The Affine Uncertainty Principle, Associated Frames and Applications in Signal Processing

    Get PDF
Uncertainty relations play a prominent role in signal processing, stating that a signal can not be simultaneously concentrated in the two related domains of the corresponding phase space. In particular, a new uncertainty principle for the affine group, which is directly related to the wavelet transform has lead to a new minimizing waveform. In this thesis, a frame construction is proposed which leads to approximately tight frames based on this minimizing waveform. Frame properties such as the diagonality of the frame operator as well as lower and upper frame bounds are analyzed. Additionally, three applications of such frame constructions are introduced: inpainting of missing audio data, detection of neuronal spikes in extracellular recorded data and peak detection in MALDI imaging data

Transforming sustainable business as usual:A tool encouraging businesses to go further

    Get PDF
Through our systems of production and consumption, we have already surpassed several planetary boundaries. Therefore, far-reaching transformations are required to ensure that human activity returns into the limits of planetary carrying capacity. For business, these transformations imply moving beyond the status quo and reorienting business activities by fully integrating environmental and social concerns. Business (model) tools can drive business innovation towards such integrated sustainability. While tools for sustainable value creation and circularity exist, they do not yet stimulate companies to look beyond and are missing a vision towards which businesses should be working. Therefore, we developed a prototype for The Road Ahead, a business tool in the form of a board game that aims to encourage advanced sustainability actions. Based on a diagram showing the hierarchy of Sustainable Business Models, the game takes players through to the next steps, moving from business action on efficiency, over net zero, circularity and sufficiency, towards regeneration and flourishing. The interactive quiz nature of the board game is intended to provide information at the same time as questioning players’ assumptions by showing what more can be done. The tool is developed to be of short duration and combinable with existing tools, to provide a goal post in business innovation sessions to measure current and future sustainability ambitions. In the next steps, will be reviewed and tested to ensure that it meets this objective

Z-Numbers-Based Approach to Hotel Service Quality Assessment

    Get PDF
In this study, we are analyzing the possibility of using Z-numbers for measuring the service quality and decision-making for quality improvement in the hotel industry. Techniques used for these purposes are based on consumer evalu- ations - expectations and perceptions. As a rule, these evaluations are expressed in crisp numbers (Likert scale) or fuzzy estimates. However, descriptions of the respondent opinions based on crisp or fuzzy numbers formalism not in all cases are relevant. The existing methods do not take into account the degree of con- fidence of respondents in their assessments. A fuzzy approach better describes the uncertainties associated with human perceptions and expectations. Linguis- tic values are more acceptable than crisp numbers. To consider the subjective natures of both service quality estimates and confidence degree in them, the two- component Z-numbers Z = (A, B) were used. Z-numbers express more adequately the opinion of consumers. The proposed and computationally efficient approach (Z-SERVQUAL, Z-IPA) allows to determine the quality of services and iden- tify the factors that required improvement and the areas for further development. The suggested method was applied to evaluate the service quality in small and medium-sized hotels in Turkey and Azerbaijan, illustrated by the example

Molecular phylogeny of horseshoe crab using mitochondrial Cox1 gene as a benchmark sequence

An effort to assess the utility of 650 bp Cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (DNA barcode) gene in delineating the members horseshoe crabs (Family: xiphosura) with closely related sister taxa was made. A total of 33 sequences were extracted from National Center for Biotechnological Information (NCBI) which include horseshoe crabs, beetles, common crabs and scorpion sequences. Constructed phylogram showed beetles are closely related with horseshoe crabs than common crabs. Scorpion spp were distantly related to xiphosurans. Phylogram and observed genetic distance (GD) date were also revealed that Limulus polyphemus was closely related with Tachypleus tridentatus than with T.gigas. Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda was distantly related with L.polyphemus. The observed mean Genetic Distance (GD) value was higher in 3rd codon position in all the selected group of organisms. Among the horseshoe crabs high GC content was observed in L.polyphemus (38.32%) and lowest was observed in T.tridentatus (32.35%). We conclude that COI sequencing (barcoding) could be used in identifying and delineating evolutionary relatedness with closely related specie
