    Establishing a Multi-Thesauri-Scenario based on SKOS and Cross-Concordances

    This case study proposes a scenario with three topic-related thesauri, which have been connected with bilateral cross-concordances as part of a major terminology mapping initiative in the project KoMoHe (Mayr & Petras, 2008).     Linking Data Across Universities: An Integrated Video Lectures Dataset

    This paper presents our work and experience interlinking educational information across universities through the use of Linked Data principles and technologies. More specifically this paper is focused on selecting, extracting, structuring and interlinking information of video lectures produced by 27 different educational institutions. For this purpose, selected information from several websites and YouTube channels have been scraped and structured according to well-known vocabularies, like FOAF 1, or the W3C Ontology for Media Resources 2. To integrate this information, the extracted videos have been categorized under a common classification space, the taxonomy defined by the Open Directory Project 3. An evaluation of this categorization process has been conducted obtaining a 98% degree of coverage and 89% degree of correctness. As a result of this process a new Linked Data dataset has been released containing more than 14,000 video lectures from 27 different institutions and categorized under a common classification scheme

    LIME: Towards a Metadata Module for Ontolex

    The OntoLex W3C Community Group has been working for more than a year on realizing a proposal for a standard ontol-ogy lexicon model. As the core-specification of the model is almost com-plete, the group started development of additional modules for specific tasks and use cases. We think that in many usage scenarios (e.g. linguistic enrichment, lo-calization and alignment of ontologies) the discovery and exploitation of linguis-tically grounded datasets may benefit from summarizing information about their linguistic expressivity. While the VoID vocabulary covers the need for general metadata about linked datasets, this more specific information demands a dedicated extension. In this paper, we fill this gap by introducing LIME (Linguistic Metadata), a new vocabulary aiming at completing the OntoLex standard with specifications for linguistic metadata.

    Im August 2009 wurde SKOS „Simple Knowledge Organization System“ als neuer Standard für web-basierte kontrollierte Vokabulare durch das W3C veröffentlicht. SKOS dient als Datenmodell, um kontrollierte Vokabulare über das Web anzubieten sowie technisch und semantisch interoperabel zu machen. Perspektivisch kann die heterogene Landschaft der Erschließungsvokabulare über SKOS vereinheitlicht und vor allem die Inhalte der klassischen Datenbanken (Bereich Fachinformation) für Anwendungen des Semantic Web, beispielsweise als Linked Open Data (LOD), zugänglich und stär-ker miteinander vernetzt werden. Vokabulare im SKOS-Format können dabei eine relevante Funktion einnehmen, indem sie als standardisiertes Brückenvokabular dienen und semantische Verlinkung zwischen erschlossenen, veröffentlichten Daten herstellen. Die folgende Fallstudie skizziert ein Szenario mit drei thematisch verwandten Thesauri, die ins SKOS-Format übertragen und inhaltlich über Crosskonkordanzen aus dem Projekt KoMoHe verbunden werden. Die Mapping Properties von SKOS bieten dazu standardisierte Relationen, die denen der Crosskonkordanzen entsprechen.     Semantic Web technologies and specifications are increasingly finding applications within digital libraries and other e-resource contexts. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an introduction to some essential Semantic Web concepts and the resource description framework (RDF), a key enabling language of the Semantic Web. Applications of RDF including Dublin Core, FOAF, SKOS and RDFa will be explored with practical examples, and recent implementations of these specifications within a variety of e-resource discovery contexts will be discussed

    Toward linked data: The Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus

    The Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary that will be used to describe music resources and is developed by the Music Library Association in conjunction with the Library of Congress. The objective of this study is to report on the current status of the LCMPT and to outline future steps which will allow the thesaurus to operate in a linked data environment. Four research questions examined the Simple Knowledge Organization System and its use with the LCMPT: the ways in which controlled vocabularies can be transformed into the Simple Knowledge Organization System format, the technologies and methods currently in use for this process, the effectiveness of these technologies and methods, and how the LCMPT can be most effectively converted into the Simple Knowledge Organization System format. Using existing documents, this qualitative study examined official World Wide Web Consortium documentation, the Open Metadata Registry, and was informed by work on the LCMPT performed at the Library of Congress. Tasks completed during an internship at the Library of Congress included discussion and planning for further LCMPT development and progress, development of the LCMPT Authority Data Elements, consideration of existing technologies and how they might be used in the development and deployment of LCMPT, conversion of existing LCMPT documentation into a more accessible format, research and documentation of the hierarchy of LCMPT, deployment of the LCMPT to a vocabulary space and element set space in the Open Metadata Registry, and consideration for future development of the LCMPT. The results of this study help to determine whether applying Semantic Web tools such as the Simple Knowledge Organization System to the LCMPT will allow music catalogers and other users of controlled vocabularies to begin harnessing the many potential benefits of the Semantic Web.Master of Science in Information Scienc

    Normdatenpflege in Zeiten der Automatisierung: Erstellung und Evaluation automatisch aufgebauter Thesaurus-Crosskonkordanzen

    Thesaurus-Crosskonkordanzen bilden eine wichtige Voraussetzung für die integrierte Suche in einer verteilten Datenstruktur. Ihr Aufbau erfordert allerdings erhebliche personelle Ressourcen. Der vorliegende Beitrag liefert Evaluationsergebnisse des Library Track 2012 der Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI), in dem Crosskonkordanzen zwischen dem Thesaurus Sozialwissenschaften (TheSoz) und dem Standard Thesaurus Wirtschaft (STW) erstmals automatisch erstellt wurden. Die Evaluation weist auf deutliche Unterschiede in den getesteten Matching-Tools hin und stellt die qualitativen Unterschiede einer automatisch im Vergleich zu einer intellektuell erstellten Crosskonkordanz heraus. Die Ergebnisse sprechen für einen Einsatz automatisch generierter Thesaurus-Crosskonkordanzen, um Domänenexperten eine maschinell erzeugte Vorselektion von möglichen Äquivalenzrelationen anzubieten.     «Wikipedia loves libraries»: in Italia è un amore corrisposto...

    Nell'ambito del Progetto GLAM, la comunità di Wikipedia ha sviluppato la campagna Wikipedia Loves Libraries con l'obiettivo di mettere in comunicazione l'enciclopedia – ricca di milioni di risorse informative – con il mondo delle biblioteche, degli archivi e dell'open access. Sulla scia di quanto sta avvenendo in altri Paesi, anche in Italia si stanno diffondendo iniziative che hanno coinvolto le biblioteche e i loro utenti. Le prime attività sono iniziate circa due anni fa grazie ad alcuni bibliotecari ed appassionati di Wikimedia Italia. In un lasso di tempo brevissimo sono stati realizzati eventi e organizzati seminari, conferenze e corsi di formazione; sono state siglate convenzioni ed elaborati progetti che hanno coinvolto anche l'ambito della catalogazione e del controllo d'autorità. L''ICCU ha avviato un lavoro per valorizzare la fruizione dei record di autorità prodotti nell'ambito di SBN, intensificando la partecipazione italiana al VIAF (Virtual International Authority File) e il collegamento alle voci di Wikipedia. La Biblioteca nazionale centrale di Firenze ha attivato link fra i termini del Thesaurus del Nuovo soggettario e i corrispettivi lemmi di Wikipedia, e a partire dal maggio 2013 Wikimedia Italia ha favorito l'implementazione dei link reciproci (interlinking). In questo modo è stato realizzato il primo prototipo di interoperabilità fra Wikipedia e uno strumento di indicizzazione per soggetto multidisciplinare prodotto nel mondo delle biblioteche. La BNCF sta lavorando anche per sperimentare l'uso di Wikidata per potenziare i collegamenti con i soggetti in inglese della Library of Congress, e per estendere la collaborazione al progetto Wikisource. Tutto insomma fa pensare che le biblioteche italiane possano iniziare ad acquisire lo stesso spirito aperto, creativo e collaborativo che, tramite il web, sta alimentando Wikipedia
