    The purpose of this book is to provide a broadbased understanding of the rapidly changing environment of campus telecommunications. The anticipated audience for this material is the non-technical university administrator who may not have direct responsibility for telecommunications, but has a need to understand the general environment in which his telecommunications manager functions and the basic concepts of the technology. Five topic areas were selected that best cover the preponderance of issues. No attempt has been made to associate or closely coordinate materials from one chapter\u27s subject to that of any other.     The digital voice/data PBX is finally reaching its anticipated potential and becoming a major factor when considering the total communications picture for many businesses today. The digital PBX has always been the choice for voice communications but has lagged behind the LAN industry when it comes to data transfers. The pendulum has begun to swing with the enhanced data capabilities of third and fourth generation PBXs. The battle for the total communication market is quite fierce between the LAN and PBX vendors now. This research thesis looks at the history, evolution, and architecture of voice/data PBXs. It traces development of PBXs through the present fourth generation architectures. From the first manual switches introduced in the late 1800\u27s through the Strowger switch, step-by-step switching, stored program control, common control, digital switches, dual bus architectures, and finally what is anticipated in the future. A detailed description of the new fourth generation dual bus architectures is presented. Lastly, speculations on the future direction PBX architectures will take is explored.     Revolutions often start well before the first shots are fired. Deep social trends develop over time, waiting for some precipitating event, a new set of leaders, or a technology that allows organizations to behave differently. The precipitating event usually catches our attention, or seems surprising --- but the direction of the revolution is typically evident well beforehand, This manuscript is about converging trends in three major industries , autos, information technologies, and 'media' (including advertising and the broader media) trends that almost certainly presage a revolution in "market facing" systems that link these industries to their markets, and to each other. Each industry has created revolutions in the past, and has demonstrated the 'early warning' phenomenon. The first 'auto-mobiles' were invented about a century before the Ford and Daimlers commonly thought to be the early prototypes of today's cars. Early steam engines on oxcarts really started the revolution that seemed to take off with the Ford assembly line decades later. "Computers" were invented decades ago. And while they were 'revolutionary' in the 1940?s and 1950?s, those developments were merely early hints at the significant upheaval we now experience In computation and communications industries. The broadcast industries, seeded in the last half of the 1800?s through telegraphy and telephony, have revolutionized the way the modem world communicates, develops culture, and conducts commerce. Advertising bonds the media industry to the broadcast media industries. While it is impossible to predict the future, it is possible --- when one steps back from the daily battle for the bottom line --- to reflect on social trends that are waiting for precipitating events. Then, when Precipitating events really do happen; it is easier to understand at least the basic directions the revolution will take.     The Norman Y. Mineta International Institute for Surface Transportation Policy Studies (IISTPS) at San José State University (SJSU) conducted this project to review the continuing development of the Internet and the Information Superhighway. Emphasis was placed on an examination of the impact on commuting and working patterns in California, and an analysis of how public transportation agencies, including Caltrans, might take advantage of the new communications technologies. The document reviews the technology underlying the current Internet “structure” and examines anticipated developments. It is important to note that much of the research for this limited-scope project was conducted during 1995, and the topic is so rapidly evolving that some information is almost automatically “dated.” The report also examines how transportation agencies are basically similar in structure and function to other business entities, and how they can continue to utilize the emerging technologies to improve internal and external communications. As part of a detailed discussion of specific transportation agency functions, it is noted that the concept of a “Roundtable Forum,” growing out of developments in Concurrent Engineering, can provide an opportunity for representatives from multiple jurisdictions to utilize the Internet for more coordinated decision-making. The report also included an extensive analysis of demographic trends in California in recent years, such as commute and recreational activities, and identifies how the emerging technologies may impact future changes

    Presented at SCADA and related technologies for irrigation district modernization, II: a USCID water management conference held on June 6-9, 2007 in Denver, Colorado.SCADA systems in irrigation districts have focused on remote monitoring and remote control. In many districts, the remote control is manual, but in others the automation of structures is enabled through the usage of distributed control for the automation of individual structures. This paper presents the concept of an expanded, "umbrella" SCADA system that will perform the standard functions of remote control and remote monitoring, and will also incorporate information flow in the field for operators. The umbrella SCADA system will mesh the equipment-equipment information into an equipment-program-personnel network
