    Joint Spectrum Sensing and Resource Allocation for OFDM-based Transmission with a Cognitive Relay

    In this paper, we investigate the joint spectrum sensing and resource allocation problem to maximize throughput capacity of an OFDM-based cognitive radio link with a cognitive relay. By applying a cognitive relay that uses decode and forward (D&F), we achieve more reliable communications, generating less interference (by needing less transmit power) and more diversity gain. In order to account for imperfections in spectrum sensing, the proposed schemes jointly modify energy detector thresholds and allocates transmit powers to all cognitive radio (CR) subcarriers, while simultaneously assigning subcarrier pairs for secondary users (SU) and the cognitive relay. This problem is cast as a constrained optimization problem with constraints on (1) interference introduced by the SU and the cognitive relay to the PUs; (2) miss-detection and false alarm probabilities and (3) subcarrier pairing for transmission on the SU transmitter and the cognitive relay and (4) minimum Quality of Service (QoS) for each CR subcarrier. We propose one optimal and two sub-optimal schemes all of which are compared to other schemes in the literature.     Generalized Degrees of Freedom of the Interference Channel with a Signal Cognitive Relay

    We study the interference channel with a signal cognitive relay. A signal cognitive relay knows the transmit signals (but not the messages) of the sources non-causally, and tries to help them communicating with their respective destinations. We derive upper bounds and provide achievable schemes for this channel. These upper and lower bounds are shown to be tight from generalized degrees of freedom point of view. As a result, a characterization of the generalized degrees of freedom of the interference channel with a signal cognitive relay is given.Comment: Results submitted to ISIT 2010, 19 pages, 3 figure

    Exact Outage Performance Analysis of Multiuser Multi-relay Spectrum Sharing Cognitive Networks

    In this paper, we investigate the outage performance of dual-hop multiuser multi-relay cognitive radio networks under spectrum sharing constraints. Using an efficient relay-destination selection scheme, the exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions for the outage probability are derived. From these expressions it is indicated that the achieved diversity order is only determined by the number of secondary user (SU) relays and destinations, and equals to M+N (where M and N are the number of destination nodes and relay nodes, respectively). Further, we find that the coding gain of the SU network will be affected by the interference threshold barIbar I at the primary user (PU) receiver. Specifically, as the increases of the interference threshold, the coding gain of the considered network approaches to that of the multiuser multi-relay system in the non-cognitive network. Finally, our study is corroborated by representative numerical examples
