Algorithms for Fast Aggregated Convergecast in Sensor Networks
Fast and periodic collection of aggregated data
is of considerable interest for mission-critical and continuous
monitoring applications in sensor networks. In the many-to-one
communication paradigm, referred to as convergecast, we focus
on applications wherein data packets are aggregated at each hop
en-route to the sink along a tree-based routing topology, and
address the problem of minimizing the convergecast schedule
length by utilizing multiple frequency channels. The primary
hindrance in minimizing the schedule length is the presence of
interfering links. We prove that it is NP-complete to determine
whether all the interfering links in an arbitrary network can
be removed using at most a constant number of frequencies.
We give a sufficient condition on the number of frequencies for
which all the interfering links can be removed, and propose a
polynomial time algorithm that minimizes the schedule length
in this case. We also prove that minimizing the schedule length
for a given number of frequencies on an arbitrary network is
NP-complete, and describe a greedy scheme that gives a constant
factor approximation on unit disk graphs. When the routing tree
is not given as an input to the problem, we prove that a constant
factor approximation is still achievable for degree-bounded trees.
Finally, we evaluate our algorithms through simulations and
compare their performance under different network parameters
Multi-Channel Scheduling for Fast Convergecast in Wireless Sensor Networks
We explore the following fundamental question -
how fast can information be collected from a wireless sensor
network? We consider a number of design parameters such
as, power control, time and frequency scheduling, and routing.
There are essentially two factors that hinder efficient data
collection - interference and the half-duplex single-transceiver
radios. We show that while power control helps in reducing the
number of transmission slots to complete a convergecast under a
single frequency channel, scheduling transmissions on different
frequency channels is more efficient in mitigating the effects of
interference (empirically, 6 channels suffice for most 100-node
networks). With these observations, we define a receiver-based
channel assignment problem, and prove it to be NP-complete on
general graphs. We then introduce a greedy channel assignment
algorithm that efficiently eliminates interference, and compare
its performance with other existing schemes via simulations.
Once the interference is completely eliminated, we show that
with half-duplex single-transceiver radios the achievable schedule
length is lower-bounded by max(2nk â 1,N), where nk is the
maximum number of nodes on any subtree and N is the number
of nodes in the network. We modify an existing distributed time
slot assignment algorithm to achieve this bound when a suitable
balanced routing scheme is employed. Through extensive simulations,
we demonstrate that convergecast can be completed within
up to 50% less time slots, in 100-node networks, using multiple
channels as compared to that with single-channel communication.
Finally, we also demonstrate further improvements that are
possible when the sink is equipped with multiple transceivers
or when there are multiple sinks to collect data
Cores of Cooperative Games in Information Theory
Cores of cooperative games are ubiquitous in information theory, and arise
most frequently in the characterization of fundamental limits in various
scenarios involving multiple users. Examples include classical settings in
network information theory such as Slepian-Wolf source coding and multiple
access channels, classical settings in statistics such as robust hypothesis
testing, and new settings at the intersection of networking and statistics such
as distributed estimation problems for sensor networks. Cooperative game theory
allows one to understand aspects of all of these problems from a fresh and
unifying perspective that treats users as players in a game, sometimes leading
to new insights. At the heart of these analyses are fundamental dualities that
have been long studied in the context of cooperative games; for information
theoretic purposes, these are dualities between information inequalities on the
one hand and properties of rate, capacity or other resource allocation regions

Cross-layer design of multi-hop wireless networks
MULTI -hop wireless networks are usually defined as a collection of nodes
equipped with radio transmitters, which not only have the capability to
communicate each other in a multi-hop fashion, but also to route each othersâ data
packets. The distributed nature of such networks makes them suitable for a variety of
applications where there are no assumed reliable central entities, or controllers, and
may significantly improve the scalability issues of conventional single-hop wireless
networks.
This Ph.D. dissertation mainly investigates two aspects of the research issues
related to the efficient multi-hop wireless networks design, namely: (a) network
protocols and (b) network management, both in cross-layer design paradigms to
ensure the notion of service quality, such as quality of service (QoS) in wireless mesh
networks (WMNs) for backhaul applications and quality of information (QoI) in
wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for sensing tasks. Throughout the presentation of
this Ph.D. dissertation, different network settings are used as illustrative examples,
however the proposed algorithms, methodologies, protocols, and models are not
restricted in the considered networks, but rather have wide applicability.
First, this dissertation proposes a cross-layer design framework integrating
a distributed proportional-fair scheduler and a QoS routing algorithm, while using
WMNs as an illustrative example. The proposed approach has significant performance
gain compared with other network protocols. Second, this dissertation proposes
a generic admission control methodology for any packet network, wired and
wireless, by modeling the network as a black box, and using a generic mathematical

function and Taylor expansion to capture the admission impact. Third, this dissertation
further enhances the previous designs by proposing a negotiation process,
to bridge the applicationsâ service quality demands and the resource management,
while using WSNs as an illustrative example. This approach allows the negotiation
among different service classes and WSN resource allocations to reach the optimal
operational status. Finally, the guarantees of the service quality are extended to
the environment of multiple, disconnected, mobile subnetworks, where the question
of how to maintain communications using dynamically controlled, unmanned data
ferries is investigated
Analysis methodology for flow-level evaluation of a hybrid mobile-sensor network
Our society uses a large diversity of co-existing wired and wireless networks in order to satisfy its communication needs. A cooper- ation between these networks can benefit performance, service availabil- ity and deployment ease, and leads to the emergence of hybrid networks. This position paper focuses on a hybrid mobile-sensor network identify- ing potential advantages and challenges of its use and defining feasible applications. The main value of the paper, however, is in the proposed analysis approach to evaluate the performance at the mobile network side given the mixed mobile-sensor traffic. The approach combines packet- level analysis with modelling of flow-level behaviour and can be applied for the study of various application scenarios. In this paper we consider two applications with distinct traffic models namely multimedia traffic and best-effort traffic
Network Information Flow with Correlated Sources
In this paper, we consider a network communications problem in which multiple
correlated sources must be delivered to a single data collector node, over a
network of noisy independent point-to-point channels. We prove that perfect
reconstruction of all the sources at the sink is possible if and only if, for
all partitions of the network nodes into two subsets S and S^c such that the
sink is always in S^c, we have that H(U_S|U_{S^c}) < \sum_{i\in S,j\in S^c}
C_{ij}. Our main finding is that in this setup a general source/channel
separation theorem holds, and that Shannon information behaves as a classical
network flow, identical in nature to the flow of water in pipes. At first
glance, it might seem surprising that separation holds in a fairly general
network situation like the one we study. A closer look, however, reveals that
the reason for this is that our model allows only for independent
point-to-point channels between pairs of nodes, and not multiple-access and/or
broadcast channels, for which separation is well known not to hold. This
``information as flow'' view provides an algorithmic interpretation for our
results, among which perhaps the most important one is the optimality of
