Compressive sensing Petrov-Galerkin approximation of high-dimensional parametric operator equations
We analyze the convergence of compressive sensing based sampling techniques
for the efficient evaluation of functionals of solutions for a class of
high-dimensional, affine-parametric, linear operator equations which depend on
possibly infinitely many parameters. The proposed algorithms are based on
so-called "non-intrusive" sampling of the high-dimensional parameter space,
reminiscent of Monte-Carlo sampling. In contrast to Monte-Carlo, however, a
functional of the parametric solution is then computed via compressive sensing
methods from samples of functionals of the solution. A key ingredient in our
analysis of independent interest consists in a generalization of recent results
on the approximate sparsity of generalized polynomial chaos representations
(gpc) of the parametric solution families, in terms of the gpc series with
respect to tensorized Chebyshev polynomials. In particular, we establish
sufficient conditions on the parametric inputs to the parametric operator
equation such that the Chebyshev coefficients of the gpc expansion are
contained in certain weighted -spaces for . Based on this we
show that reconstructions of the parametric solutions computed from the sampled
problems converge, with high probability, at the , resp.

Wavelet-Fourier CORSING techniques for multi-dimensional advection-diffusion-reaction equations
We present and analyze a novel wavelet-Fourier technique for the numerical
treatment of multidimensional advection-diffusion-reaction equations based on
the CORSING (COmpRessed SolvING) paradigm. Combining the Petrov-Galerkin
technique with the compressed sensing approach, the proposed method is able to
approximate the largest coefficients of the solution with respect to a
biorthogonal wavelet basis. Namely, we assemble a compressed discretization
based on randomized subsampling of the Fourier test space and we employ sparse
recovery techniques to approximate the solution to the PDE. In this paper, we
provide the first rigorous recovery error bounds and effective recipes for the
implementation of the CORSING technique in the multi-dimensional setting. Our
theoretical analysis relies on new estimates for the local a-coherence, which
measures interferences between wavelet and Fourier basis functions with respect
to the metric induced by the PDE operator. The stability and robustness of the
proposed scheme is shown by numerical illustrations in the one-, two-, and
three-dimensional case
Sparse recovery in bounded Riesz systems with applications to numerical methods for PDEs
We study sparse recovery with structured random measurement matrices having
independent, identically distributed, and uniformly bounded rows and with a
nontrivial covariance structure. This class of matrices arises from random
sampling of bounded Riesz systems and generalizes random partial Fourier
matrices. Our main result improves the currently available results for the null
space and restricted isometry properties of such random matrices. The main
novelty of our analysis is a new upper bound for the expectation of the
supremum of a Bernoulli process associated with a restricted isometry constant.
We apply our result to prove new performance guarantees for the CORSING method,
a recently introduced numerical approximation technique for partial
differential equations (PDEs) based on compressive sensing
Sparse approximation of multivariate functions from small datasets via weighted orthogonal matching pursuit
We show the potential of greedy recovery strategies for the sparse
approximation of multivariate functions from a small dataset of pointwise
evaluations by considering an extension of the orthogonal matching pursuit to
the setting of weighted sparsity. The proposed recovery strategy is based on a
formal derivation of the greedy index selection rule. Numerical experiments
show that the proposed weighted orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm is able
to reach accuracy levels similar to those of weighted minimization
programs while considerably improving the computational efficiency for small
values of the sparsity level
A mixed regularization approach for sparse simultaneous approximation of parameterized PDEs
We present and analyze a novel sparse polynomial technique for the
simultaneous approximation of parameterized partial differential equations
(PDEs) with deterministic and stochastic inputs. Our approach treats the
numerical solution as a jointly sparse reconstruction problem through the
reformulation of the standard basis pursuit denoising, where the set of jointly
sparse vectors is infinite. To achieve global reconstruction of sparse
solutions to parameterized elliptic PDEs over both physical and parametric
domains, we combine the standard measurement scheme developed for compressed
sensing in the context of bounded orthonormal systems with a novel mixed-norm
based regularization method that exploits both energy and sparsity. In
addition, we are able to prove that, with minimal sample complexity, error
estimates comparable to the best -term and quasi-optimal approximations are
achievable, while requiring only a priori bounds on polynomial truncation error
with respect to the energy norm. Finally, we perform extensive numerical
experiments on several high-dimensional parameterized elliptic PDE models to
demonstrate the superior recovery properties of the proposed approach.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figure
