Robust Rotation Synchronization via Low-rank and Sparse Matrix Decomposition
This paper deals with the rotation synchronization problem, which arises in
global registration of 3D point-sets and in structure from motion. The problem
is formulated in an unprecedented way as a "low-rank and sparse" matrix
decomposition that handles both outliers and missing data. A minimization
strategy, dubbed R-GoDec, is also proposed and evaluated experimentally against
state-of-the-art algorithms on simulated and real data. The results show that

Penalized Orthogonal Iteration for Sparse Estimation of Generalized Eigenvalue Problem
We propose a new algorithm for sparse estimation of eigenvectors in
generalized eigenvalue problems (GEP). The GEP arises in a number of modern
data-analytic situations and statistical methods, including principal component
analysis (PCA), multiclass linear discriminant analysis (LDA), canonical
correlation analysis (CCA), sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) and invariant
co-ordinate selection. We propose to modify the standard generalized orthogonal
iteration with a sparsity-inducing penalty for the eigenvectors. To achieve
this goal, we generalize the equation-solving step of orthogonal iteration to a
penalized convex optimization problem. The resulting algorithm, called
penalized orthogonal iteration, provides accurate estimation of the true
eigenspace, when it is sparse. Also proposed is a computationally more
efficient alternative, which works well for PCA and LDA problems. Numerical
studies reveal that the proposed algorithms are competitive, and that our
tuning procedure works well. We demonstrate applications of the proposed
algorithm to obtain sparse estimates for PCA, multiclass LDA, CCA and SDR.

Video Compressive Sensing for Dynamic MRI
We present a video compressive sensing framework, termed kt-CSLDS, to
accelerate the image acquisition process of dynamic magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI). We are inspired by a state-of-the-art model for video compressive
sensing that utilizes a linear dynamical system (LDS) to model the motion
manifold. Given compressive measurements, the state sequence of an LDS can be
first estimated using system identification techniques. We then reconstruct the
observation matrix using a joint structured sparsity assumption. In particular,
we minimize an objective function with a mixture of wavelet sparsity and joint
sparsity within the observation matrix. We derive an efficient convex
optimization algorithm through alternating direction method of multipliers
(ADMM), and provide a theoretical guarantee for global convergence. We
demonstrate the performance of our approach for video compressive sensing, in
terms of reconstruction accuracy. We also investigate the impact of various
sampling strategies. We apply this framework to accelerate the acquisition
process of dynamic MRI and show it achieves the best reconstruction accuracy
with the least computational time compared with existing algorithms in the
