    Perceptually-Driven Video Coding with the Daala Video Codec

    The Daala project is a royalty-free video codec that attempts to compete with the best patent-encumbered codecs. Part of our strategy is to replace core tools of traditional video codecs with alternative approaches, many of them designed to take perceptual aspects into account, rather than optimizing for simple metrics like PSNR. This paper documents some of our experiences with these tools, which ones worked and which did not.     Perceptual Quality Measure using a Spatio-Temporal Model of the Human Visual System

    This paper addresses the problem of quality estimation of digitally coded video sequences. The topic is of great interest since many products in digital video are about to be released and it is thus important to have robust methodologies for testing and performance evaluation of such devices. The inherent problem is that human vision has to be taken into account in order to assess the quality of a sequence with a good correlation with human judgment. It is well known that the commonly used metric, the signal-to-noise ratio is not correlated with human vision. A metric for the assessment of video coding quality is presented. It is based on a multi- channel model of human spatio-temporal vision that has been parameterized for video coding applications by psychophysical experiments. The visual mechanisms of vision are simulated by a spatio-temporal filter bank. The decomposition is then used to account for phenomena as contrast sensitivity and masking. Once the amount of distortions actually perceived is known, quality estimation can be assessed at various levels. The described metric is able to rate the overall quality of the decoded video sequence as well as the rendition of important features of the sequence such as contours or textures

The consumer can now benefit from hardware and software which was considered state-of-the-art several years ago. The advantages offered by the digital technologies are major but the same digital technology opens the door for unlimited piracy. Copying an analogue VCR tape was certainly possible and relatively easy, in spite of various forms of protection, but due to the analogue environment, the subsequent copies had an inherent loss in quality. This was a natural way of limiting the multiple copying of a video material. With digital technology, this barrier disappears, being possible to make as many copies as desired, without any loss in quality whatsoever. Digital watermarking is one of the best available tools for fighting this threat. The aim of the present work was to develop a digital watermarking system compliant with the recommendations drawn by the EBU, for video broadcast monitoring. Since the watermark can be inserted in either spatial domain or transform domain, this aspect was investigated and led to the conclusion that wavelet transform is one of the best solutions available. Since watermarking is not an easy task, especially considering the robustness under various attacks several techniques were employed in order to increase the capacity/robustness of the system: spread-spectrum and modulation techniques to cast the watermark, powerful error correction to protect the mark, human visual models to insert a robust mark and to ensure its invisibility. The combination of these methods led to a major improvement, but yet the system wasn't robust to several important geometrical attacks. In order to achieve this last milestone, the system uses two distinct watermarks: a spatial domain reference watermark and the main watermark embedded in the wavelet domain. By using this reference watermark and techniques specific to image registration, the system is able to determine the parameters of the attack and revert it. Once the attack was reverted, the main watermark is recovered. The final result is a high capacity, blind DWr-based video watermarking system, robust to a wide range of attacks.BBC Research & Developmen

    Visually lossless coding in HEVC : a high bit depth and 4:4:4 capable JND-based perceptual quantisation technique for HEVC

    Due to the increasing prevalence of high bit depth and YCbCr 4:4:4 video data, it is desirable to develop a JND-based visually lossless coding technique which can account for high bit depth 4:4:4 data in addition to standard 8-bit precision chroma subsampled data. In this paper, we propose a Coding Block (CB)-level JND-based luma and chroma perceptual quantisation technique for HEVC named Pixel-PAQ. Pixel-PAQ exploits both luminance masking and chrominance masking to achieve JND-based visually lossless coding; the proposed method is compatible with high bit depth YCbCr 4:4:4 video data of any resolution. When applied to YCbCr 4:4:4 high bit depth video data, Pixel-PAQ can achieve vast bitrate reductions – of up to 75% (68.6% over four QP data points) – compared with a state-of-the-art luma-based JND method for HEVC named IDSQ. Moreover, the participants in the subjective evaluations confirm that visually lossless coding is successfully achieved by Pixel-PAQ (at a PSNR value of 28.04 dB in one test)
