Bits from Biology for Computational Intelligence
Computational intelligence is broadly defined as biologically-inspired
computing. Usually, inspiration is drawn from neural systems. This article
shows how to analyze neural systems using information theory to obtain
constraints that help identify the algorithms run by such systems and the
information they represent. Algorithms and representations identified
information-theoretically may then guide the design of biologically inspired
computing systems (BICS). The material covered includes the necessary
introduction to information theory and the estimation of information theoretic
quantities from neural data. We then show how to analyze the information
encoded in a system about its environment, and also discuss recent
methodological developments on the question of how much information each agent
carries about the environment either uniquely, or redundantly or
synergistically together with others. Last, we introduce the framework of local
information dynamics, where information processing is decomposed into component
processes of information storage, transfer, and modification -- locally in
space and time. We close by discussing example applications of these measures
to neural data and other complex systems
Increasing Evolvability Considered as a Large-Scale Trend in Evolution
Evolvability is the capacity to evolve. This paper introduces a simple computational model of evolvability and demonstrates that, under certain conditions, evolvability can increase indefinitely, even when there is no direct selection for evolvability. The model shows that increasing evolvability implies an accelerating evolutionary pace. It is suggested that the conditions for indefinitely increasing evolvability are satisfied in biological and cultural evolution. We claim that increasing evolvability is a large-scale trend in evolution. This hypothesis leads to testable predictions about biological and cultural evolution
Energetics of the brain and AI
Does the energy requirements for the human brain give energy constraints that
give reason to doubt the feasibility of artificial intelligence? This report
will review some relevant estimates of brain bioenergetics and analyze some of
the methods of estimating brain emulation energy requirements. Turning to AI,
there are reasons to believe the energy requirements for de novo AI to have
little correlation with brain (emulation) energy requirements since cost could
depend merely of the cost of processing higher-level representations rather
than billions of neural firings. Unless one thinks the human way of thinking is
the most optimal or most easily implementable way of achieving software
intelligence, we should expect de novo AI to make use of different, potentially
very compressed and fast, processes
Binary Particle Swarm Optimization based Biclustering of Web usage Data
Web mining is the nontrivial process to discover valid, novel, potentially
useful knowledge from web data using the data mining techniques or methods. It
may give information that is useful for improving the services offered by web
portals and information access and retrieval tools. With the rapid development
of biclustering, more researchers have applied the biclustering technique to
different fields in recent years. When biclustering approach is applied to the
web usage data it automatically captures the hidden browsing patterns from it
in the form of biclusters. In this work, swarm intelligent technique is
combined with biclustering approach to propose an algorithm called Binary
Particle Swarm Optimization (BPSO) based Biclustering for Web Usage Data. The
main objective of this algorithm is to retrieve the global optimal bicluster
from the web usage data. These biclusters contain relationships between web
users and web pages which are useful for the E-Commerce applications like web
advertising and marketing. Experiments are conducted on real dataset to prove
the efficiency of the proposed algorithms
Expressivity in Natural and Artificial Systems
Roboticists are trying to replicate animal behavior in artificial systems.
Yet, quantitative bounds on capacity of a moving platform (natural or
artificial) to express information in the environment are not known. This paper
presents a measure for the capacity of motion complexity -- the expressivity --
of articulated platforms (both natural and artificial) and shows that this
measure is stagnant and unexpectedly limited in extant robotic systems. This
analysis indicates trends in increasing capacity in both internal and external
complexity for natural systems while artificial, robotic systems have increased
significantly in the capacity of computational (internal) states but remained
more or less constant in mechanical (external) state capacity. This work
presents a way to analyze trends in animal behavior and shows that robots are
not capable of the same multi-faceted behavior in rich, dynamic environments as
