Multi-agent evolutionary systems for the generation of complex virtual worlds
Modern films, games and virtual reality applications are dependent on
convincing computer graphics. Highly complex models are a requirement for the
successful delivery of many scenes and environments. While workflows such as
rendering, compositing and animation have been streamlined to accommodate
increasing demands, modelling complex models is still a laborious task. This
paper introduces the computational benefits of an Interactive Genetic Algorithm
(IGA) to computer graphics modelling while compensating the effects of user
fatigue, a common issue with Interactive Evolutionary Computation. An
intelligent agent is used in conjunction with an IGA that offers the potential
to reduce the effects of user fatigue by learning from the choices made by the
human designer and directing the search accordingly. This workflow accelerates
the layout and distribution of basic elements to form complex models. It
captures the designer's intent through interaction, and encourages playful
discovery
Optimal Placement of Valves in a Water Distribution Network with CLP(FD)
This paper presents a new application of logic programming to a real-life
problem in hydraulic engineering. The work is developed as a collaboration of
computer scientists and hydraulic engineers, and applies Constraint Logic
Programming to solve a hard combinatorial problem. This application deals with
one aspect of the design of a water distribution network, i.e., the valve
isolation system design.
We take the formulation of the problem by Giustolisi and Savic (2008) and
show how, thanks to constraint propagation, we can get better solutions than
the best solution known in the literature for the Apulian distribution network.
We believe that the area of the so-called hydroinformatics can benefit from
the techniques developed in Constraint Logic Programming and possibly from
other areas of logic programming, such as Answer Set Programming.Comment: Best paper award at the 27th International Conference on Logic

Quantum adiabatic machine learning
We develop an approach to machine learning and anomaly detection via quantum
adiabatic evolution. In the training phase we identify an optimal set of weak
classifiers, to form a single strong classifier. In the testing phase we
adiabatically evolve one or more strong classifiers on a superposition of
inputs in order to find certain anomalous elements in the classification space.
Both the training and testing phases are executed via quantum adiabatic
evolution. We apply and illustrate this approach in detail to the problem of
