    Multi-Objective Optimization of Planetary Gearbox with Adaptive Hybrid Particle Swarm Differential Evolution Algorithm

    This paper considers the problem of constrained multi-objective non-linear optimization of planetary gearbox based on hybrid metaheuristic algorithm. Optimal design of planetary gear trains requires simultaneous minimization of multiple conflicting objectives, such as gearbox volume, center distance, contact ratio, power loss, etc. In this regard, the theoretical formulation and numerical procedure for the calculation of the planetary gearbox power efficiency has been developed. To successfully solve the stated constrained multi-objective optimization problem, in this paper a hybrid algorithm between particle swarm optimization and differential evolution algorithms has been proposed and applied to considered problem. Here, the mutation operators from the differential evolution algorithm have been incorporated into the velocity update equation of the particle swarm optimization algorithm, with the adaptive population spacing parameter employed to select the appropriate mutation operator for the current optimization condition. It has been shown that the proposed algorithm successfully obtains the solutions of the non-convex Pareto set, and reveals key insights in reducing the weight, improving efficiency and preventing premature failure of gears. Compared to other well-known algorithms, the numerical simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm shows improved optimization performance in terms of the quality of the obtained Pareto solutions

    A hybrid Particle Swarm Evolutionary Algorithm for Constrained Multi-Objective Optimization

    In this paper, a hybrid particle swarm evolutionary algorithm is proposed for solving constrained multi-objective optimization. Firstly, in order to keep some particles with smaller constraint violations, a threshold value is designed, the updating strategy of particles is revised based on the threshold value; then in order to keep some particles with smaller rank values, an infeasible elitist preservation strategy is proposed in order to make the infeasible elitists act as bridges connecting disconnected feasible regions. Secondly, in order to find a set of diverse and well-distributed Pareto-optimal solutions, a new crowding distance function is designed for bi-objective optimization problems. It can assign larger crowding distance function values not only for the particles located in the sparse region but also for the particles located near to the boundary of the Pareto front. In this step, the reference points are given, and the particles which are near to the reference points are kept no matter how crowded these points are. Thirdly, a new mutation operator with two phases is proposed. In the first phase, the total force is computed first, then it is used as a mutation direction, searching along this direction, better particles will be found. The comparative study shows the proposed algorithm can generate widely spread and uniformly distributed solutions on the entire Pareto front

    Application of Multi-Objective Evolutionary Optimization Algorithms to Reactive Power Planning Problem

    This paper presents a new approach to treat reactive power (VAr) planning problem using multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. Specifically, Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA) and Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) approaches have been developed and successfully applied. The overall problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained multi-objective optimization problem. Minimizing the total incurred cost and maximizing the amount of Available Transfer Capability (ATC) are defined as the main objective functions. The proposed approaches have been successfully tested on IEEE 14 bus system. As a result a wide set of optimal solutions known as Pareto set is obtained and encouraging results show the superiority of the proposed approaches and confirm their potential to solve such a large scale multi-objective optimization problem

    The Particle Swarm Optimization Toolbox is a library of evolutionary optimization tools developed in the MATLAB environment. The algorithms contained in the library include a genetic algorithm (GA), a single-objective particle swarm optimizer (SOPSO), and a multi-objective particle swarm optimizer (MOPSO). Development focused on both the SOPSO and MOPSO. A GA was included mainly for comparison purposes, and the particle swarm optimizers appeared to perform better for a wide variety of optimization problems. All algorithms are capable of performing unconstrained and constrained optimization. The particle swarm optimizers are capable of performing single and multi-objective optimization. The SOPSO and MOPSO algorithms are based on swarming theory and bird-flocking patterns to search the trade space for the optimal solution or optimal trade in competing objectives. The MOPSO generates Pareto fronts for objectives that are in competition. A GA, based on Darwin evolutionary theory, is also included in the library. The GA consists of individuals that form a population in the design space. The population mates to form offspring at new locations in the design space. These offspring contain traits from both of the parents. The algorithm is based on this combination of traits from parents to hopefully provide an improved solution than either of the original parents. As the algorithm progresses, individuals that hold these optimal traits will emerge as the optimal solutions. Due to the generic design of all optimization algorithms, each algorithm interfaces with a user-supplied objective function. This function serves as a "black-box" to the optimizers in which the only purpose of this function is to evaluate solutions provided by the optimizers. Hence, the user-supplied function can be numerical simulations, analytical functions, etc., since the specific detail of this function is of no concern to the optimizer. These algorithms were originally developed to support entry trajectory and guidance design for the Mars Science Laboratory mission but may be applied to any optimization problem

    Hybridization of multi-objective deterministic particle swarm with derivative-free local searches

    The paper presents a multi-objective derivative-free and deterministic global/local hybrid algorithm for the efficient and effective solution of simulation-based design optimization (SBDO) problems. The objective is to show how the hybridization of two multi-objective derivative-free global and local algorithms achieves better performance than the separate use of the two algorithms in solving specific SBDO problems for hull-form design. The proposed method belongs to the class of memetic algorithms, where the global exploration capability of multi-objective deterministic particle swarm optimization is enriched by exploiting the local search accuracy of a derivative-free multi-objective line-search method. To the authors best knowledge, studies are still limited on memetic, multi-objective, deterministic, derivative-free, and evolutionary algorithms for an effective and efficient solution of SBDO for hull-form design. The proposed formulation manages global and local searches based on the hypervolume metric. The hybridization scheme uses two parameters to control the local search activation and the number of function calls used by the local algorithm. The most promising values of these parameters were identified using forty analytical tests representative of the SBDO problem of interest. The resulting hybrid algorithm was finally applied to two SBDO problems for hull-form design. For both analytical tests and SBDO problems, the hybrid method achieves better performance than its global and local counterparts
