CLPGUI: a generic graphical user interface for constraint logic programming over finite domains
CLPGUI is a graphical user interface for visualizing and interacting with
constraint logic programs over finite domains. In CLPGUI, the user can control
the execution of a CLP program through several views of constraints, of finite
domain variables and of the search tree. CLPGUI is intended to be used both for
teaching purposes, and for debugging and improving complex programs of
realworld scale. It is based on a client-server architecture for connecting the
CLP process to a Java-based GUI process. Communication by message passing
provides an open architecture which facilitates the reuse of graphical
components and the porting to different constraint programming systems.
Arbitrary constraints and goals can be posted incrementally from the GUI. We
propose several dynamic 2D and 3D visualizations of the search tree and of the
evolution of finite domain variables. We argue that the 3D representation of
search trees proposed in this paper provides the most appropriate visualization
of large search trees. We describe the current implementation of the
annotations and of the interactive execution model in GNU-Prolog, and report

Exploiting Anonymity in Approximate Linear Programming: Scaling to Large Multiagent MDPs (Extended Version)
Many exact and approximate solution methods for Markov Decision Processes
(MDPs) attempt to exploit structure in the problem and are based on
factorization of the value function. Especially multiagent settings, however,
are known to suffer from an exponential increase in value component sizes as
interactions become denser, meaning that approximation architectures are
restricted in the problem sizes and types they can handle. We present an
approach to mitigate this limitation for certain types of multiagent systems,
exploiting a property that can be thought of as "anonymous influence" in the
factored MDP. Anonymous influence summarizes joint variable effects efficiently
whenever the explicit representation of variable identity in the problem can be
avoided. We show how representational benefits from anonymity translate into
computational efficiencies, both for general variable elimination in a factor
graph but in particular also for the approximate linear programming solution to
factored MDPs. The latter allows to scale linear programming to factored MDPs
that were previously unsolvable. Our results are shown for the control of a
stochastic disease process over a densely connected graph with 50 nodes and 25

Fine-Pruning: Joint Fine-Tuning and Compression of a Convolutional Network with Bayesian Optimization
When approaching a novel visual recognition problem in a specialized image
domain, a common strategy is to start with a pre-trained deep neural network
and fine-tune it to the specialized domain. If the target domain covers a
smaller visual space than the source domain used for pre-training (e.g.
ImageNet), the fine-tuned network is likely to be over-parameterized. However,
applying network pruning as a post-processing step to reduce the memory
requirements has drawbacks: fine-tuning and pruning are performed
independently; pruning parameters are set once and cannot adapt over time; and
the highly parameterized nature of state-of-the-art pruning methods make it
prohibitive to manually search the pruning parameter space for deep networks,
leading to coarse approximations. We propose a principled method for jointly
fine-tuning and compressing a pre-trained convolutional network that overcomes
these limitations. Experiments on two specialized image domains (remote sensing
images and describable textures) demonstrate the validity of the proposed

Analogy Mining for Specific Design Needs
Finding analogical inspirations in distant domains is a powerful way of
solving problems. However, as the number of inspirations that could be matched
and the dimensions on which that matching could occur grow, it becomes
challenging for designers to find inspirations relevant to their needs.
Furthermore, designers are often interested in exploring specific aspects of a
product-- for example, one designer might be interested in improving the
brewing capability of an outdoor coffee maker, while another might wish to
optimize for portability. In this paper we introduce a novel system for
targeting analogical search for specific needs. Specifically, we contribute a
novel analogical search engine for expressing and abstracting specific design
needs that returns more distant yet relevant inspirations than alternate
approaches
