Capacity limits and matching properties of integrated capacitors

    Get PDF
Theoretical limits for the capacitance density of integrated capacitors with combined lateral and vertical field components are derived. These limits are used to investigate the efficiency of various capacitive structures such as lateral flux and quasifractal capacitors. This study leads to two new capacitor structures with high lateral-field efficiencies. These new capacitors demonstrate larger capacities, superior matching properties, tighter tolerances, and higher self-resonance frequencies than the standard horizontal parallel plate and previously reported lateral-field capacitors, while maintaining comparable quality factors. These superior qualities are verified by simulation and experimental results

    Fractal capacitors

    Get PDF
A linear capacitor structure using fractal geometries is described. This capacitor exploits both lateral and vertical electric fields to increase the capacitance per unit area. Compared to standard parallel-plate capacitors, the parasitic bottom-plate capacitance is reduced. Unlike conventional metal-to-metal capacitors, the capacitance density increases with technology scaling. A classic fractal structure is implemented with 0.6-μm metal spacing, and a factor of 2.3 increase in the capacitance per unit area is observed. It is shown that capacitance boost factors in excess of ten may be possible as technology continues to scale. A computer-aided-design tool to automatically generate and analyze custom fractal layouts has been developed

Nonlinear Performance of BAW Filters Including BST Capacitors

    Get PDF
This paper evaluates the nonlinear effects occurring in a bulk acoustic wave (BAW) filter which includes barium strontium titanate (BST) capacitors to cancel the electrostatic capacitance of the BAW resonators. To do that we consider the nonlinear effects on the BAW resonators by use of a nonlinear Mason model. This model accounts for the distributed nonlinearities inherent in the materials forming the resonator. The whole filter is then implemented by properly connecting the resonators in a balanced configuration. Additional BST capacitors are included in the filter topology. The nonlinear behavior of the BST capacitors is also accounted in the overall nonlinear assessment. The whole circuit is then used to evaluate its nonlinear behavior. It is found that the nonlinear contribution arising from the ferroelectric nature of the BST capacitors makes it impractical to fulfill the linearity requirements of commercial filters

Fast Molecular-Dynamics Simulation for Ferroelectric Thin-Film Capacitors Using a First-Principles Effective Hamiltonian

    Get PDF
A newly developed fast molecular-dynamics method is applied to BaTiO3 ferroelectric thin-film capacitors with short-circuited electrodes or under applied voltage. The molecular-dynamics simulations based on a first-principles effective Hamiltonian clarify that dead layers (or passive layers) between ferroelectrics and electrodes markedly affect the properties of capacitors, and predict that the system is unable to hop between a uniformly polarized ferroelectric structure and a striped ferroelectric domain structure at low temperatures. Simulations of hysteresis loops of thin-film capacitors are also performed, and their dependence on film thickness, epitaxial constraints, and electrodes are discussed.Comment: 12 figures, 1 table. Comparison between flying capacitor and modular multilevel inverter

    Get PDF
The paper describes the operational principle of flying capacitor and modular multilevel inverters. The detailed discussions of dc link capacitors voltage balancing methods for both inverters are given in order to enable fair comparison. The causes of dc link capacitors voltage imbalance in flying capacitor multilevel inverter with more than three levels are highlighted. Computer simulation is used to compare the performance of both inverters under several operating conditions

Reliability Issues with PME and BME Ceramic Capacitors

    Get PDF
This work is a review of reliability issues specific for low-voltage precious metal electrode (PME) and base metal electrode (BME) multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC). A special attention is given to degradation and failures in capacitors with defects, in particular with cracks. Temperature and voltage reliability acceleration factors have been calculated based on approximation of distributions of degradation rates of leakage currents using a general log-linear Weibull model. Results show a substantial difference in behavior of BME and PME capacitors with defects. Mechanisms of degradation and failures in humid and dry environments and risks of overstressing capacitors during highly accelerated life testing (HALT) are discussed

Kinetics of Moisture Sorption and Reverse Bias Degradation in Chip Tantalum Capacitors

    Get PDF
Exposure of chip MnO2 tantalum capacitors to humid environments might result in increased ESR, leakage currents, and first turn-on failures. However, there is a lack of literature data on the effect of moisture on reverse bias behavior of the parts. The presence of moisture can also result in pop-corning when a high water vapor pressure develops when moisture absorbed in pores of tantalum slugs vaporizes instantly during soldering process resulting in damage to capacitors. A study of kinetics of moisture ingress to and release from active elements of capacitors would allow a better understanding of degradation mechanisms and is important for preventing failures. In this work, a technique for investigation of moisture sorption and desorption in solid chip tantalum capacitors that employs tantalum slugs as a humidity sensor have been developed and kinetics of the process analyzed for different types of capacitors at temperatures from room to 125 C. A model that relates diffusion characteristics of polymer cases and size of the slugs to characteristic times of moisture sorption has been developed. A strong effect of moisture on long-term degradation of reverse bias currents in MnO2 cathode capacitors has been demonstrated and physical mechanisms discussed

Voltage-Mode Highpass, Bandpass, Lowpass and Notch Biquadratic Filters Using Single DDCC

    Get PDF
A new voltage-mode multifunction biquadratic filter using one differential difference current conveyor (DDCC), two grounded capacitors and three resistors is presented. The proposed circuit offers the following attractive advantages: realizing highpass, bandpass, lowpass and notch filter functions, simultaneously, from the same circuit configuration; employing grounded capacitors, which is ideal for integration and simpler circuit configuration

    The tantalum-cased tantalum capacitor

    Get PDF
Tantalum-cased tantalum capacitors were tested with regard to temperature stability, capacitance ratio, surge current capabilities, shock, vibration, and thermal shock. They were found to be superior to the conventional wet slug tantalum capacitor cased in silver, since they are more resistant to sulfuric acid. The tantalum-cased tantalum capacitors are widely accepted for use in critical electronic equipment because of their excellent performance and reliability
