Located at 1219 Main Street in Buffalo, New York, Artspace Buffalo provides affordable housing and work space for artists and their families, and commercial space for arts organizations and arts-related businesses. Even though the project is relatively new, American Style Magazine, in its April 2008 issue, named Buffalo the top Arts Destination for Mid-Sized Cities. Among the attractions and facilities that the magazine noted was Artspace Buffalo, which it said added to the city\u27s flavor. Since Artspace Buffalo is a fairly recent project, it may be too early to quantify the economic development benefits that it has created

[Excerpt] Buffalo Child Care Means Business presents the economic and business case for making Buffalo\u27s children the focus of economic development. The 2006 survey of 117 businesses located in downtown Buffalo, New York, documents the business sector\u27s present and projected reliance upon high quality child care services as a necessary component to optimum workplace recruitment, productivity and stability. This promising study highlights research specific to the Buffalo region measuring the cost the community bears as a result of low quality child care and early education. It draws upon nationally recognized economic development strategies to offer recommendations for a strategic child care plan integral to the City of Buffalo\u27s overall strategic initiatives to strengthen downtown\u27s attractiveness to successful enterprises. The early development needs of Buffalo\u27s children must be front and center if the potential economic power of broadly successful education is to be realized. With business, government, education and child care leaders at the table, Buffalo\u27s economic renaissance can be built on individual and social foundations that last a lifetime

    Buffalo\u27s In Rem Foreclosure Auction

    Get PDF
The increase in tax foreclosure and property abandonment over the past five years has created an abundance of vacant properties in the City of Buffalo. In fact, Buffalo has the third highest vacancy problem in the nation, with between 12,000 to 18,000 vacant buildings. Buffalo trails only Detroit and New Orleans among the 100 largest cities. Although the subprime mortgage crisis did not hit Buffalo as hard as many other cities, tax foreclosures have risen over the past five years. As a result, the City’s In Rem housing foreclosure auction has grown significantly. In October 2009, Buffalo held its largest foreclosure auction in city history

Performance-Based Assessment for English Language Learners

    Get PDF
This policy brief was drafted by Bridget Murphy, a 2017 graduate of the University at Buffalo School of Law. It examines education for English language learners in Buffalo. After setting out the language diversity in Buffalo Public Schools and the challenges for English language learners, the brief explores the benefits of performance-based assessment. Rather than insist on memorization, this approach uses critical-thinking, research skills, and problem-solving to help students break through the language barrier. In fact, in performance-based high schools, the graduation rate for English language learners is nearly 20% higher than in schools that use standardized testing. The brief argues that Buffalo Public School leaders should advocate for broader use of performance-based assessment in New York State education standards. This publication builds on Partnership for the Public Good’s work to improve language access in the Buffalo-Niagara region, including calling for a Limited English Proficiency plan in the Buffalo Public Schools, created and implemented in partnership with the community

    Bangladeshi Immigrants in Buffalo

    Get PDF
Bangladeshi immigrants have relocated to Buffalo, New York, at a pace that has surprised many. The size of Buffalo’s Bangladeshi population is unknown. The U.S. Census estimates that 316 Bangladeshis live in Buffalo, but Liberty Yellow Taxi alone employs about 367. Most Bangladeshi praise Buffalo, but some worry that social and religious intolerance is growing. A number of men in the mosque have expressed concern about anti-Muslim rhetoric on local talk shows. Like members of the Bangladeshi Society of Buffalo, they hope to raise awareness about diverse religious and ethnic groups and spread a message of tolerance
