    Building and exploring semantic equivalences resources

    Language resources that include semantic equivalences at word level are common, and its usefulness is well established in text processing applications, as in the case of search. Named entities also play an important role for text based applications, but are not usually covered by the previously mentioned resources. The present work describes the WES base, Wikipedia Entity Synonym base, a freely available resource based on the Wikipedia. The WES base was built for the Portuguese Language, with the same format of another freely available thesaurus for the same language, the TeP base, which allows integration of equivalences both at word level and entity level. The resource has been built in a language independent way, so that it can be extended to different languages.     An Integrated Framework for Treebanks and Multilayer Annotations

    Treebank formats and associated software tools are proliferating rapidly, with little consideration for interoperability. We survey a wide variety of treebank structures and operations, and show how they can be mapped onto the annotation graph model, and leading to an integrated framework encompassing tree and non-tree annotations alike.     While we witness an explosion of exploration tools for simple datasets on Web 2.0 designed for use by ordinary citizens, the goal of a usable interface for supporting navigation and sense-making over arbitrary linked data has remained elusive. The purpose of this paper is to analyse why - what makes exploring linked data so hard? Through a user-centered use case scenario, we work through requirements for sense making with data to extract functional requirements and to compare these against our tools to see what challenges emerge to deliver a useful, usable knowledge building experience with linked data. We present presentation layer and heterogeneous data integration challenges and offer practical considerations for moving forward to effective linked data sensemaking tools

    Truth : a concept unlike any other

    This paper explores the nature of the concept of truth. It does not offer an analysis or definition of truth, or an account of how it relates to other concepts. Instead, it explores what sort of concept truth is by considering what sorts of thoughts it enables us to think. My conclusion is that truth is a part of each and every propositional thought. The concept of truth is therefore best thought of as the ability to token propositional thoughts. I explore what implications this view has for existing accounts of concepts, and argue that truth is a concept unlike any other

    Report on the EHCR (Deliverable 26.2)

    This deliverable is the second for Workpackage 26. The first, submitted after Month 12, summarised the areas of research that the partners had identified as being relevant to the semantic indexing of the EHR. This second one reports progress on the key threads of work identified by the partners during the project to contribute towards semantically interoperable and processable EHRs. This report provides a set of short summaries on key topics that have emerged as important, and to which the partners are able to make strong contributions. Some of these are also being extended via two new EU Framework 6 proposals that include WP26 partners: this is also a measure of the success of this Network of Excellence

    A Calculus of Mobile Resources

    We introduce a calculus of Mobile Resources (MR) tailored for the design and analysis of systems containing mobile, possibly nested, computing devices that may have resource and access constraints, and which are not copyable nor modifiable per se. We provide a reduction as well as a labelled transition semantics and prove a correspondence be- tween barbed bisimulation congruence and a higher-order bisimulation. We provide examples of the expressiveness of the calculus, and apply the theory to prove one of its characteristic properties

    Building a Lexico-Semantic Resource Collaboratively

    Multilingual lexico-semantic resources are used in different semantic services such as meaning extraction or data integration and linking, which are essential for the development of real-world applications. However their use is hampered by the lack of maintenance and quality control mechanisms over their content. The Universal Knowledge Core (UKC) is a multilingual lexico-semantic resource designed as a multi-layered ontology that has a language-independent semantic layer, the concept core, and a language-specific lexico-semantic layer, the natural language core. In this paper, we focus on expert-based, collaborative workflow for building and maintaining our resource through lexicalisation and evaluation of language elements via a dedicated User Interface (UI). We have run a three-month study to analyse the feasibility of the proposed solution. We interviewed participants to obtain a comprehensive vision with respect to different aspects related to the way they interacted with the UI and how the content presented through it was perceived. We concluded that this collaborative experience fostered not only the implementation of a resource but also an improvement of its functionalities, and, above all, it represented an example of effective knowledge sharing which opened up the way to a network of collaborative intelligence

    Matching Metamodels with Semantic Systems - An Experience Report

    Abstract: Ontology and schema matching are well established techniques, which have been applied in various integration scenarios, e.g., web service composition and database integration. Consequently, matching tools enabling automatic matching of various kinds of schemas are available. In the field of model-driven engineering, in contrast to schema and ontology integration, the integration of modeling languages relies on manual tasks such as writing model transformation code, which is tedious and error-prone. Therefore, we propose the application of ontology and schema matching techniques for automatically exploring semantic correspondences between metamodels, which are currently the modeling language definitions of choice. The main focus of this paper is on reporting preliminary results and lessons learned by evaluating currently available ontology matching tools for their metamodel matching potential.
