    String graphs and separators

String graphs, that is, intersection graphs of curves in the plane, have been studied since the 1960s. We provide an expository presentation of several results, including very recent ones: some string graphs require an exponential number of crossings in every string representation; exponential number is always sufficient; string graphs have small separators; and the current best bound on the crossing number of a graph in terms of the pair-crossing number. For the existence of small separators, unwrapping the complete proof include generally useful results on approximate flow-cut dualities.Comment: Expository paper based on course note

Mary wrote this letter to her parents on an unspecified day. Since she used one sheet of Tea House stationery, it is likely that it was written in 1926. Handwritten in black ink, the text covers the front and back of the cream-colored stationery. In this note, Mary mentions that she may have failed two exams and that one of her professors was impressed with her course note book. Transcription: [1] Dear Folks. Flunked Greek & Alg. exams I know but maybe not the courses. I hope not. But here’s some wonderful news. Just came from my 5 minute oral exam and this is what Dr. Mateer said when I finished. “I saw your wonderful note book “ “ Its something to be mighty proud of. That’s [2] a gift. It was not only the best in the classes this year but one of the very best I have ever seen. Your classwork does not measure up to lab work altho your exam was very good. Perhaps I’ll get a B in the course. Heres [sic] hoping. I’m rather excited. That from Dr. Mateer! Whew! Much Love, Bean-https://openworks.wooster.edu/marybehner_papers/1019/thumbnail.jp

The present study reports on a longitudinal research which sought to explore how Facebook on smartphones could be used to replace an institutional learning management system. A review of the literature revealed that very little articles had been published on the incorporation of both technologies in education. A grounded action research method was employed over a period of one and a half year in three French as a foreign language courses. The action research implementation was two-fold as it included the delivery of course notes and the sharing of learner-created documents. Data collection was conducted through online observations and interviews. A systematic grounded theory approach was used during the six cycles of analysis. Findings revealed issues with the implementation which were corrected over time. Overall, students positively responded to the new platform of delivery. A working model describing learning a foreign language with Facebook on smartphones was constructed, and best practices guidelines were identified. These are discussed in the perspectives of mobile assisted language learning, task-based learning, and social networking learning
