Data-driven computation of invariant sets of discrete time-invariant black-box systems
We consider the problem of computing the maximal invariant set of
discrete-time black-box nonlinear systems without analytic dynamical models.
Under the assumption that the system is asymptotically stable, the maximal
invariant set coincides with the domain of attraction. A data-driven framework
relying on the observation of trajectories is proposed to compute
almost-invariant sets, which are invariant almost everywhere except a small
subset. Based on these observations, scenario optimization problems are
formulated and solved. We show that probabilistic invariance guarantees on the
almost-invariant sets can be established. To get explicit expressions of such
sets, a set identification procedure is designed with a verification step that
provides inner and outer approximations in a probabilistic sense. The proposed
data-driven framework is illustrated by several numerical examples.Comment: A shorter version with the title "Scenario-based set invariance

Computation of the maximal invariant set of discrete-time linear systems subject to a class of non-convex constraints
We consider the problem of computing the maximal invariant set of
discrete-time linear systems subject to a class of non-convex constraints that
admit quadratic relaxations. These non-convex constraints include semialgebraic
sets and other smooth constraints with Lipschitz gradient. With these quadratic
relaxations, a sufficient condition for set invariance is derived and it can be
formulated as a set of linear matrix inequalities. Based on the sufficient
condition, a new algorithm is presented with finite-time convergence to the
actual maximal invariant set under mild assumptions. This algorithm can be also
extended to switched linear systems and some special nonlinear systems. The
performance of this algorithm is demonstrated on several numerical examples.Comment: Accepted in Automatic
Characteristics, Bicharacteristics, and Geometric Singularities of Solutions of PDEs
Many physical systems are described by partial differential equations (PDEs).
Determinism then requires the Cauchy problem to be well-posed. Even when the
Cauchy problem is well-posed for generic Cauchy data, there may exist
characteristic Cauchy data. Characteristics of PDEs play an important role both
in Mathematics and in Physics. I will review the theory of characteristics and
bicharacteristics of PDEs, with a special emphasis on intrinsic aspects, i.e.,
those aspects which are invariant under general changes of coordinates. After a
basically analytic introduction, I will pass to a modern, geometric point of
view, presenting characteristics within the jet space approach to PDEs. In
particular, I will discuss the relationship between characteristics and
singularities of solutions and observe that: "wave-fronts are characteristic
surfaces and propagate along bicharacteristics". This remark may be understood
as a mathematical formulation of the wave/particle duality in optics and/or
quantum mechanics. The content of the paper reflects the three hour minicourse
that I gave at the XXII International Fall Workshop on Geometry and Physics,

Lie symmetry analysis and exact solutions of the quasi-geostrophic two-layer problem
The quasi-geostrophic two-layer model is of superior interest in dynamic
meteorology since it is one of the easiest ways to study baroclinic processes
in geophysical fluid dynamics. The complete set of point symmetries of the
two-layer equations is determined. An optimal set of one- and two-dimensional
inequivalent subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance algebra is constructed.
On the basis of these subalgebras we exhaustively carry out group-invariant
reduction and compute various classes of exact solutions. Where possible,
reference to the physical meaning of the exact solutions is given. In
particular, the well-known baroclinic Rossby wave solutions in the two-layer
model are rediscovered.Comment: Extended version, 24 pages, 1 figur
