Investigating IoT Middleware Platforms for Smart Application Development
With the growing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the data
generated through these devices is also increasing. By 2030, it is been
predicted that the number of IoT devices will exceed the number of human beings
on earth. This gives rise to the requirement of middleware platform that can
manage IoT devices, intelligently store and process gigantic data generated for
building smart applications such as Smart Cities, Smart Healthcare, Smart
Industry, and others. At present, market is overwhelming with the number of IoT
middleware platforms with specific features. This raises one of the most
serious and least discussed challenge for application developer to choose
suitable platform for their application development. Across the literature,
very little attempt is done in classifying or comparing IoT middleware
platforms for the applications. This paper categorizes IoT platforms into four
categories namely-publicly traded, open source, developer friendly and
end-to-end connectivity. Some of the popular middleware platforms in each
category are investigated based on general IoT architecture. Comparison of IoT
middleware platforms in each category, based on basic, sensing, communication
and application development features is presented. This study can be useful for
IoT application developers to select the most appropriate platform according to
their application requirement
A Model Approach to Cloud Implementation on Public Libraries with a focus on West Bengal, India
The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility of introducing cloud architecture for public library system in areas where library automation is operational on a standalone server. It also proposes a cloud based model library management system to function on an affordable, robust architecture. The paper made an attempt to highlight the present status of library automation and networking among public libraries in West Bengal. It presents functional requirements for a SaaS based (Software as a Service) model. The simulation approach for the model architecture supports the possibility to connect all public libraries across different hierarchical tiers under the public library system of West Bengal. The proposed model will upscale workflow, reduce cost and duplication of work in terms of procurement, cataloguing, classification and creating an union catalogue/ OPAC with the provision of resource sharing. The current study is the first of its kind, proposing a SaaS cloud based model architecture for a huge public library network. It suggests ways to improve public library services and coordination across the network to visually present the holdings of the entire network to the user community via a cost effective infrastructure
Estimating Potential Operational Cost Savings by Migrating On-Premises to Cloud: A Study using Amazon TCO
In order to use Amazon TCO(Total cost of ownership) calculator to compute the company operational cost saving by migrating on-premises, Colocation workloads to the AWS cloud, we started investigating the case studies showing on the AWS web page. Cases are categories by either company type or by solution. Data are gathered from Amazon webpage. The following reports are from TCO calculator to show the IT cost savings based on both qualitative and quantitative methods. By solution, the parameters like Big Data, Data Center Migration, Enterprise Solutions, Financial Services, Healthcare & Life Sciences, Internet of Things, Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence and Web & Mobile Apps are normally considered. By company the parameters like type and size, Enterprises, Startup and Public Sector are considered
