    Resiliency in process-aware information systems is based on the availability of recovery flows and alternative data for coping with missing data. In this paper, we discuss an approach to process and information modeling to support the specification of recovery flows and alternative data. In particular, we focus on processes using sensor data from different sources. The proposed model can be adopted to specify resiliency levels of information systems, based on event-based and temporal constraints

    International audienceThis paper introduces a new context modeling approach for the business process management field. The proposed approach aims at identifying and formalizing the contextual knowledge relevant to business processes in order to be able to adapt business processes according to the context. This approach has the particularity to be generic and extensible; it can be integrated with many business process modeling approaches. It is based on ontologies and has two layers, i.e. generic layer and specific layer. Throughout the paper we compare the proposed approach with the related work in order to clearly demonstrate why we propose this approach

    The external environment of an organization is characterized by significant changes that occur in the social, economical, political and technological fields. The organization should know this setting and act effectively. A major challenge is how to define significant information in its diverse contexts. In a business process scenario, context could be defined as the minimum set of variables containing all relevant information impacting the design and implementation of a business process. Although there are a few proposals that deal with context associated to business process (Nunes et al. 2009)(Rosemann et al. 2008)(Saidani and Nurcan 2007), they still miss an explicit method that supports the identification of relevant external contexts that impact on specific activities during a business process execution. In this paper we describe a method for supporting the identification and prioritization of variables to be considered in the context of the external environment that impacts process activities execution

Teleological processes have, by nature, a high level of variability. Our position is that the integration of "context-awareness" in that kind of processes increases their intrinsic variability with specific criteria. We propose an indicator typology with an usage process and illustrate it with the MAP intentional process model

    Method for Eliciting and Analyzing Business Processes Based on Storytelling Theory

    In this paper we suggest that storytelling theory can be used to analyze business processes in two behavioral dimensions, model and context, which concern predefined and improvised behavior, respectively. We develop a method to elicit stories about business processes from process participants. By applying the method in two cases, we provide some evidence on what type of analysis can be done and how it can impact the design of business processes. This research contributes with an innovative method to analyze integrated context/model behavior in business processes

    Enabling situational awareness of business processes

    Purpose: The purpose of this research is to explore the ways of integrating situational awareness into business process management for the purpose of realising hyper automated business processes. Such business processes will help improve their customer experiences, enhance the reliability of service delivery and lower the operational cost for a more competitive and sustainable business. Design/methodology/approach: Ontology has been deployed to establish the context modelling method, and the event handling mechanisms are developed on the basis of event calculus. An approach on performance of the proposed approach has been evaluation by checking the cost savings from the simulation of a large number of business processes. Findings: In this research, the authors have formalised the context presentation for a business process with a focus on rules and entities to support context perception; proposed a system architecture to illustrate the structure and constitution of a supporting system for intelligent and situation aware business process management; developed real-time event elicitation and interpretation mechanisms to operationalise the perception of contextual dynamics and real-time responses; and evaluated the applicability of the proposed approaches and the performance improvement to business processes. Originality/value: This paper presents a framework covering process context modelling, system architecture and real-time event handling mechanisms to support situational awareness of business processes. The reported research is based on our previous work on radio frequency identification-enabled applications and context-aware business process management with substantial extension to process context modelling and process simulation. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited

    Context-aware Process Design: Exploring the Extrinsic Drivers for Process Flexibility

    Research on process flexibility has traditionally explored alternative ways of considering flexibility during the design of a business process. The focus typically has been on ways of how the demand for process flexibility can be satisfied by advanced process modeling techniques, i.e., issues intrinsic to the process. This paper proposes to extent current research by studying the extrinsic drivers for flexibility. These drivers can be found in the context of the process, which may include among others time, location, legislation, culture, performance requirements etc. Exemplary scenarios for such extrinsic flexibility drivers will be discussed and preliminary thoughts on context-aware process design approaches will be shared. The paper ends with a proposed research agenda in this area
