    Collaborative eResearch in a Social Cloud

    Abstract—Social networks provide a useful basis for enabling collaboration among groups of individuals. This is applicable not only to social communities but also to the scientific community. Already scientists are leveraging social networking concepts in projects to form groups, share information and communicate with their peers. For scientific projects which require large computing resources, one useful aspect of collaboration is the sharing of computing resources among project members. A social network provides an ideal platform to share these resources. This paper introduces a framework for Social Cloud computing with a view towards collaboration and resource sharing within a scientific community. The architecture of a Social Cloud, where individ-uals or institutions contribute the capacity of their computing resources by means of Virtual Machines leased through the social network, is outlined. Members of the Social Cloud can contribute, request, and use Virtual Machines from other members, as well as form Virtual Organizations among groups of members

    Constructing Effective Customer Feedback Systems -- A Design Science Study Leveraging Blockchain Technology

    Organizations have to adjust to changes in the ecosystem, and customer feedback systems (CFS) provide important information to adapt products and services to changing customer preferences. However, current systems are limited to single-dimensional rating scales and are subject to self-selection biases. This work contributes design principles for CFS and implements a CFS that advances current systems by means of contextualized feedback according to specific organizational objectives. It also uses blockchain-based incentives to support CFS use. We apply Design Science Research (DSR) methodology and report on a longitudinal DSR journey considering multiple stakeholder values. We conducted expert interviews, design workshops, demonstrations, and a four-day experiment in an organizational setup, involving 132 customers of a major Swiss library. This validates the identified design principles and the implemented software artifact both qualitatively and quantitatively. Based on this evaluation, the design principles are revisited and conclusions for the construction of successful CFS are drawn. The findings of this work advance the knowledge on the design of CFS and provide a guideline to managers and decision makers for designing effective CFS

    'A selection of minor antiquities': a multi-sited view on collections from excavations in Egypt

    This article draws upon the ‘Artefacts of Excavation’ (2014–17) project, which is investigating the worldwide distribution of finds from British-led excavations in Egypt between 1880 and 1980. The departure point for the present article is the earliest phase of these distributions. The potential for multi-sited ethnographic approaches to illuminate the history and significance of such collections is explored. It is argued that, through such analyses, it is possible to chart shifting tensions in the status of objects as they were collected, circulated and re-evaluated between the field and the museum. The article concludes by suggesting that multi-sited frameworks may also be able to re-animate ‘orphaned’ archaeological collections, some of which could be at risk from commercial sale

    Cultural political economy of competitiveness, competition, and competition policy in Asia

    This article employs cultural political economy to explore, interpret, and explain the articulation of competition, competitiveness, and competition policies in Asia in the current neo-liberal era. It describes how this approach explores social order and change in terms of the interaction between semiosis and structuration in the context of four types of selectivity: structural, agential, discursive, and technological. It then outlines an analytical framework and methodology to apply this approach to the chosen case study. This concerns how these modes of selectivity have operated since the 1997 ‘Asian Crisis’ to produce changes in the policy discourses and practices of the World Bank and its Asian regional agencies with the declared aim of reducing poverty, enhancing competitiveness, and promoting corresponding forms of competition policy. Next it examines how these discourses and practices are assembling a new dispositive around an emerging disciplinary and governmentalized socioeconomic-cum-legal order in the wake of the Doha conjuncture in Asia. The concluding remarks address some tensions and challenges in the making of this competitiveness order in Asia

    [First Paragraph] In May 1979, Aviva Freedman and Ian Pringle hosted an international conference on Learning to Write at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, featuring a concentrated assemblage of eminent scholars as speakers and respondents. Those present sensed immediately that they were part of a momentous and historic event. Janet Emig, who delivered her famous Tacit Tradition speech at the conference, remembered it later as the single most electric professional meeting I ever participated in (Emig 1983, n.p.). Many delegates saw it as the rightful successor to the landmark Dartmouth Conference of 1966, and when Anthony Adams, the closing speaker, suggested it might even eclipse Dartmouth as the most important conference ever held on English education, there was a general murmur of assent (Oster 1979, 24)

    Data Showcases: the Data Journal in a Multimodal World

       As an experiment, the Research Data Journal for the Humanities and Social Sciences (RDJ) has temporarily extended the usual format of the online journal with so-called ‘showcases’, separate web pages containing a quick introduction to a dataset, embedded multimedia, interactive components, and facilities to directly preview and explore the dataset described. The aim was to create a coherent hyper document with content communicated via different media (multimodality) and provide space for new forms of scientific publication such as executable papers (e.g. Jupyter notebooks). This paper discusses the objectives, technical implementations, and the need for innovation in data publishing considering the advanced possibilities of today's digital modes of communication. The data showcases experiment proved to be a useful starting point for an exploration of related developments within and outside the humanities and social sciences. It turns out that small-scale experiments are relatively easy to perform thanks to the easy availability of digital technology. However, real innovation in publishing affects organization and infrastructure and requires the joint effort of publishers, editors, data repositories, and authors. It implies a thorough update of the concept of publication and adaptation of the production process. This paper also pays attention to these obstacles to taking new paths

    Dear Sister Artist: Activating Feminist Art Letters and Ephemera in the Archive

    The 1970s Feminist Art movement continues to serve as fertile ground for contemporary feminist inquiry, knowledge sharing, and art practice. The CalArts Feminist Art Program (1971–1975) played an influential role in this movement and today, traces of the Feminist Art Program reside in the CalArts Institute Archives’ Feminist Art Materials Collection. Through a series of short interrelated archives stories, this paper explores some of the ways in which women responded to and engaged the Collection, especially a series of letters, for feminist projects at CalArts and the Women’s Art Library at Goldsmiths, University of London over the period of one year (2017–2018). The paper contemplates the archive as a conduit and locus for current day feminist identifications, meaning-making, exchange, and resistance and argues that activating and sharing—caring for—the archive’s feminist art histories is a crucial thing to be done: it is feminism-in-action that not only keeps this work on the table but it can also give strength and definition to being a feminist and an artist.
