    Checking the validity of scenarios in UML models

    Abstract. In the UML, sequence diagrams are used to state scenarios, i.e., examples of interactions between objects. As such, sequence diagrams are being developed in the early design phases where requirements on the system are being captured. Their intuitively appealing character and conceptual simplicity makes them an ideal tool for formulating simple properties on a system, even for non-experts. Besides guiding the development of a UML model, sequence diagrams can thus furthermore be used as a starting point for the verification of the UML model. In this paper, we show how the requirements on the system as stated in sequence diagrams can be (semi-automatically) validated for UML models consisting of class diagrams, state machines and structure diagrams. The sequence diagrams that we consider can be universally or existentially quantified or negated, i.e., state scenarios that should always, sometimes or never occur. For validating them in a UML model, we translate both model and sequence diagrams into a formal specification language (the process algebra CSP), and develop procedures for employing the standard CSP model checker (FDR) for checking their validity

    Functional Size Measurement Tool-based Approach for Mobile Game

    Nowadays, software effort estimation plays an important role in software project management due to its extensive use in industry to monitor progress, and performance, determine overall productivity and assist in project planning. After the success of methods such as IFPUG Function Point Analysis, MarkII Function Point Analysis, and COSMIC Full Function Points, several other extension methods have been introduced to be adopted in software projects. Despite the efficiency in measuring the software cost, software effort estimation, unfortunately, is facing several issues; it requires some knowledge, effort, and a significant amount of time to conduct the measurement, thus slightly ruining the advantages of this approach. This paper demonstrates a functional size measurement tool, named UML Point tool, that utilizes the concept of IFPUG Function Point Analysis directly to Unified Modeling Language (UML) model. The tool allows the UML eXchange Format (UXF) file to decode the UML model of mobile game requirement and extract the diagrams into component complexity, object interface complexity, and sequence diagram complexity, according to the defined measurement rules. UML Point tool then automatically compute the functional size, effort, time, human resources, and total development cost of mobile game. Besides, this paper also provides a simple case study to validate the tool. The initial results proved that the tool could be useful to improve estimation accuracy for mobile game application development and found to be reliable to be applied in the mobile game industry

    This work deals with the issue of implementing a UML-RT standard, one of the latest notations for object oriented specification and design, in the developing-process of new real-time software for Radio Base Stations in the 2000 series at Ericsson. UML-RT is the real-time extension of the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The thesis investigates the design-, implementation- and verification-problems that exist when combining the current RT functions, Multi Platform Support, with the UML-RT tool, ObjecTime Developer. We describe UML, look at the advantages and disadvantages of using UML-RT tools and investigate current and future possibilities in ObjecTime Developer

    Real Time System Development with UML: A Case Study

    In this thesis we look at the challenges regarding VoIP and to the developer of an application providing this service. We explore CASE tools that can be used to model and verify the design of a VoIP application. VoIP applications will not be accepted by the market unless it is able to provide an audio quality comparable to traditional phones. The voice module of the application that we analyse initially did not meet these requirements. We investigate how the design and implementation must be altered to meet them. Although UML in its current specification is not adapted to the design of real-time applications, CASE tools exist that propose an extension of UML for this purpose. We investigate two of these - Rational Rose RT and Telelogic Tau - for their usefulness in re-engineering the application. We show their support partially covers our needs and we present novel UML concepts that would have been useful in resolving our task. We further demonstrate important new concepts of UML 2.0
