The roda de choro musical and social analysis based on John Blacking's concept of musical order

    Get PDF
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe Roda de Choro offers a rich environment in order to analyze the musical context of performance and the social context which nourishes the musical relations. This article aims at analyzing the relationship of both musical and social contexts according to the concept of musical order established by John Blacking (1995), who argues that "music cannot exist without the perception of order that organizes sound". Empirical data was carried through interviews and based on ethnographic field work realized during eighteen months in a live music restaurant in Brasilia. Through discourse analysis and registers analysis it was possible to identify elements which form musical order inside the Choro according to the musician's proposal. Analyses unveil the role of Rodas de Choro as social contexts for maintaining and to recreating choro musical tradition. As a musical gender, Choro involves a whole set of extra-musical factors that impacts musicians' performance

Extra-musical elements in the work of K-Ximbinho : questions about musical iconography in their record covers between 1950s and 1960s

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTK-Ximbinho participated along with other musicians from the 1950s and 1960s in a process aimed at modernizing the samba and choro in the introduction of various jazz.elements into Brazilian traditional styles. This blending of different musical genres, known at the time as "samba-jazz" or "choro jazz" was not limited to mixing rhythmic, harmonic and melodic elements, but also in the negotiation of present expressions, images and ways from North-American culture in Rio de Janeiro in a pre Bossa Nova era. It's possible to verify on the covers of albums recorded by K-Ximbinho that the negotiation between these two cultures is manifested in the form of images and texts meant to inform the consumer how each work was intended, highlighting the innovation of samba and choro and proposing the creation of this new musical style

To test the effectiveness of skin to skin contact, between mother and child after birth, in reducing stress and pain behavior manifested by the cries of the newborn (NB), from the procedure of vaccination against Hepatitis B. METHODS: This is a quasi-experimental comparative study covering 40 full-term newborns, divided into two groups, with or without skin contact with their mothers after birth, and were compared in terms of time crying during vaccination against Hepatitis B. RESULTS: We observed, in both groups, changes in crying time during the phases of the process. CONCLUSION: The effect of contact in reducing crying time of neonates was not demonstrated statistically.

Laser anemometer measurements in a transonic axial-flow fan rotor

    Get PDF
Laser anemometer surveys were made of the 3-D flow field in NASA rotor 67, a low aspect ratio transonic axial-flow fan rotor. The test rotor has a tip relative Mach number of 1.38. The flowfield was surveyed at design speed at near peak efficiency and near stall operating conditions. Data is presented in the form of relative Mach number and relative flow angle distributions on surfaces of revolution at nine spanwise locations evenly spaced from hub to tip. At each spanwise location, data was acquired upstream, within, and downstream of the rotor. Aerodynamic performance measurements and detailed rotor blade and annulus geometry are also presented so that the experimental results can be used as a test case for 3-D turbomachinery flow analysis codes

A flight investigation of performance and loads for a helicopter with NLR-1T main-rotor blade sections

    Get PDF
Data on performance and rotor loads for a teetering-rotor, AH-1G helicopter flown with a main rotor that had the NLR-1T airfoil as the blade-section contour are presented. The test envelope included hover, forward-flight speed sweeps from 35 to 85 m/sec, and collective-fixed maneuvers at about 0.25 tip-speed ratio. The data set for each test point described vehicle flight state, control positions, rotor loads, power requirements, and blade motions. Rotor loads are reviewed primarily in terms of peak-to-peak and harmonic content. Lower frequency components predominated for most loads and generally increased with increased airspeed, but not necessarily with increased maneuver load factor
