Overlaying 5G radio access networks on wavelength division multiplexed optical access networks with carrier distribution
As 5G communication matures, the requirement for advanced radio access networks (RAN) drives the evolution of optical access networks to support these needs. Basic RAN functions, mobile front-haul to the backbone and interconnected front-end remote radio units, must support and enable data rate surges, low-latency applications, RF coordination, etc. Wavelength division multiplexed optical access networks (WDM-OANs) provide sufficient network capacity to support the addition of RAN services, especially in unused portions of WDM. We propose and demonstrate a method for RAN overlay in WDM-OANs that employ distributed carriers. In such systems, the carrier is modulated at the central office for direct-detected downstream digital data services; later the same carrier is remodulated for the uplink. We propose the use of silicon photonics to intercept the downstream and add 5G signals. We examine the distributed-carrier power budget issues in this overlay scenario. The carrier power must be harvested for direct detection of both digital and RoF services, and yet hold in reserve sufficient power for the uplink remodulation of all services. We concentrate on the silicon photonics subsystem at the remote node to add RoF signals. We demonstrate the overlay with a fabricated chip and study strategic allocations of carrier power at the optical network units housing the radio units to support the overlay. After the successful drop and reception of both conventional WDM-OAN and the newly overlaid RoF signals, we demonstrate sufficient carrier power margin for the upstream remodulation
Converged Analog Fiber-Wireless Point-to-Multipoint Architecture for eCPRI 5G Fronthaul Networks
5G New Radio's (NR) spectrum expansion towards higher bands, although critical towards achieving the envisioned 5G capacity requirements, creates the need for installing a very large number of Access Points (APs), which asserts tremendous capital burden on the Mobile Network Operators. Current centralization solutions such as the Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) alleviate partially the costs of densification by moving the majority of radio processing functionalities from the Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) to the central Base Band Unit (BBU), but still require very high-speed Point-to-Point links between the BBU and each RRH mainly due to the digitized Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) that is excessively inefficient for hauling broadband signals. In this article, we present a novel architecture that employs an analog converged Fiber-Wireless scheme in order to create a very spectrally efficient Point-to-Multipoint network capable of interconnecting a large number of APs, while allowing compatibility with mature Ethernet-based low-cost equipment. Preliminary simulation results show very low end-to-end Ethernet packet delay, well below eCPRI's 100 μs mark, even for fiber lengths up to 10 km, indicating the suitability of our solution for employment in 5G NR large-scale fronthaul networks.© 2019 IEEE. Efficient Management of Flexible Functional Splits in 5G Second Phase Networks
The fifth mobile network generation (5G), which offers better data speeds, reduced latency,
and a huge number of network connections, promises to improve the performance of the
cellular network in practically every way available. A portion of the network operations are
deployed in a centralized unit in the 5G radio access network (RAN) partially centralized
design. By centralizing these functions, operational expenses are decreased and coordinating strategies are made possible. To link centralized units (CU) and distributed units (DU),
and the DU to remote radio units (RRU), both the midhaul and fronthaul networks must
have higher capacity. The necessary fronthaul capacity is also influenced by the fluctuating
instantaneous user traffic. Consequently, the 5G RAN must be able to dynamically change
its centralization level to the user traffic to maximize its performance. To try to relieve this
fronthaul capacity it has been considered a more flexible distribution between the base band
unit (BBU) (or CU and DU if enhanced common public radio interface (eCPRI) is considered) and the RRU. It may be challenging to provide high-speed data services in crowded
areas, particularly when there is imperfect coverage or significant interference. Because of
this, the macrocell deployment is insufficient. This problem for outdoor users could be resolved by the introduction of low-power nodes with a limited coverage area. In this context,
this MSc dissertation explores, in an urban micro cell scenario model A (UMi_A) for three
frequency bands (2.6 GHz, 3.5 GHz, and 5.62 GHz), the highest data rate achievable when a
numerology zero is used. For this, it was necessary the implementation of the UMi_A in the
5G-air-simulator. Allowing the determination of the saturation level using the results for the
packet loss ratio (PLR=2%). By assuming Open RAN (O-RAN) and functional splitting, the
performance of two schedulers in terms of quality-of-service (QoS) were also studied. The
QoS-aware modified largest weighted delay first (M-LWDF) scheduler and the QoS-unaware
proportional fair (PF) scheduler. PLR was evaluated for both schedulers, whilst analyzing
the impact of break point distance while changing the frequency band. The costs, revenues,
profit in percentage terms, and other metrics were also estimated for the PF and M-LWDF
schedulers when used video (VID) and video plus best effort (VID+BE), with or without consideration of the functional splits 7.2 and 6, for the three frequency bands. One concluded
that the profit in percentage terms with functional split option 7.2 applied is always slightly
higher than with functional split option 6. It reaches a maximum profit of 366.92% in the
case of the M-LWDF scheduler, and 305.51% in the case of the PF scheduler, at a cell radius
of 0.4 km for the 2.6 GHz frequency band, considering a price of the traffic of 0.0002 €/min.
melhorada, eCPRI, for considerada), e a unidade de rádio remota, RRU.
do UMi_A no 5G - air - simulator.
OpenRAN (O-RAN) e as divisões funcionais (functionalsplitting).
Optimization of 5G Second Phase Heterogeneous Radio Access Networks with Small Cells
Due to the exponential increase in high data-demanding applications and their services per
coverage area, it is becoming challenging for the existing cellular network to handle the massive
sum of users with their demands. It is conceded to network operators that the current
wireless network may not be capable to shelter future traffic demands. To overcome the challenges
the operators are taking interest in efficiently deploying the heterogeneous network.
Currently, 5G is in the commercialization phase. Network evolution with addition of small
cells will develop the existing wireless network with its enriched capabilities and innovative
features. Presently, the 5G global standardization has introduced the 5G New Radio (NR) under
the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). It can support a wide range of frequency
bands (<6 GHz to 100 GHz).
For different trends and verticals, 5G NR encounters, functional splitting and its cost evaluation
are well-thought-out. The aspects of network slicing to the assessment of the business
opportunities and allied standardization endeavours are illustrated. The study explores the
carrier aggregation (Pico cellular) technique for 4G to bring high spectral efficiency with the
support of small cell massification while benefiting from statistical multiplexing gain. One
has been able to obtain values for the goodput considering CA in LTE-Sim (4G), of 40 Mbps
for a cell radius of 500 m and of 29 Mbps for a cell radius of 50 m, which is 3 times higher
than without CA scenario (2.6 GHz plus 3.5 GHz frequency bands).
Heterogeneous networks have been under investigation for many years. Heterogeneous network
can improve users service quality and resource utilization compared to homogeneous
networks. Quality of service can be enhanced by putting the small cells (Femtocells or Picocells)
inside the Microcells or Macrocells coverage area. Deploying indoor Femtocells for 5G
inside the Macro cellular network can reduce the network cost. Some service providers have
started their solutions for indoor users but there are still many challenges to be addressed.
The 5G air-simulator is updated to deploy indoor Femto-cell with proposed assumptions with
uniform distribution. For all the possible combinations of apartments side length and transmitter
power, the maximum number of supported numbers surpassed the number of users
by more than two times compared to papers mentioned in the literature. Within outdoor environments,
this study also proposed small cells optimization by putting the Pico cells within
a Macro cell to obtain low latency and high data rate with the statistical multiplexing gain of
the associated users.
Results are presented 5G NR functional split six and split seven, for three frequency bands
(2.6 GHz, 3.5GHz and 5.62 GHz). Based on the analysis for shorter radius values, the best
is to select the 2.6 GHz to achieve lower PLR and to support a higher number of users, with
better goodput, and higher profit (for cell radius u to 400 m). In 4G, with CA, from the
analysis of the economic trade-off with Picocell, the Enhanced multi-band scheduler EMBS
provide higher revenue, compared to those without CA. It is clearly shown that the profit of
CA is more than 4 times than in the without CA scenario. This means that the slight increase
in the cost of CA gives back more than 4-time profit relatively to the ”without” CA scenario.
eficientes. Atualmente, a 5G está na fase de comercialização. A evolução destas
(3GPP).
uniforme. Para todas as combinações possíveis do comprimento lado do apartamento, o
número máximo de utilizadores suportado ultrapassou o número de utilizadores suportado
(na literatura) em mais de duas vezes. Em ambientes de exterior, propuseram-se pico-células
no interior de macro-células, de forma a obter atraso extremo-a-extremo reduzido e taxa de
transmissão dados elevada, resultante do ganho de multiplexagem estatística associado.
multi-banda EMBS (do inglês, Enhanced Multi-band Scheduler) disponibiliza proveitos superiores
