Cooperation between Top-Down and Bottom-Up Theorem Provers
Top-down and bottom-up theorem proving approaches each have specific
advantages and disadvantages. Bottom-up provers profit from strong redundancy
control but suffer from the lack of goal-orientation, whereas top-down provers
are goal-oriented but often have weak calculi when their proof lengths are
considered. In order to integrate both approaches, we try to achieve
cooperation between a top-down and a bottom-up prover in two different ways:
The first technique aims at supporting a bottom-up with a top-down prover. A
top-down prover generates subgoal clauses, they are then processed by a
bottom-up prover. The second technique deals with the use of bottom-up
generated lemmas in a top-down prover. We apply our concept to the areas of
model elimination and superposition. We discuss the ability of our techniques
to shorten proofs as well as to reorder the search space in an appropriate
manner. Furthermore, in order to identify subgoal clauses and lemmas which are
actually relevant for the proof task, we develop methods for a relevancy-based
filtering. Experiments with the provers SETHEO and SPASS performed in the
problem library TPTP reveal the high potential of our cooperation approaches
The organization of anticorruption: Getting incentives right!
Governments and private firms try to contain corruption among their staff mostly in a top-down, rules-based approach. They limit discretion, increase monitoring or impose harsher penalties. Principles-based, bottom-up approaches to anticorruption, instead, emphasize the importance of value systems and employee's intrinsic motivation. This embraces the invigorating of social control systems, encouraging whistle-blowing, coding of good practice and alerting to red flags. This paper investigates how some top-down measures run counter to bottom-up contributions. Examples range from penalties imposed with zero-tolerance, debarment or the nullity of contracts. Long-term change in benthopelagic fish abundance in the abyssal northeast Pacific Ocean
Food web structure, particularly the relative importance of bottom-up and top-down control of animal abundances, is poorly known for the Earth's largest habitats: the abyssal plains. A unique 15-yr time series of climate, productivity, particulate flux, and abundance of primary consumers (primarily echinoderms) and secondary consumers (fish) was examined to elucidate the response of trophic levels to temporal variation in one another. Towed camera sled deployments in the abyssal northeast Pacific (4100 m water depth) showed that annual mean numbers of the dominant fish genus (Coryphaenoides spp.) more than doubled over the period 1989-2004. Coryphaenoides spp. abundance was significantly correlated with total abundance of mobile epibenthic megafauna (echinoderms), with changes in fish abundance lagging behind changes in the echinoderms. Direct correlations between surface climate and fish abundances, and particulate organic carbon (POC) flux and fish abundances, were insignificant, which may be related to the varied response of the potential prey taxa to climate and POC flux. This Study provides a fare opportunity to study the long-term dynamics of an unexploited marine fish population and Suggests a dominant role for bottom-up control in this system
How can bottom-up information shape learning of top-down attention-control skills?
How does bottom-up information affect the development of top-down attentional control skills during the learning of visuomotor tasks? Why is the eye fovea so small? Strong evidence supports the idea that in humans foveation is mainly guided by task-specific skills, but how these are learned is still an important open problem. We designed and implemented a simulated neural eye-arm coordination model to study the development of attention control in a search-and-reach task involving simple coloured stimuli. The model is endowed with a hard-wired bottom-up attention saliency map and a top-down attention component which acquires task-specific knowledge on potential gaze targets and their spatial relations. This architecture achieves high performance very fast. To explain this result, we argue that: (a) the interaction between bottom-up and top-down mechanisms supports the development of task-specific attention control skills by allowing an efficient exploration of potentially useful gaze targets; (b) bottom-up mechanisms boast the exploitation of the initial limited task-specific knowledge by actively selecting areas where it can be suitably applied; (c) bottom-up processes shape objects representation, their value, and their roles (these can change during learning, e.g. distractors can become useful attentional cues); (d) increasing the size of the fovea alleviates perceptual aliasing, but at the same time increases input processing costs and the number of trials required to learn. Overall, the results indicate that bottom-up attention mechanisms can play a relevant role in attention control, especially during the acquisition of new task-specific skills, but also during task performance
A "Social Bitcoin" could sustain a democratic digital world
A multidimensional financial system could provide benefits for individuals,
companies, and states. Instead of top-down control, which is destined to
eventually fail in a hyperconnected world, a bottom-up creation of value can
unleash creative potential and drive innovations. Multiple currency dimensions
can represent different externalities and thus enable the design of incentives
and feedback mechanisms that foster the ability of complex dynamical systems to
self-organize and lead to a more resilient society and sustainable economy.
Modern information and communication technologies play a crucial role in this
process, as Web 2.0 and online social networks promote cooperation and
collaboration on unprecedented scales. Within this contribution, we discuss how
one dimension of a multidimensional currency system could represent
socio-digital capital (Social Bitcoins) that can be generated in a bottom-up
way by individuals who perform search and navigation tasks in a future version
of the digital world. The incentive to mine Social Bitcoins could sustain
digital diversity, which mitigates the risk of totalitarian control by powerful
monopolies of information and can create new business opportunities needed in
times where a large fraction of current jobs is estimated to disappear due to

Voluntary task switching under load: contribution of top-down and bottom-up factors in goal-directed behavior
The present study investigated the relative contribution of bottom-up and top-down control to task selection in the voluntary task-switching (VTS) procedure. In order to manipulate the efficiency of top-down control, a concurrent working memory load was imposed during VTS. In three experiments, bottom-up factors, such as stimulus repetitions, repetition of irrelevant information, and stimulus task associations, were introduced in order to investigate their influence on task selection. We observed that the tendency to repeat tasks was stronger under load, suggesting that top-down control counteracts the automatic tendency to repeat tasks. The results also indicated that task selection can be guided by several elements in the environment, but that only the influence of stimulus repetitions depends on the efficiency of top-down control. The theoretical implications of these findings are discussed within the interplay between top-down and bottom-up control that underlies the voluntary selection of tasks
