Model-Observation Comparison Study of Multiple Polar Cap Arcs

    Get PDF
A quantitative model-observation comparison of multiple polar cap arcs has been conducted by using a time-dependent theoretical model of polar cap arcs. In particular, the electrodynamical features of multiple polar cap arcs with various spacings are simulated and the results are compared with the images obtained from the All-Sky Intensified Photometer at Qaanaaq. The results show that the observed and simulated arcs are quite similar, both spatially and temporally. The results support the theory proposed by Zhu et al. [1993a, 1994b] that the structure of polar cap arcs is mainly determined by the magnetosphere-ionosphere (M-I) coupling processes and that the spacing of multiple polar cap arcs is closely related to the hardness of the primary magnetospheric precipitation. It is found that for the multiple polar cap arcs with both narrow and wide spacings, the associated field-aligned currents are mainly closed by Pedersen currents. It is also found that a hard precipitation can lead to a highly structured secondary arc because of the nonlinear M-I coupling processes

    Limb-Brightened Jet of 3C 84 Revealed by the 43-GHz Very-Long-Baseline-Array Observation

We present a study of sub-pc scale radio structure of the radio galaxy 3C 84/NGC 1275 based on the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) data at 43 GHz. We discover a limb-brightening in the "restarted" jet associated with the 2005 radio outburst. In the 1990s, the jet structure was ridge-brightening rather than limb-brightening, despite the observations being done with similar angular resolution. This indicates that the transverse jet structure has changed recently. This change in the morphology shows an interesting agreement with the Îł\gamma-ray flux increase, i.e., the Îł\gamma-ray flux in 1990s was at least seven times lower than the current one. One plausible explanation for the limb-brightening is the velocity structure of the jet in the context of the stratified jet, which is a successful scenario to explain the Îł\gamma-ray emission in some active galactic nuclei (AGNs). If this is the case, the change in apparent transverse structure might be caused by the change in the transverse velocity structure. We argue the possibility that the transition from ridge-brightening to limb-brightening is related to the Îł\gamma-ray time variability on the timescale of decades. We also discuss the collimation profile of the jet.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for Publication in Ap

    The Invariant Unscented Kalman Filter

International audienceThis article proposes a novel approach for nonlinear state estimation. It combines both invariant observers theory and unscented filtering principles whitout requiring any compatibility condition such as proposed in the -IUKF algorithm. The resulting algorithm, named IUKF (Invariant Unscented Kalman Filter), relies on a geometrical-based constructive method for designing filters dedicated to nonlinear state estimation problems while preserving the physical invariances and systems symmetries. Within an invariant framework, this algorithm suggests a systematic approach to determine all the symmetry- preserving terms without requiring any linearization and highlighting remarkable invariant properties. As a result, the estimated covariance matrices of the IUKF converge to quasi-constant values due to the symmetry-preserving property provided by the invariant framework. This result enables the development of less conservative robust control strategies. The designed IUKF method has been successfully applied to some relevant practical problems such as the estimation of attitude for aerial vehicles using low-cost sensors reference systems. Typical experimental results using a Parrot quadrotor are provided in this pape

Can the Capability Approach be Evaluated within the Frame of Mainstream Economics? A Methodological Analysis

The aim of this article is to examine the capability approach of Amartya Sen and mainstream economic theory in terms of their epistemological, methodological and philosophical/cultural aspects. The reason for undertaking this analysis is the belief that Sen’s capability approach, contrary to some economists’ claim, is uncongenial to mainstream economic views on epistemology and methodology (not on ontologically). However, while some social scientists regard that Sen, on the whole, is a mainstream economist, his own approach strongly criticizes both the theory and practice of mainstream economics.Amartya Sen, Mainstream economics, Methodological individualism.
