The Importance of Needs Analysis in Materials Development
There is an issue which can be the subject of a further research that is: most learners of EFL do not actually have any needs at all. They are learning English because they have to rather than because they want or need to. This is particularly true of young learners, who are not going to need to communicate in English for many years to come (if at all). In such cases, the teacher is unlikely to be able to create much intrinsic motivation to learn English in general but can create the need in an engaging classroom task in which the students need to find a way of communicating in English in order to successfully complete the task. This can lead to readiness for acquisition provided the students are motivated by the teacher to read extensively as well. Thus, there should be more place for needs analysis because when we do not run the first principle to create and produce better materials, the rest will always be under great doubt. Every new teacher should consider starting their year applying needs analysis in small scales and then decide what the best is for themselves and their learners
A Case Study of Using Online Communities and Virtual Environment in Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) as a Learning and Teaching Tool for Second Language Learners
Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) create large virtual communities. Online gaming shows potential not just for entertaining, but also in education. This research investigates the use of commercial MMORPGs to support second language teaching. MMORPGs offer virtual safe spaces in which students can communicate by using their target second language with global players. Using a mix of ethnography and action research, this study explores the students’ experiences of language learning and performing while playing MMORPGs. The results show that the use of MMORPGs can facilitate language development by offering fun, informal, individualised and secure virtual spaces for students to practise their language with native and other second language speakers
Communication-Aware Computing for Edge Processing
We consider a mobile edge computing problem, in which mobile users offload
their computation tasks to computing nodes (e.g., base stations) at the network
edge. The edge nodes compute the requested functions and communicate the
computed results to the users via wireless links. For this problem, we propose
a Universal Coded Edge Computing (UCEC) scheme for linear functions to
simultaneously minimize the load of computation at the edge nodes, and maximize
the physical-layer communication efficiency towards the mobile users. In the
proposed UCEC scheme, edge nodes create coded inputs of the users, from which
they compute coded output results. Then, the edge nodes utilize the computed
coded results to create communication messages that zero-force all the
interference signals over the air at each user. Specifically, the proposed
scheme is universal since the coded computations performed at the edge nodes
are oblivious of the channel states during the communication process from the

“Phone Home”: Remote Parenting across National Borders – Jamaican Students in North America and the Role of Mobile Communication Devices
This study presents a snapshot of geographically distributed families and how they use information and communication technologies (ICTs). The setting is in the Caribbean nation of Jamaica, and by way of qualitative interviews with eleven parents, the study explores the extent to which Jamaican parents communicate with their adolescents overseas using ICTs. Despite the barriers of distance, the parents were able to maintain strong emotional bonds with their adolescents overseas, and used mobile phones and voice over Internet protocols to enact a virtual co-presence with their children, as well as to maintain existing, and create new family rituals. The study has implications for privacy and boundary management between parents and adolescents, and for the sharing of social and emotional capital across national boundaries
Torus bifurcations of large-scale swarms having range dependent communication delay
Dynamical emergent patterns of swarms are now fairly well established in
nature, and include flocking and rotational states. Recently, there has been
great interest in engineering and physics to create artificial self-propelled
agents that communicate over a network and operate with simple rules, with the
goal of creating emergent self-organizing swarm patterns. In this paper, we
show that when communicating networks have range dependent delays, rotational
states which are typically periodic, undergo a bifurcation and create swarm
dynamics on a torus. The observed bifurcation yields additional frequencies
into the dynamics, which may lead to quasi-periodic behavior of the swarm.Comment: 7 pages 8 figure
Discovering Strategies to Improve Business Value in Outsourcing Projects
This paper deals with the problem of leveraging client business value in a software development outsourcing relationship. We have observed software development projects from two different Dutch IT outsourcing companies and studied the approach they apply in their (successful) projects. The results show that they create a role dedicated to facilitate communication. This arrangement has the potential to put team members in a better position to communicate, facilitating the transfer of information supporting the rationale behind design decisions. Teams are thus better equipped to anticipate change and to react faster in solving everyday problems. This paper describes our observations and the practical implications we expect, such as the improvement of re-buy intention on the client's side
