    Cognitive system framework for brain-training exercise based on human-robot interactif

Brain-training exercises, preferably involving also physical activity, have shown their potential to monitor and improve the brain function of people affected by Alzheimer disease (AD) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This paper presents a cognitive robotic system designed to assist mild dementia patients during brain-training sessions of sorting tokens, an exercise inspired by the Syndrom KurzTest neuropsychological test (SKT). The system is able to perceive, learn and adapt to the user’s behaviour and is composed of two main modules. The adaptive module based on representing the human-robot interaction as a planning problem, that can adapt to the user performance offering different encouragement and recommendation actions using both verbal and gesture communication in order to minimize the time spent to solve the exercise. As safety is a very important issue, the cognitive system is enriched with a safety module that monitors the possibility of physical contact and reacts accordingly. The cognitive system is presented as well as its embodiment in a real robot. Simulated experiments are performed to (i) evaluate the adaptability of the system to different patient use-cases and (ii) validate the coherence of the proposed safety module. A real experiment in the lab, with able users, is used as preliminary evaluation to validate the overall approach. Results in laboratory conditions show that the two presented modules effectively provide additional and essential functionalities to the system, although further work is necessary to guarantee robustness and timely response of the robot before testing it with patientsPeer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    La robótica asistencial es un campo en rápido crecimiento destinado a ayudar a los cuidadores en hospitales, centros de rehabilitación y residencias de ancianos, así como a empoderar a las personas con movilidad reducida en el hogar para que puedan vivir de manera autónoma. Este es un ámbito altamente interdisciplinar, que requiere aunar no solo conocimientos de varias áreas tecno-científicas, sino también de ciencias sociales y humanidades. Es crucial que en la concepción, desarrollo y despliegue de los asistentes robóticos participen todos los actores intervinientes en el sector de la asistencia y los cuidados. El co-diseño de la interacción persona-robot es particularmente importante en este contexto, debido a la gran diversidad de condicionantes, tanto tecnológicos como éticos, a que está sujeta.     Conversational affective social robots for ageing and dementia support

    Socially assistive robots (SAR) hold significant potential to assist older adults and people with dementia in human engagement and clinical contexts by supporting mental health and independence at home. While SAR research has recently experienced prolific growth, long-term trust, clinical translation and patient benefit remain immature. Affective human-robot interactions are unresolved and the deployment of robots with conversational abilities is fundamental for robustness and humanrobot engagement. In this paper, we review the state of the art within the past two decades, design trends, and current applications of conversational affective SAR for ageing and dementia support. A horizon scanning of AI voice technology for healthcare, including ubiquitous smart speakers, is further introduced to address current gaps inhibiting home use. We discuss the role of user-centred approaches in the design of voice systems, including the capacity to handle communication breakdowns for effective use by target populations. We summarise the state of development in interactions using speech and natural language processing, which forms a baseline for longitudinal health monitoring and cognitive assessment. Drawing from this foundation, we identify open challenges and propose future directions to advance conversational affective social robots for: 1) user engagement, 2) deployment in real-world settings, and 3) clinical translation

More than 50 research challenges investigated all over Spain by more than 150 experts within CSIC are presented in eight chapters. Chapter One introduces key concepts and tackles the issue of the integration of knowledge (representation), reasoning and learning in the design of artificial entities. Chapter Two analyses challenges associated with the development of theories –and supporting technologies– for modelling the behaviour of autonomous agents. Chapter Six pays attention to the ethical, legal, economic and social challenges coming alongside the development of smart systems.
