Explanation for case-based reasoning via abstract argumentation
Case-based reasoning (CBR) is extensively used in AI in support of several applications, to assess a new situation (or case) by recollecting past situations (or cases) and employing the ones most similar to the new situation to give the assessment. In this paper we study properties of a recently proposed method for CBR, based on instantiated Abstract Argumentation and referred to as AA-CBR, for problems where cases are represented by abstract factors and (positive or negative) outcomes, and an outcome for a new case, represented by abstract factors, needs to be established. In addition, we study properties of explanations in AA-CBR and define a new notion of lean explanations that utilize solely relevant cases. Both forms of explanations can be seen as dialogical processes between a proponent and an opponent, with the burden of proof falling on the proponent
Optimizing the computation of overriding
We introduce optimization techniques for reasoning in DLN---a recently
introduced family of nonmonotonic description logics whose characterizing
features appear well-suited to model the applicative examples naturally arising
in biomedical domains and semantic web access control policies. Such
optimizations are validated experimentally on large KBs with more than 30K
axioms. Speedups exceed 1 order of magnitude. For the first time, response
times compatible with real-time reasoning are obtained with nonmonotonic KBs of
this size
Properties of ABA+ for Non-Monotonic Reasoning
We investigate properties of ABA+, a formalism that extends the well studied
structured argumentation formalism Assumption-Based Argumentation (ABA) with a
preference handling mechanism. In particular, we establish desirable properties
that ABA+ semantics exhibit. These pave way to the satisfaction by ABA+ of some
(arguably) desirable principles of preference handling in argumentation and
nonmonotonic reasoning, as well as non-monotonic inference properties of ABA+
under various semantics.Comment: This is a revised version of the paper presented at the worksho
Independence - revision and defaults
We investigate different aspects of independence here, in the context of
theory revision, generalizing slightly work by Chopra, Parikh, and Rodrigues,
and in the context of preferential reasoning
A Plausibility Semantics for Abstract Argumentation Frameworks
We propose and investigate a simple ranking-measure-based extension semantics
for abstract argumentation frameworks based on their generic instantiation by
default knowledge bases and the ranking construction semantics for default
reasoning. In this context, we consider the path from structured to logical to
shallow semantic instantiations. The resulting well-justified JZ-extension
semantics diverges from more traditional approaches.Comment: Proceedings of the 15th International Workshop on Non-Monotonic
Reasoning (NMR 2014). This is an improved and extended version of the
