Computational network design from functional specifications
Connectivity and layout of underlying networks largely determine agent behavior and usage in many environments. For example, transportation networks determine the flow of traffic in a neighborhood, whereas building floorplans determine the flow of people in a workspace. Designing such networks from scratch is challenging as even local network changes can have large global effects. We investigate how to computationally create networks starting from only high-level functional specifications. Such specifications can be in the form of network density, travel time versus network length, traffic type, destination location, etc. We propose an integer programming-based approach that guarantees that the resultant networks are valid by fulfilling all the specified hard constraints and that they score favorably in terms of the objective function. We evaluate our algorithm in two different design settings, street layout and floorplans to demonstrate that diverse networks can emerge purely from high-level functional specifications
Experiences in Multi-domain Management Service Development
The developers of management systems and the management services that operate over them will be faced with increasing complexity as services are developed for the open service market. This paper presents experiences in the development of management services that span several administrative domains and which are therefore representative of the complexities of the open service market. The work described involved the development of TMN based management systems that provided management services in support of multimedia teleservices operating over broadband networks
An Adaptive Design Methodology for Reduction of Product Development Risk
Embedded systems interaction with environment inherently complicates
understanding of requirements and their correct implementation. However,
product uncertainty is highest during early stages of development. Design
verification is an essential step in the development of any system, especially
for Embedded System. This paper introduces a novel adaptive design methodology,
which incorporates step-wise prototyping and verification. With each adaptive
step product-realization level is enhanced while decreasing the level of
product uncertainty, thereby reducing the overall costs. The back-bone of this
frame-work is the development of Domain Specific Operational (DOP) Model and
the associated Verification Instrumentation for Test and Evaluation, developed
based on the DOP model. Together they generate functionally valid test-sequence
for carrying out prototype evaluation. With the help of a case study 'Multimode
Detection Subsystem' the application of this method is sketched. The design
methodologies can be compared by defining and computing a generic performance
criterion like Average design-cycle Risk. For the case study, by computing
Average design-cycle Risk, it is shown that the adaptive method reduces the
product development risk for a small increase in the total design cycle time.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figure
Developing reproducible and comprehensible computational models
Quantitative predictions for complex scientific theories are often obtained by running simulations on computational models. In order for a theory to meet with wide-spread acceptance, it is important that the model be reproducible and comprehensible by independent researchers. However, the complexity of computational models can make the task of replication all but impossible. Previous authors have suggested that computer models should be developed using high-level specification languages or large amounts of documentation. We argue that neither suggestion is sufficient, as each deals with the prescriptive definition of the model, and does not aid in generalising the use of the model to
new contexts. Instead, we argue that a computational model should be released as three components: (a) a well-documented implementation; (b) a set of tests illustrating each of the key processes within the model; and (c) a set of canonical results, for reproducing the model’s predictions in important experiments. The included tests and experiments would provide the concrete exemplars required for easier comprehension of the model, as well as a confirmation that independent implementations and
later versions reproduce the theory’s canonical results

According to the IST/ FET proactive initiative on GLOBAL COMPUTING, the goal is to obtain techniques (models, frameworks, methods, algorithms) for constructing systems that are flexible, dependable, secure, robust and efficient.
The dominant concerns are not those of representing and manipulating data efficiently but rather those of handling the co-ordination and interaction, security, reliability, robustness, failure modes, and control of risk of the entities in the system and the overall design, description and performance of the system itself.
Completely different paradigms of computer science may have to be developed to tackle these issues effectively. The research should concentrate on systems having the following characteristics: • The systems are composed of autonomous computational entities where activity is not centrally controlled, either because global control is impossible or impractical, or because the entities are created or controlled by different owners.
• The computational entities are mobile, due to the movement of the physical platforms or by movement of the entity from one platform to another.
• The configuration varies over time. For instance, the system is open to the introduction of new computational entities and likewise their deletion.
The behaviour of the entities may vary over time.
• The systems operate with incomplete information about the environment.
For instance, information becomes rapidly out of date and mobility requires information about the environment to be discovered.
The ultimate goal of the research action is to provide a solid scientific foundation for the design of such systems, and to lay the groundwork for achieving effective principles for building and analysing such systems.
This workshop covers the aspects related to languages and programming environments as well as analysis of systems and resources involving 9 projects (AGILE , DART, DEGAS , MIKADO, MRG, MYTHS, PEPITO, PROFUNDIS, SECURE) out of the 13 founded under the initiative. After an year from the start of the projects, the goal of the workshop is to fix the state of the art on the topics covered by the two clusters related to programming environments and analysis of systems as well as to devise strategies and new ideas to profitably continue the research effort towards the overall objective of the initiative.

A Combinatorial Parametric Engineering Model for Solid Freeform Fabrication
Fabricated parts are often represented as compact connected smooth 3-manifolds with
boundary, where the boundaries consist of compact smooth 2-manifolds. This class of mathematical
structures includes topological spaces with enclosed voids and tunnels. Useful information about these
structures are coded into level functions (Morse functions) which map points in the 3-manifold onto their
height above a fixed plane. By definition, Morse functions are smooth functions, all of whose critical
points are nondegenerate. This information is presented by the Reeb graph construction that develops a
topologically informative skeleton of the manifold whose nodes are the critical points of the Morse function
and whose edges are associated with the connected components between critical slices. This approach
accurately captures the SFF process: using a solid geometric model of the part, defining surface
boundaries; selecting a part orientation; forming planar slices, decomposing the solid into a sequence of
thin cross-sectional polyhedral layers; and then fabricating the part by producing the polyhedra by additive
manufacturing. This note will define a qualitative and combinatorial parametric engineering model of the
SFF part design process. The objects under study will be abstract simplicial complexes K with boundary
∂K. Systems of labeled 2-surfaces in K, called slices, will be associated with the cross-sectional polyhedral
layers. The labeled slices are mapped into a family of digraph automata, which, unlike cellular automata,
are defined not on regular lattices with simple connectivities (cells usually have either 4 or 8 cell
neighborhoods) but on unrestricted digraphs whose connectivities are irregular and more complicated.Mechanical Engineerin
