate the observable and behavioral differences between major and minor powers. We then utilize a decomposition model to assess the relative significance of the two explanations. The results suggest that most of the difference in conflict propensity between major and minor powers can be attributed to observable differences

Recognition by directed attention to recursively partitioned images
A learning/recognition model (and instantiating program) is described which recursively combines the learning paradigms of conceptual clustering (Michalski, 1980) and learning-from-examples to resolve the ambiguities of real-world recognition. The model is based on neuropsychological and psychological evidence that the visual system is analytic, hierarchical, and composed of a parallel/serial dichotomy (many, see conclusions by Crick, 1984). Emulating the experimental evidence, parallel processes in the model decompose the image into components and cluster the constituents in much the same way as the image processing technique known as moment analysis (Alt, 1962). Serial, attentive mechanisms then reassemble the decompositions by investigating spatial relationships between components. The use of attentive mechanisms extends the moment analysis technique to handle alterations in structure and solves the contention problem created by combining the two learning paradigms. The contention results from a disagreement between the teacher and the model on what constitutes the salient features at the highest level of the symbol. There are four cases ZBT must handle, two of which result from the disagreement with the teacher. The parallel/serial dichotomy represents a vertical/horizontal tradeoff between the invariant and variant features of a domain. The resultant learned hierarchy allows ZBT to recognize structural differences while avoiding problems of exponential growth
What is it like to have a body?
Few questions in psychology are as fundamental or as elusive as the sense of oneâs own body. Despite widespread recognition of the link between body and self, psychology has only recently developed methods for the scientific study of bodily awareness. Experimental manipulations of embodiment in healthy volunteers have allowed important advances in knowledge. Synchronous multisensory inputs from different modalities play a fundamental role in producing âbody ownershipâ, the feeling that my body is âmineâ. Indeed, appropriate multisensory stimulation can induce ownership over external objects, virtual avatars, and even other peopleâs bodies. We argue that bodily experience is not monolithic, but has measurable internal structure and components that can be identified psychometrically and psychophysically, suggesting the apparent phenomenal unity of self-consciousness may be illusory. We further review evidence that the sense of oneâs own body is highly plastic, with representations of body structure and size particularly prone to multisensory influences
Employee Voice, Human Resource Practices, and Quit Rates: Evidence from the Telecommunications Industry
In this paper, we examine the predictors of aggregate quit rates at the establishment level. We draw on strategic human resource and industrial relations theory to identify the sets of employee voice mechanisms and human resource practices that are likely to predict quit rates. With respect to alternative voice mechanisms, we find that union representation significantly predicts lower quit rates after controlling for compensation and a wide range of other human resource practices that may be affected by collective bargaining. Direct participation via offline problem-solving groups and self-directed teams is significantly negatively related to quit rates,but non-union dispute resolution procedures are not. In addition, higher relative wages and internal promotion policies significantly predict lower quit rates, while contingent staffing, electronic monitoring, and variable pay predict significantly higher rates
Linear-Time Algorithms for Geometric Graphs with Sublinearly Many Edge Crossings
We provide linear-time algorithms for geometric graphs with sublinearly many
crossings. That is, we provide algorithms running in O(n) time on connected
geometric graphs having n vertices and k crossings, where k is smaller than n
by an iterated logarithmic factor. Specific problems we study include Voronoi
diagrams and single-source shortest paths. Our algorithms all run in linear
time in the standard comparison-based computational model; hence, we make no
assumptions about the distribution or bit complexities of edge weights, nor do
we utilize unusual bit-level operations on memory words. Instead, our
algorithms are based on a planarization method that "zeroes in" on edge
crossings, together with methods for extending planar separator decompositions
to geometric graphs with sublinearly many crossings. Incidentally, our
planarization algorithm also solves an open computational geometry problem of
Chazelle for triangulating a self-intersecting polygonal chain having n
segments and k crossings in linear time, for the case when k is sublinear in n
