An innovative user-centred support tool for Augmented Reality maintenance systems design: a preliminary study
Augmented Reality (AR) technologies in maintenance are demonstrated to positively impact on techniciansâ work and performance. Current research in this area is mainly focused on solving technical challenges related with AR in industrial environments. Limited attention has been put into the user perception, ergonomics and usability aspects of AR systems design. This paper proposes an innovative user-centred design support tool for AR systems in maintenance contexts. The tool is based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which is a well-established multi-criteria decision-making approach. In this research, AHP is utilised for guiding designers in the evaluation of application-contexts and AR-technologies for selecting the most suitable and effective AR interaction solution. The toolâs validation has been conducted with twelve maintenance-experts in a design workshop using two case studies. The quantitative results obtained in both case studies reveal the applicability of the AHP model, as well as the effectiveness of the design support tool for complex decisions in AR for maintenance. The use of AHP methods for AR design enable experts to deal with complex and contrasting concepts and express a preference among them with a subjective judgement based on their personal understanding of the problem. Getting it Right: Lessons Learned in Applying a Critical Artefact Approach
âCritical artefactsâ, the products of critical design (Dunne 1999), prompt reflection rather than satisfy obvious user needs. The author is developing an instrumental use of critical artefacts as part of a human-centred design process. Earlier work showed the effectiveness of this approach in allowing stakeholders to engage with novel product ideas. This paper describes a project, Living Rooms, developing the approach with a broader group of stakeholders and devising the critical artefacts with other designers. Although providing insights into the design context (Bowen & Chamberlain 2008), this application of the approach was less productive than in earlier projects and suggested factors that could affect its efficacy. Implications for future applications of the approach are noted: the type of contexts it is appropriate for; the characteristics of effective stakeholder participants and the need to educate them in the context and enable them to think imaginatively.
Von Hippelâs âlead usersâ (1986, 1988) could provide a framework for selecting stakeholders likely to engage effectively with critical artefacts. The second part of the paper summarises lead user theory and discusses how the two characteristics of lead users, motivation and capability (Luthje & Herstatt 2004), tend to make them suitable participants for the critical artefact approach. A second project, Digital Mementos, is described â in particular how lead-user-based selection and the above implications have been applied.
The paper concludes by reviewing the progress in developing generalisable methods exploiting the critical artefact approach, noting the need to position the approach within wider design activity and points toward future work relating it to the entire product design process.

Information-theoretic measures of music listening behaviour
We present an information-theoretic approach to the mea-
surement of usersâ music listening behaviour and selection of music features. Existing
ethnographic studies of mu- sic use have guided the design of music retrieval systems however are
typically qualitative and exploratory in nature. We introduce the SPUD dataset, comprising 10, 000
hand- made playlists, with user and audio stream metadata. With this, we illustrate the use of
entropy for analysing music listening behaviour, e.g. identifying when a user changed music
retrieval system. We then develop an approach to identifying music features that reflect usersâ
criteria for playlist curation, rejecting features that are independent of user behaviour. The
dataset and the code used to produce it are made available. The techniques described support a
quantitative yet user-centred approach to the evaluation of music features and retrieval systems,
without assuming objective ground truth labels

An Ontological Basis for Design Methods
This paper presents a view of design methods as process artefacts that can be represented using the function-behaviour-structure (FBS) ontology. This view allows identifying five fundamental approaches to methods: black-box, procedural, artefact-centric, formal and managerial approaches. They all describe method structure but emphasise different aspects of it. Capturing these differences addresses common terminological confusions relating to methods. The paper provides an overview of the use of the fundamental method approaches for different purposes in designing. In addition, the FBS ontology is used for developing a notion of prescriptiveness of design methods as an aggregate construct defined along four dimensions: certainty, granularity, flexibility and authority. The work presented in this paper provides an ontological basis for describing, understanding and managing design methods throughout their life cycle.

This is what I'm doing and why: reflections on a think-aloud study of digital library users' information behaviour
Many user-centred studies of digital libraries include a think-aloud element â where users are asked to verbalise their thoughts, interface actions and sometimes their feelings whilst using digital libraries to help them complete one or more information tasks. These studies are usually conducted with the purpose of identifying usability issues related to the system(s) used or understanding aspects of usersâ information behaviour. However, few of these studies present detailed accounts of how their think-aloud data was collected and analysed or provide detailed reflection on their methodologies. In this paper, we discuss and reflect on the decisions made when planning and conducting a think-aloud study of lawyersâ interactive information behaviour. Our discussion is framed by Blandford et al.âs PRET A Rapporter (âready to reportâ) framework â a framework that can be used to plan, conduct and describe user-centred studies of digital library use from an information work perspective

This paper provides a review of the literature related to the application of domain-specific thesauri in the search and retrieval process. Focusing on studies which adopt a user-centred approach, the review presents a survey of the methodologies and results from empirical studies undertaken on the use of thesauri as sources of term selection for query formulation and expansion during the search process. It summaries the ways in which domain-specific thesauri from different disciplines have been used by various types of users and how these tools aid users in the selection of search terms. The review consists of two main sections covering, firstly studies on thesaurus-aided search term selection and secondly those dealing with query expansion using thesauri. Both sections are illustrated with case studies that have adopted a user-centred approach
