The electronics industry in central and eastern Europe: an emerging production location in the alignment of networks perspective
This paper analyses the emergence of central Europe as a new location for the production of electronics. The main factors that drive integration in the region into global production networks are also analysed, as well as prospects for upgrading the industry by using network alignment perspectives.
Foreign investment is the primary vehicle of integration of CEE electronics firms into global production networks, and Hungary has moved furthest along this path, positioning itself as a major low-cost supply base in the region. Czech and Polish electronics industries are connected, in smaller, but increasing, degrees to international electronics production networks. Networks that are being built in CEE in electronics are usually confined to subsidiaries with still limited local subcontracting; they are export-oriented and are expanding.
Local subsidiaries have mastered production capabilities and several subsidiaries in Hungary are European mandate suppliers in their respective lines of business. EU demand is the main pull factor, which gives cohesion to the actions of MNCs as well as to the action of local and national governments in CEE. The layer of local firms is still very weak with very limited capabilities in core technologies. This is the key weakness which prevents further alignment of networks in CEE electronics. Local governments play an important role in working jointly with foreign investors in establishing industrial parks and new capacities

Towards a business model for cellular network and telecommunication operators: a theoretical framework
Cellular networks and telecommunications bring major change to the way businesses are conducted.
Mobility has become one of the main priorities for users and this has impacted on cellular networks and telecommunication operators (CNTOs). However, entrants into the cellular industry have been confounded primarily by inexistent or weak Business Models (BMs). Designing a BM for a CNTO is
complex and requires multiple actors to balance different and often conflicting design requirements. Nevertheless, most research about CNTOs has been technically oriented and has mainly addressed the technological and engineering issues related to their infrastructure. Less attention has been given to
the business model of CNTOs. Hence, there is a need to enhance our ability to determine what
constitutes the optimal and most viable business model to meet the various strategic objectives and
goals for these CNTOs. In this paper an overview of research into the cellular business model and the main issues to be resolved is provided. In particular, the authors propose guidelines as a basis on which to develop a more comprehensive definition which may lead to a consensus. Moreover, a generic model (V4 Model) is proposed for the BM of these companies based on value proposition, value architecture, value network and value finance

A supplier selection strategy within the Malaysian telecommunications industry
The telecommunication industry in Malaysia has grown rapidly over the last 15 years, with effective supply chain management becoming increasing important within the sector. A multitude of providers and part owned Malaysian government companies, vendors and suppliers are involved in generating and creating value-adding products and services within this sector (across wireless, wireline, broadband business and consumer lines of business). This paper describes key challenges facing a major telecoms service provider in Malaysia with regards to drivers involved in the overall procurement and supplier selection with regards to components of performance management, decision-making, selection techniques, quality and cost management, procurement policy and procurement ethics. This paper further focuses on defining and detailing research currently being undertaken to develop a framework for identifying supplier selection drivers that are inherent within the sector and suggests a research approach to investigate and develop strategies for supplier selection for the telecommunications industry in Malaysia
Complex City Systems
Information and communications technology (ICT) is being exploited within cities to enable them to better compete in a global knowledge-based service-led economy. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, cities exploited large technical systems (LTSs) such as the telegraph, telephony, electrical networks, and other technologies to enhance their social and economic
position. This paper examines how the LTS model applies to ICT deployments, including broadband network, municipal wireless,
and related services, and how cities and city planners in the twenty-first century are using or planning to use these technologies.
This paper also examines their motivations and expectations, the contribution to date, and the factors affecting outcomes.
The findings extend the LTS model by proposing an increased role for organizations with respect to an individual agency.
The findings show how organizations form themselves into networks that interact and influence the outcome of the system at the
level of the city. The extension to LTS, in the context of city infrastructure, is referred to as the complex city system framework.
This proposed framework integrates the role of these stakeholder networks, as well as that of the socioeconomic, technical,
and spatial factors within a city, and shows how together they shape the technical system and its socioeconomic contribution. The CCS framework has been presented at Digital Cities Conferences in Eindhoven, Barcelona, Taiwan, London and at IBM’s Global Smart Cities Conference in Shanghai between 2010 and 2012. Its finding are timely in the context of major policy decisions on investments at regional, national and international level on ICT infrastructure and related service transformation, as well as the governance of such projects, their planning and their deployment

How collaborative innovation and co-creation can deliver value: a stakeholder approach
This project explores how collaborative innovation and co-creation between stakeholders
can deliver value for firms. In today’s increasingly competitive and fast-changing global
marketplace, firms must seek to develop more frequent and higher quality innovations
(Ngugi et al, 2010). In addition, customers, employees and other stakeholders are
demanding opportunities to co-create and collaborate with businesses more and more. As
Ramaswamy (2010) comments:
“Providers of products and services are challenged by customers who are increasingly
informed, connected, networked and empowered. Customers, employees and stakeholders
are demanding higher quality interactions and experiences from businesses and a deeper
engagement in the value-creation and service delivery processes” (Ramaswamy, 2010, pp.
22).
Given this increasing need to collaborate, innovate and co-create, firms need a better
understanding of how they can engage in these activities in a way that maximises the value
created for all stakeholders; this project, through exploratory, qualitative research interviews
and a wide-ranging literature review, seeks to make a contribution in this area
ICT for eco-sustainability: an assessment of the capability of the Australian ICT sector
Executive summary
As eco-sustainability issues become increasingly important to most, if not all, Australian organisations, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry is expected to provide solutions that reduce material consumption (dematerialise), emissions (decarbonise), and energy use and waste production (demobilise) in both the ICT infrastructure and the business processes and practices of industries. The term \u27Green ICT\u27 represents this eco- sustainability enabling role of the ICT industry.
The School of Business Information Technology and Logistics, RMIT University in collaboration with the Australian Information Industries Association (AIIA) surveyed all members and affiliates of the AIIA at the beginning of 2010 to understand Australian ICT firms\u27 capability to enhance the eco-sustainability of other industries.
