Network-Based Classrooms
Computer-mediated communication is an increasingly familiar part of the educational experiences of students from elementary school through graduate school. This is not surprising, because electronic mail, bulletin boards, gopher servers, and other forms of telecommunication offer conveniences and exciting new possibilities for learning. The rapid expansion of the Internet, the availability of low-cost modems and high-speed data lines, and a growing awareness of the educational possibilities are leading to major changes in classrooms. The many ways in which network-based classrooms are used highlights questions about the goals and means of education that are too often pushed aside. By affording new ways of communicating, these classrooms ask us to rethink questions such as: What role should the teacher have in the classroom? How can students support each other???s learning? What kinds of writing should students learn to do? How should we accommodate, or balance, student interests with other curricular concerns? What is needed to make a classroom become a true learning community? In addition to raising these questions, they provide us with new possibilities for answering them.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe

A multi-agent system to support location based group decision making in mobile teams
This paper describes an agent-based approach for developing a location-based asynchronous group decision-support system for
mobile teams. The approach maximises the use of reusable service components (GSCmas â generic service component for
multi-agent systems) as the main interaction mechanism between agents to allow flexible support of a new group-decision
process. The paper describes the architecture of a GSCmas and provides details of how the GSCmas is integrated within a decision
support system. Finally a system (mPower) based on the proposed approach is introduced and applied to a location-based group
decision problem

Adaptive use of task assignment models in team-based mobile business processes
Most mobile business processes are executed under uncertain and dynamic working environments. This makes the traditional centralized approach for the management of mobile tasks inappropriate to respond to the changes in working environment quickly as collecting the changing information from geographically distributed workforces in real time is expensive if not impossible. This raises the need of a distributed approach in the management of mobile tasks. This paper proposes a distributed architecture for team-based coordination support for mobile task management. In this architecture, tasks are managed via peer-to-peer style coordination between team members who have better understanding on the changing working environment than a centralised system. The novelty of the design of the architecture is explained by applying it to a real business process in the UK
The responses of people to virtual humans in an immersive virtual environment
This paper presents an experiment investigating the impact of behavior and responsiveness
on social responses to virtual humans in an immersive virtual environment
(IVE). A number of responses are investigated, including presence, copresence, and
two physiological responsesâheart rate and electrodermal activity (EDA). Our
findings suggest that increasing agentsâ responsiveness even on a simple level can
have a significant impact on certain aspects of peopleâs social responses to humanoid
agents.
Despite being aware that the agents were computer-generated, participants with
higher levels of social anxiety were significantly more likely to avoid âdisturbingâ
them. This suggests that on some level people can respond to virtual humans as
social actors even in the absence of complex interaction.
Responses appear to be shaped both by the agentsâ behaviors and by peopleâs expectations
of the technology. Participants experienced a significantly higher sense of
personal contact when the agents were visually responsive to them, as opposed to
static or simply moving. However, this effect diminished with experienced computer
users. Our preliminary analysis of objective heart-rate data reveals an identical pattern
of responses
A Speaker Diarization System for Studying Peer-Led Team Learning Groups
Peer-led team learning (PLTL) is a model for teaching STEM courses where
small student groups meet periodically to collaboratively discuss coursework.
Automatic analysis of PLTL sessions would help education researchers to get
insight into how learning outcomes are impacted by individual participation,
group behavior, team dynamics, etc.. Towards this, speech and language
technology can help, and speaker diarization technology will lay the foundation
for analysis. In this study, a new corpus is established called CRSS-PLTL, that
contains speech data from 5 PLTL teams over a semester (10 sessions per team
with 5-to-8 participants in each team). In CRSS-PLTL, every participant wears a
LENA device (portable audio recorder) that provides multiple audio recordings
of the event. Our proposed solution is unsupervised and contains a new online
speaker change detection algorithm, termed G 3 algorithm in conjunction with
Hausdorff-distance based clustering to provide improved detection accuracy.
Additionally, we also exploit cross channel information to refine our
diarization hypothesis. The proposed system provides good improvements in
diarization error rate (DER) over the baseline LIUM system. We also present
higher level analysis such as the number of conversational turns taken in a
