Adaptive TTL-Based Caching for Content Delivery
Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) deliver a majority of the user-requested
content on the Internet, including web pages, videos, and software downloads. A
CDN server caches and serves the content requested by users. Designing caching
algorithms that automatically adapt to the heterogeneity, burstiness, and
non-stationary nature of real-world content requests is a major challenge and
is the focus of our work. While there is much work on caching algorithms for
stationary request traffic, the work on non-stationary request traffic is very
limited. Consequently, most prior models are inaccurate for production CDN
traffic that is non-stationary.
We propose two TTL-based caching algorithms and provide provable guarantees
for content request traffic that is bursty and non-stationary. The first
algorithm called d-TTL dynamically adapts a TTL parameter using a stochastic
approximation approach. Given a feasible target hit rate, we show that the hit
rate of d-TTL converges to its target value for a general class of bursty
traffic that allows Markov dependence over time and non-stationary arrivals.
The second algorithm called f-TTL uses two caches, each with its own TTL. The
first-level cache adaptively filters out non-stationary traffic, while the
second-level cache stores frequently-accessed stationary traffic. Given
feasible targets for both the hit rate and the expected cache size, f-TTL
asymptotically achieves both targets. We implement d-TTL and f-TTL and evaluate
both algorithms using an extensive nine-day trace consisting of 500 million
requests from a production CDN server. We show that both d-TTL and f-TTL
converge to their hit rate targets with an error of about 1.3%. But, f-TTL
requires a significantly smaller cache size than d-TTL to achieve the same hit
rate, since it effectively filters out the non-stationary traffic for
rarely-accessed objects
Continuous client-side query evaluation over dynamic linked data
Existing solutions to query dynamic Linked Data sources extend the SPARQL language, and require continuous server processing for each query. Traditional SPARQL endpoints already accept highly expressive queries, so extending these endpoints for time-sensitive queries increases the server cost even further. To make continuous querying over dynamic Linked Data more affordable, we extend the low-cost Triple Pattern Fragments (TPF) interface with support for time-sensitive queries. In this paper, we introduce the TPF Query Streamer that allows clients to evaluate SPARQL queries with continuously updating results. Our experiments indicate that this extension significantly lowers the server complexity, at the expense of an increase in the execution time per query. We prove that by moving the complexity of continuously evaluating queries over dynamic Linked Data to the clients and thus increasing bandwidth usage, the cost at the server side is significantly reduced. Our results show that this solution makes real-time querying more scalable for a large amount of concurrent clients when compared to the alternatives
Poor Man's Content Centric Networking (with TCP)
A number of different architectures have been proposed in support of data-oriented or information-centric networking. Besides a similar visions, they share the need for designing a new networking architecture. We present an incrementally deployable approach to content-centric networking based upon TCP. Content-aware senders cooperate with probabilistically operating routers for scalable content delivery (to unmodified clients), effectively supporting opportunistic caching for time-shifted access as well as de-facto synchronous multicast delivery. Our approach is application protocol-independent and provides support beyond HTTP caching or managed CDNs. We present our protocol design along with a Linux-based implementation and some initial feasibility checks
GreedyDual-Join: Locality-Aware Buffer Management for Approximate Join Processing Over Data Streams
We investigate adaptive buffer management techniques for approximate evaluation of sliding window joins over multiple data streams. In many applications, data stream processing systems have limited memory or have to deal with very high speed data streams. In both cases, computing the exact results of joins between these streams may not be feasible, mainly because the buffers used to compute the joins contain much smaller number of tuples than the tuples contained in the sliding windows. Therefore, a stream buffer management policy is needed in that case. We show that the buffer replacement policy is an important determinant of the quality of the produced results. To that end, we propose GreedyDual-Join (GDJ) an adaptive and locality-aware buffering technique for managing these buffers. GDJ exploits the temporal correlations (at both long and short time scales), which we found to be prevalent in many real data streams. We note that our algorithm is readily applicable to multiple data streams and multiple joins and requires almost no additional system resources. We report results of an experimental study using both synthetic and real-world data sets. Our results demonstrate the superiority and flexibility of our approach when contrasted to other recently proposed techniques
Operating-system support for distributed multimedia
Multimedia applications place new demands upon processors, networks and operating systems. While some network designers, through ATM for example, have considered revolutionary approaches to supporting multimedia, the same cannot be said for operating systems designers. Most work is evolutionary in nature, attempting to identify additional features that can be added to existing systems to support multimedia. Random Linear Network Coding for 5G Mobile Video Delivery
An exponential increase in mobile video delivery will continue with the
demand for higher resolution, multi-view and large-scale multicast video
services. Novel fifth generation (5G) 3GPP New Radio (NR) standard will bring a
number of new opportunities for optimizing video delivery across both 5G core
and radio access networks. One of the promising approaches for video quality
adaptation, throughput enhancement and erasure protection is the use of
packet-level random linear network coding (RLNC). In this review paper, we
discuss the integration of RLNC into the 5G NR standard, building upon the
ideas and opportunities identified in 4G LTE. We explicitly identify and
discuss in detail novel 5G NR features that provide support for RLNC-based
video delivery in 5G, thus pointing out to the promising avenues for future
