    An Adaptive Integration Architecture for Software Reuse

    The problem of building large, reliable software systems in a controlled, cost-effective way, the so-called software crisis problem, is one of computer science\u27s great challenges. From the very outset of computing as science, software reuse has been touted as a means to overcome the software crisis issue. Over three decades later, the software community is still grappling with the problem of building large reliable software systems in a controlled, cost effective way; the software crisis problem is alive and well. Today, many computer scientists still regard software reuse as a very powerful vehicle to improve the practice of software engineering. The advantage of amortizing software development cost through reuse continues to be a major objective in the art of building software, even though the tools, methods, languages, and overall understanding of software engineering have changed significantly over the years. Our work is primarily focused on the development of an Adaptive Application Integration Architecture Framework. Without good integration tools and techniques, reuse is difficult and will probably not happen to any significant degree. In the development of the adaptive integration architecture framework, the primary enabling concept is object-oriented design supported by the unified modeling language. The concepts of software architecture, design patterns, and abstract data views are used in a structured and disciplined manner to established a generic framework. This framework is applied to solve the Enterprise Application Integration (EM) problem in the telecommunications operations support system (OSS) enterprise marketplace. The proposed adaptive application integration architecture framework facilitates application reusability and flexible business process re-engineering. The architecture addresses the need for modern businesses to continuously redefine themselves to address changing market conditions in an increasingly competitive environment. We have developed a number of Enterprise Application Integration design patterns to enable the implementation of an EAI framework in a definite and repeatable manner. The design patterns allow for integration of commercial off-the-shelf applications into a unified enterprise framework facilitating true application portfolio interoperability. The notion of treating application services as infrastructure services and using business processes to combine them arbitrarily provides a natural way of thinking about adaptable and reusable software systems. We present a mathematical formalism for the specification of design patterns. This specification constitutes an extension of the basic concepts from many-sorted algebra. In particular, the notion of signature is extended to that of a vector, consisting of a set of linearly independent signatures. The approach can be used to reason about various properties including efforts for component reuse and to facilitate complex largescale software development by providing the developer with design alternatives and support for automatic program verification

    The integration of mobile workplaces in the (electronically mapped) intra-enterprise value chain is a major and still increasing corporate IT issue. Although the usage of mobile technologies for this purpose is far behind expectations and numerous failures can be observed,still little work has been done on theory building in this area. In this contribution we identify and compare existing frameworks for adoption and impact of mobile technology to support mobile business processes. The hypotheses underlying these frameworks are challenged with experiences from three long-term case studies which are diverse in industry, company size and other factors in order to scrutinize their potential for generalization. The outcome is a set of hypotheses that show robustness against variation of major parameters and thus may be suitable to serve as a basis for a generalized and unified framework on mobile-integrated business processes.

    An approach to resource modelling in support of the life cycle engineering of enterprise systems

    Enterprise modelling can facilitate the design, analysis, control and construction of contemporary enterprises which can compete in world-wide Product markets. This research involves a systematic study of enterprise modelling with a particular focus on resource modelling in support of the life cycle engineering of enterprise systems. This led to the specification and design of a framework for resource modelling. This framework was conceived to: classify resource types; identify the different functions that resource modelling can support, with respect to different life phases of enterprise systems; clarify the relationship between resource models and other modelling perspectives provide mechanisms which link resource models and other types of models; identify guidelines for the capture of information - on resources, leading to the establishment of a set of resource reference models. The author also designed and implemented a resource modelling tool which conforms to the principles laid down by the framework. This tool realises important aspects of the resource modeffing concepts so defined. Furthermore, two case studies have been carried out. One models a metal cutting environment, and the other is based on an electronics industry problem area. In this way, the feasibility of concepts embodied in the framework and the design of the resource modelling tool has been tested and evaluated. Following a literature survey and preliminary investigation, the CIMOSA enterprise modelling and integration methodology was adopted and extended within this research. Here the resource modelling tool was built by extending SEWOSA (System Engineering Workbench for Open System Architecture) and utilising the CIMBIOSYS (CINI-Building Integrated Open SYStems) integrating infrastructure. The main contributions of the research are that: a framework for resource modelling has been established; means and mechanisms have been proposed, implemented and tested which link and coordinate different modelling perspectives into an unified enterprise model; the mechanisms and resource models generated by this research support each Pfe phase of systems engineering projects and demonstrate benefits by increasing the degree to which the derivation process among models is automated

    Building Social Capital With It And Collaboration In Supply Chains: An Empirical Investigation

    The importance of managing the extended enterprise is a recurrent theme, and many consider supply chains to be the next frontier of opportunities to improve profitability and competitive advantage for organizations. Building on prior work that has identified the value creation capabilities of integrated digital platforms and relational conditions, the paper draws upon social capital theory to develop an organizing framework for developing supply chain integration capabilities. We assert that both IT and relational capabilities constitute the social capital available to firms in the supply network and draw upon Nahapiet and Ghosal’s (1998) work to identify the specific facets structural, relational and cognitive social capital that are relevant in the context of supply chain integration. This framework enables us to evaluate structural relational and cognitive social capital as a platform for managing collective action and as a source of creating and sharing knowledge. A research model is developed and empirically validated that investigates the impact of different facets of social capital on supply chain integration, and subsequently supply chain integration on firm performance. Data from 110 manufacturing and retail firms was used to test the model to provide empirical support for the proposed research model

One of the main characteristics of such a framework is to support the information integration and data exchange between facilities using the base maps to solve the problem of water distributing networks. Entities in the Khartoum State (KS) infrastructure linked into information sources and leaded to integrate and exchange of associated information. The Methodology used is to study the existing urban systems specially water network using Geodatabase concept which are analyzed by observing and comparing the related earlier work using different criteria. Geodatabase of the system was defined , designed and build ArcGIS  software, an object oriented geodatabase was created using GIS Software. The information was gathered from Water, Sewage, Transportation Corporations in Khartoum States. The tools and software used are the Style Studio 2009 XML. Enterprise Suite Editor for driving KS Infrastructure geodatabase and KS Digital Base map was obtained from Khartoum State Surveying Corporation for Khartoum city center. Visual Basic for Application (VBA) was used to develop the Search Engine program. The main result obtained by the research is the development of a framework based on Geodatabase concept for the integration of geographic information of Khartoum State infrastructure network facilities. The geodatabase of Khartoum State base map and facilities networks were completed by creating Multitask object oriented geodatabase using ArCatalog. A search engine code was written and tested successfully. The integration of information was available to exchange information between different Corporations to solve any problem that may damage the network facilities and to help in managing and adding any new services on the site.     Mini-SOA/ESB Design Guidelines and Simulation for Wireless Sensor Networks

    One of the major challenges in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is the difficulty of efficient integration with other WSN application domains. This is because there is no open standard framework to support heterogeneous types of sensors that are produced by many sensor manufacturers. In order to integrate different domain services, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) /Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) has been widely used as an open standard for providing location transparency and segregation. In this thesis, we propose mini-SOA/ESB Architecture to integration of wireless sensor networks. However, previous work on SOA/ESB has focused on large scale Enterprise service level integration, and is not adaptable to the WSN domains because of limited hardware and software capabilities. Sharing sensor data requires an open standard prototype to support various kinds of sensor applications composed of heterogeneous sensor nodes. This standard prototype can be applied to any application, such as OS-based architecture, VM-based architecture, Middleware architecture, and Stand-alone protocols. To address the issue, this thesis presents design considerations and a new model, which we call mini-SOA/ESB for WSNs, as an open standard.     Construction informatics in Turkey: strategic role of ICT and future research directions

    Construction Informatics deals with subjects ranging from strategic management of ICTs to interoperability and information integration in the construction industry. Studies on defining research directions for Construction Informatics have a history over 20 years. The recent studies in the area highlight the priority themes for Construction Informatics research as interoperability, collaboration support, intelligent sites and knowledge sharing. In parallel, today it is widely accepted in the Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry that ICT is becoming a strategic asset for any organisation to deliver business improvement and achieve sustainable competitive advantage. However, traditionally the AEC industry has approached investing in ICT with a lack of strategic focus and low level of priority to the business. This paper presents a recent study from Turkey that is focused on two themes. The first theme investigates the strategic role of ICT implementations from an industrial perspective, and explores if organisations within the AEC industry view ICT as a strategic resource for their business practice. The second theme investigates the ‘perspective of academia’ in terms of future research directions of Construction Informatics. The results of the industrial study indicates that ICT is seen as a value-adding resource, but a shift towards the recognition of the importance of ICT in terms of value adding in winning work and achieving strategic competitive advantage is observed. On the other hand, ICT Training is found to be the theme of highest priority from the academia point of view

    Towards the development of the framework for inter sensing enterprise architecture

    [EN] Inter-enterprise architecture (IEA) is a new concept that seeks to apply the tools and methodologies of enterprise architecture (EA) in a collaborative context, in order to model collaborative organizations in an inclusive manner. According to the main enterprise architectures proposed to this point, an EA should be conformed at least for a framework, a methodology and a modelling language. Sensing enterprise (SE) is an attribute of an enterprise or a network that allows it to react to business stimuli originating on the Internet. These fields have come into focus recently, and there is not evidence of the use of IEA for modelling a SE, while finding an interesting gap to work on. Thus, this paper proposes an initial framework for inter sensing enterprise architecture (FISEA), which seeks to classify, organize, store and communicate, at the conceptual level, all the elements for inter-sensing enterprise architectures and their relationships, ensuring their consistency and integrity.
